Since the new podcast by Sixen and Force, I've been sick with a mild case of BGM nostalgia. And I realized, one of the most enjoyable parts of Diablo II were the tracks. I don't think anything from Diablo III has stood out to me much; in fact, I can't even recall if the released footage so far even has BGM. I know some of the trailers did, but still, nothing has stood out to me.
So, I wanted to talk BGM with you guys; do you guys want the same theme and sounds, just the theme, or maybe a completely new style/theme for D3? Poll up top.
I don't think it would be nearly as interesting if the game had many similarities to the last 2
Of course the game is going to be in the same place, with the same barb class, and some similar enemies
But otherwise I hope to see some new and creative differences
BGM is background music. I don't remember much about D2's music, i might have muted it although im not sure.. But the D1 bgm is definitely one of the all-time best video-game music..
One thing i hope for is that they have an orchestra ready for at least some of their tracks.. I mean, orchestras just make everything so epic and memorable.
Also, i remember Jay W saying something about the possibility of a full out angel vs demons battle (think lotr) in some part of the game (which i think would be pretty damn sweet).. And this comes to mind as bgm for that specific area:
I dunno, I really like the new dark, industrial feel of the current D3 BGM. Like, listen to the new Tristram theme (if you can call it that, it's just gonna be repeated), it has all these different sounds, an underlying bass note that wavers, I just like the way it feels; it fits the personality of New Tristram perfectly, in my opinion.
I think the BGM will be outfitted to fit the environments they're made for. I think that's all that really matters. Would you want to hear raggae music at a death metal show?

Ah, the music of Diablo. The first game had awesome music. Really scary and moody, with the occasional screaming and moaning if I remember correctly. The caves especially had a very scary soundtrack, yet still urged you to delve further down. D2 toned down the scariness factor in my opinion, but didn't tone down the dark feel. A lot of music is still very dramatic: just listen to how sad monastary is. I really liked the music from Act 2 a lot, but perhaps because it was one of the few upbeat ones. I'm talking about the track desert. During LoD Matt Uelmen introduced epicness in the soundtrack. I'm sure you all remember the song played in Harrogath.
I went digging in the news archive and found this gem of an article written by Zhar. It shows that music will be of the more epic scale, yet still have a very distinct sound which hopefully will make it Diablo. Now personally I don't think I want the entire soundtrack to consist of sweeping melodies, since that would become quite tedious. Making you feel awesome is great, but there is something that's called overkill.
Now I trust the guys know what they're doing and I want them to do their own thing. It's a new game, so there should be a new and distinct soundtrack. It would be awesome if they made a 'desert' like song (or simply a tune that prominently features a djembe), but they would have to make it fit in with the game.
The music samples on the Diablo III official site are fantastic... If you add screaming, demons howling, and babies crying in the background. Hopefully those make it into the final mix.

Ah yes; cannot forget Harrogath. I'm not very descriptive with music, but I can say that I really like Harrogath's mood. It's a little dark, a little hopeful, and a bit epic. I'd love for few tracks to have similar feels as this track. Perhaps some of the more open feeling lands that feel more like exploration than it does dangerous and demon slaying.
Great article! Thanks for finding and sharing it; after reading it, I think I'll go back and more carefully listen to some of the D3 samples. If the quality of Blizzard music is still progressing upwards, D3 will definitely have an awesome soundtrack.
Yeah, I'd love for a desert soundtrack. One that isn't too, too dark, when compared to the other ones. To be put simply, I'd want for a good array of different feeling BGM's and not just everything to be dark and dingy.
Some BGM in Diablo 2 is truely epic, like the "wilderness" by Matt Uelmen, he is a talented composer.
The creepy theme makes me thrill, you don't need too many elements, sometimes only a Guitar will do.
I really actually disliked all of Act 5's tracks. It was too orchestrated and really didn't have the evil feeling to it. There were points in some of the tracks that sounded like something bad was happening, but it didn't really demonstrate "evil".
Act 4 had great music.
Act 3's music was jungle-ish, but the best tracks were in the dungeons (spider cavern, sewers)
Act 2 was brilliant. Although it wasn't all that evil, it really set the mood.
Act 1 had the best tracks of the game - but maybe that's just nostalgia taking over.

I dont wanna hear justin bieber when playing d3
In all seriousness, music plays a big role for RPG games. Especially when setting a tone of the and the mood of the environment.
When i'm in act 2, desert, i better feel like i need a droplet of water or something.
Or about to die of sunburn u no ?
