That's pretty interesting. What I am wondering is: will the multiplayer experience run on Battle.net? Afterall, companies like EA run their multiplayer games off of their own networks in one manner or other. How integrated will this be? Will we be able to cross play PSN/Xbox Live with desktop based platforms? If you make a character on one platform, will we be able to also play it on the other?
I forget which Blizz rep said it(maybe Bashiok?), but they stated a while back when the whole Console thing was brought up that if they did decide to make a console version that it would not interfere with the release of the PC version.
It definitely won't, its going to be 2 different teams. Diablo III has been developed for PC for years. They will try to port it for consoles based on the PC version so that shouldn't be an issue for us.
As for the network it's going to play? I think it's going to be either for Xbox Live/PSN or nothing. Consoles can get up to 4 controllers, they can play coop and 2v2 at home

There is no way this won't affect the gameplay of the PC version, they will have to make some adjustments, not too big, but they will have to for it to work on console.
I seriously doubt the pc version will be effected at all. If anything, the console version will be manipulated for the smooth transfer. There would be no reason to mess with the pc version.

I thought this was old news? The staff positions have been posted on their official jobs site for months.
We ran a piece on this a couple months back, see here, back in November.
And I doubt the console version will come out anytime soon, with even no lead for the team yet. And no, I don't think it will affect the PC version. Feel free to think differently.
This is old news though... These were already on the job pages and Blizzard explicitly stated it was just a test they aren't necessarily making it, If it doesn't turn out the way they want it to ,they said they'd scrap it. It will also in no way delay the PC version as they are separate So once the PC is ready to be shipped then it will be shipped, whether the consoles are finished or not.

Producing the console version will probably be very similar to when Capcom ported Street Fighter IV to PC. In that case, Capcom released the console version first, and only then did they begin work on the PC version which released months later.

I expect Diablo 3 will be similar.
I respectfully disagree. Blizzard just started getting a console team, so they'll base everything on the PC version. Capcom was always focused more on consoles, i see no similarity between them and Blizzard.
Can can't imagine playing D3 on anything other than a mouse and keyboard. Yes, I know you can get a mouse for the 360. Don't care. But you know what does suck on the 360? Dragon Age. :pinch:
Diablo has always excelled as a PC game, but I think that, given the fact that consoles today are much better than the consoles of yesterday, Diablo 3 could be a pretty good game on the console.
And I don't think Blizzard is going to let the console team dictate anything over the PC team. It's foolish and they know it. The PC version will be done first with the console version barely trailing behind and, probably, they will be released on the same day. The fundamentals are all there, it's all just integration into the console system that will take a bit of time.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. As Maka explained above, what I meant was that I believe Blizzard will complete their product for its primary platform first. Only after that will they begin serious work on a port to a different platform.
Like how Capcom created SF4 on Console, then ported to PC. Blizzard will finish Diablo 3 for PC, then will port to Console.
Mmm we still have no idea if it is coming to consoles or not. They simply said what they always say, it's a possibility. Them hiring for a D3 team for console can mean as little as nothing at this point. Till they come out and say hey we are making this it is nothing but Blizzard trolling.
Just look at Ghost, they hired for that and it got canned. Just cause Blizzard is hiring for something doesn't mean it's a sure thing.

Didn't mean to confuse
Lol i thought you ment exactly that way, not the opposite as it really is. In that case i completely agree with your point. It wouldn't make sense to me otherwise
I don't know what it is but Diablo on the console just seems wrong. Like getting with an ugly chick when you've had to much to drink. It seemed like a good idea at the time but you'll regret it in the morning.
I feel like their forcing this for the potential $$$ since consoles have such a huge market share right now. What other reason is there? Diablo is perfect for the PC and they set the system requirements so most can play without shelling out big dollars for upgrades. The Diablo crew seems to take pride in their integrity and putting out a high quality product. For me this just seems a step in the opposite direction. Hope they don't screw it up.
If it is a big screw up it won't matter as it's not the real setting for a diablo game anyway. Plus it will probably be released what 2-3 years after D3 comes out. They;'d have to port everything and make sure it wont interfere with the PC release. I don't see it coming till 2013. I am perfectly fine with this.

I just hope they won't wait for the console version to be ready to ship the PC version, 'cause that won't be in 2011.

I wonder if they could pull it off.
