I tried searching for this and couldn't find anything concrete.
I think we are all expecting D3 to have a ton of players, and this time it sounds like there will be A. no USEast/West or even ladders to separate groups of characters and B. that characters will not be deleted after 90+ days of inactivity.
I think both of these changes are great, don't get me wrong. I'm going to love having all of my (at least US) friends available to play with all the time. I'm also going to love not having to log in every 80 days if I'm taking a break to make sure I don't lose my character/gear.
What worries me, though, is the finite amount of legitimate names people can use. Sure.. it's a pretty huuuge list, but I suspect there will be enough players and alts where almost every good name will be used up.. and without any different zones or servers, there's not much we can do to try out names somewhere else. If it's used it's used.
so my question is... Are they going to do character names like they did the SC2 names? Meaning, will two different people be able to make a character name and just have the difference be some kind of ID code? I hope this is the case, because I remember coming into d2 late and most cool names were taken on both servers and I suspect this game will be even more popular.
I know it sounds like a very vain question / idea but I hated running around with prefaces like sorc or any subset skill group as a part of my name.
I have asked this question before to the Diablo team and have yet to get an answer. I feel partly because they do not know yet. B.net programming for the game is done very late in development and the name issue is something they are probably still discussing. I will continue to ask though so hopefully we get an answer soon.
BTW, if anyone takes my name I will kill you. Not really

I think that it is a good way to handle most of it. I like that there can be multiple players with the same name. What I don't like is having to share the unique code with people to play with them.

Maybe you could add a roman number at the end. For exaple, if two people have the name Dude, the first one keeps the name Dude, the second one gets DudeII.
Well, with D2 it worked because servers were separated and the number of players were much smaller. With D3, the servers will probably be broader (All of the us on one) and there will probably be millions of players with dozens of characters. That would mean approximately 10,000,000 unique names.
The unique code is probably the best way to deal with it with allowing players the choice of their names. I just hope there is an easy way to add people without needing to know their unique code. Although, I guess once they are on your friends list, it won't matter.

Or maybe, just maybe, there will be no unique code. Everyone can have the same name if they want to. But if you wish to add that person to your friends list, you'll have to use some other form of identification that is player created - which would have to be unique.
Which sounds pretty much like the unique code idea.
I think it's going to be a combo between WoW and SCII. Name with unique id for the account and unique character names for the characters on each server.

I guess I'm confused. In d2 the main restrictions were US West / US East, right? I thought those were done away with in d3. So what servers are you guys talking about?
Personally I don't care if I don't get the name I want, I want to be unique. How fun is it to see multiple people every day that are all called "Deckard Cain", "Diablo" or "Barbarian". Some extreme examples, but you get my point. I want one of my characters to be called Ophion, but I certainly don't want it to be called Ophion if 20 people will choose that name as well in the future. I also know a few people that would pick it just to piss me off because of that reason...
I value variety over freedom in this case. I want everyone to be different.
A good compromise would be that after two months of account inactivity (or 1 week of character inactivity below level 10) your characters names are free to pick. If someone chooses the name of one of your characters, then you will be the one forced to pick a new name. The low-level inactivity is meant to prevent people from creating 20 characters when they first start up the game to secure their names for the future, and this safety measure can be removed a month after launch.
But how would you feel if someone else created a character with the name Ophion before you?
No one better take my name Pseudonymity, or Entity other wise there will be hell to pay. I have Pseudonimity on xbox live and I just made it last night, so i'm confident no one will steal my name on D3. I'm pretty sure they will use SCII's method because it runs through B.net and they'll probably just organize it.

Yeah it would suck if some one took my name. But i have a feeling its not going to be a problem, in SCII my name wasn't taken and a four digit user name is pretty hard to get.
I have a list of names ready to spam to my chars the second I get my account set, good luck guys, the race is on!
I plan on buying the game as direct download (If it's faster than midnight release of course). I'll find out what's faster come closer to release. Honestly though I hope it works like SC2, or I'll feel bad having all the good names.. just kidding.. Kinda

When StarCraft II came out, I pre-downloaded it - but you couldn't actually buy it or activate it until 10 AM!
So I traveled to Wal-Mart, bought a copy, and used just the CD-Key to activate the game, and I was on my way!
I hope it's unique names. I'm gonna prepare a list of character names, and I should be able to get at least a few of those I want. Maybe I'll even camp out for it to buy it at Midnight
I'm not sure what's faster, midnight release, or digital download.. As Acid said his wouldn't activate until 10am!! Which is 10 hours for a few dozen thousand people to take every good name to ever be thought of! lol. I'll be spamming all my connections for an answer to the fastest way to get activated. (As in connections I mean repeatedly asking ScyberDragon to spam his connections for an answer lol )

You can bet your sweet ass I'm camping out for my Collectors edition that will be worth every penny. And since i have the Naga epic mouse i'll be bale to play the whole game and all 5 skills with my mouse oh i can see it now, the dark lit room, the ambient glow from my peripherals and Diablo 3 playing on my computer in 1080p ultra detailed glory... *sigh* if only that could be tomorrow night.

Damn.
I thought there were no servers, though?

The best option is to use the unique codes.
