I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed yet...
I just realized that if Leoric is in the game and we are going to be fighting him, I assume we are going to be going into the EXACT same dungeon as we did in the original Diablo. I assume that since the King has been resurrected, so could the greatest monster in the history of Diablo (IMO), the Butcher.
What are the odds that they bring him back and try to use him as a big scare like the original did?
actually it's not exactly like that. Leoric wasn't resurrected just because of the reappearance of evil, but because the Triune Cult put him back together and summoned his spirit (the last piece needed - his crown - you use to get him back to life).
the Butcher would be fun but i dont think it would be as easily explained.

Right but thats not really what he was talking about anyway. His point was that we were going to be entering Tristram and most likely the same dungeons in a sense so there could be a chance we could see The Butcher

I think it'd be funny if the same dungeon we went into back in the original Diablo had the exact same old-school grainy graphics. Basically a copy and paste of the Diablo I dungeon into Diablo III, with original Diablo monsters. I know most people would not appreciate this, but it would be a nice not-so-subtle throwback. It could just be for those 3(?) dungeon levels. Just a chuckle-worthy vision.

I make sure people go to jail. The only thing more fun is Diablo 3.
I don't want to see/fight the actual butcher again but what would be cool is if the random dungeon generator would sometimes give you a room that was the butchers room. It would be a cool easter egg to run into unexpectedly and you would hope for it every time you started a new game.

Just my opinion, but I say leave him alone. Kinda like JAWS, none of the sequels even come close to the original, Id like to keep my original expirence with the Butcher in D1 just the way it is.

just because the Tristram cathedral will be the first dungeon it doesnt mean we're going to have the same content (cathedral to catacombs, then caves, then hell). or the same monsters. they did want to get some of the older bosses back to give us a nice "i fought him before" kind of feeling, but that's about it
It would be interesting to see The Butcher as a simple monster in the dungeon. Not as a boss though. Like he's just there and really easy to kill. And drops something worth while., like a quest starter.
What do they call those lesser but stronger evils? Uniques?
I really don't get what all the hype was about the butcher. I played D1 about a year ago just to fill in the blanks and really... I didn't even budge when I saw him. The only emotion I felt in my encounter with him was "omg gay this guy is gonna kill me".
But I was always good at handling horror movies so I guess it never would've really affected me.
p.s. I had the room in pitch darkness, hoping to give the game a better foothold due to its now-terrible graphics.
Unique monsters are quite harder to kill (the hardest after the Act Bosses) and usually have their own lair (King Leoric and Siegebreaker Assault Beast are both uniques).
I say leave the butcher alone. His prime was in Diablo1 let it stay there. If they brought him back it would most likley be ruined. The butcher was an Epic boss in Diablo1 and should stay that way.

I would prefer that they stay away from bringing back the butcher. There is no way they can make him as terrifying and evil as they did in the first game.
But if they did... I would need an empty Gatorade bottle next to my computer desk, so I have a chance to avoid pissing my pants.
I too wish they bring back the butcher, i don't care what stupid reason they invent to make him return in D3, all i want is for him be in there somewhere somehow. Hell make a secret level just for him.
They would really have to up the ante for The Butcher for him to have that same feel.
Exactly. Bringing back the Butcher risks totally robbing him of all his mystique and horror. I gradually came to accept bringing back King Leoric, but there is no good justification of bringing the Butcher back in D3 other than for nostalgia sake.

Most people here played Diablo 1 when they were still very young. You're much more open to impressions at that age. That's also why Diablo1 is still seen as a very good game today and why many people even still play it, even though it's really annoying for today's standards and it has many shortcomings. It's just nostalgia.
As for the Butcher, I don't see why he should come back. Some references would be nice, but not the actual monster. It's also not the kind of monster (mechanic-wise) we would expect in diablo 3. And it would just be too Griswold II. They've been there...

I just had an idea: A secret level in which the dungeon is filled with nothing but butcher clones. Think cow level in terms of quantity. I also believe Blizz should bring the cow level back and simply add a second secret level with a different, perhaps more humorous, idea.

The Butcher was just a named Overlord with a nice big cleaver and his own special room in Diablo. Found him early in the game, so he was really intimidating. It wasn't just how he looked or his room, or even his "aaah... fresh meat!" line. It was mostly a combination of when we encountered him and how hard he was at that time. I don't think it's easy to immitate in any future game.
