So I've seen alot of people talk about how many skill combos there are and some say hundreds.
Some say thousands and even some say millions. So I'm here to reveal the EXACT number:
Let's say we have an average of 25 skills (will be slightly lower for some) and average of 15 passives. 5 rune effects for each skill re arrangeable 6 different ways without using the same skill/rune combo twice:
25* 5 x 24*5 x 23* 5 x 22*5 x 21*5 x 20*5. Since we have 6 slots. So that equals 1.992375e+12. Then add the passives. 15 passives. 3 at a time.
15 x 14 x 13. So our final product is 5.439184e+15 possible combinations. For those of you who want words. About five QUADRILLION four hundred TRILLION...
So ya. The common sayings from upset people: "there is no customization" "there's nothing making me unique" really sir? I doubt 5.4 quadrillion people are going to play d3 considering there's only 7 billion people on earth lol.
edit: this is also PER character. so basically 5 quadrillion x 5 characters. thats rounding down so roughly 28 quadrillion combinations between all characters. but lets lower that down, because 2 builds in this giant number could be almost virtually identical but off by 1 passive. so lets say there only 1 quadrillion VERY different/viable ways to build all the characters.. still... INSANE lol
Choosing optimal skills and dumpin points into them isnt "customization". I like this system bc it allows for flexability in case a certain skill doesn't pan out as yu thought it would
well there is no customization, cause once I have 6 of each rune I can play all 5.4 quadrillion "builds" with one character
i think your joking. and hope you are. because even if you could switch instantly between them all, you'd never be able to play them all in your life time. if you honestly wanted to test out each build, but only spent 4 minutes testing each one. it would take you aproximately 684.9 million years to do this even with no sleep, non stop. lol. math is fun sometimes
Haha, beat me to it. ALthough you were generous. I assumed even if you need 1 second (which is impossible) to switch a skill/rune set, you'll need 158441 millenia to just swap them all around. Fun life ^^
I could use the same math to calculate the number of possible builds in D2 and I would get a number billions of times larger. It means nothing.
very true, BUT 99% of builds in d2 were completely NON viable and useless. couldn't kill or do anything. so if were talking VIABLE builds that will work. there hundreds of TRILLIONS MORE then d2.
edit: BECAUSE entire skill trees in d2 were useless. and couldn't kill anything in hell. or even nightmare, and MANY builds had to be reliant on uber gear to even be remotely useful. so d3 has infinitely more VIABLE builds then d2. don't kid yourself thinking otherwise
Since the set is non-ordered combinations, you should get (25 choose 6) skills times (15 choose 3) passives = 177,100 x 455 = 80,580,500.
thats not how you times it. use your calculator to do what i showed you and you'll get my number.
You can't just multiply the numbers together. You have to consider the fact that these are combinations. Multiplying them together gives you overlap.
no it doesn't. i edited my last post i sent you with exact numbers. i am making my equation BASED on the fact that you can't use any of the same skill/rune combo's twice. there will be no overlap. and regardless, the number is unfathomably high either way. making it impossible for anyone to say there not unique. the fact that i put 125 THEN 120, because i don't want the same skill/rune to overlap in the equation. otherwise id do 125 x 125 x 125 ect...
One thing though, this is talking about combinations but there will be plenty of builds that will be discarded. As an example (now I obviously don't know this for sure since I haven't played the game) could be the Barbarian wouldn't fill up his six slots ALL with fury generator skills or ALL situational skills.

which is why if you read my entire post at the end i mention that there will be significantly less very different builds, also i mean viable builds. the number is still insanely high

And if he's playing a support Barb to an offensive Barb? He can totally swap at any time but these are the skills he requires right now.
Though I suppose the fury generators build has its flaws...

plus as we said, there will be something keeping you from switching super super easy.

Diablo III has it.
Don't forget the 1-2 more character classes we'll get in the future expansion(s).

If I have skills A, B, C, D, E, and F.... Does your calculation count the skill set up of F, E, D, C, B, and A different from the former?
yes it does. which is why the number is so insanely high. i did the math many times over with help to make sure it was 100% correct.
