I see that item properties are split between them - what is the difference in function? Does it have to do with enchanting?

NA servers - add me if ya want - ysoserious#1178. - i run a clan if anyone wants an invite. no requirements to join - as long as your nice and friendly your more than welcome
hey - i think i was unclear - i meant on the items themselves that drop - they are broken down into categories. why are they broken out though - does it have to do with enchanting the items (i.e. you can only enchant certain stuff)? does it have any purpose other than for making it easier to analyze items?

The idea is that each item can only have so many primary stats and secondary stats. This way, items are less likely to roll nothing but utility bonuses without any core offensive or defensive bonuses.

All items have primary and secondary rolls now. Primary are damage and defense only; whereas, secondary is everything else. This means that a health globe roll/etc is not competing against an average damage/crit/crit damage/etc roll. You cannot have six damage stats any more... and therefore a non damage start is now worthwhile.

But you can still get trifecta+main stat, right?
You only have 4 rolls to get the 4 you need instead of 6. So miles is right... it's less likely.
Also note, you CANNOT roll the above 4 at the same time as vitality and/or AR.
Do we have full lists already of the two categories? I just watched some of the dfans stream and wondered, why single resists ended up as secondary stats while all res became a primary. Why the hell aren't they finally correcting the whole system into single resists having the high(er) values and both being in the same category? Which would be primary, I'd say.
They better don't come up with the plan of splitting primary further into offense and defense (and core lol).
About the trifecta discussion. It might come to a situation in which amazing vanilla items turn out stronger than anything in RoS. That's highly speculative though, because several conditions would have to be met. In D2 they removed the ability to roll both life and mana leech on the same ring/amulet with the expansion. So some of the vanilla dual leechers retained their value. Which only didn't skyrocket because many of the new unique items had plenty of both.
The theory is that items will get a portion of each, so strength won't be competing with move speed, for example.

It may be possible, depending on the item, but a lot less likely.

Quadfecta means no defensive rolls.
