I think you are getting upset a little prematurely. One thing I noticed about the socketting page was that weapons were NOT included among items that could have a socket added. This says one of two things to me:
1) Weapon sockets haven't been added yet and are on the to do list, or the ability to socket weapons doesn't come until a higher jewel crafting level.
2) Weapon sockets wont be added until the first expansion, and with it there will probably be new items with which to fill those sockets. Remember, when Diablo 2 first came out there were only gems. After LOD, jewels and runes were added.
Also, remember that there is the Mystic Artisan that will do item enchantments. We will probably see a lot more variety in modifiers from this particular artisan.
Looking at just the gem selection is STILL (and this is not me getting prematurely upset), a dissapointment. Ruby Helm increased level gain? Really, buy the time your expected to find the last 3 levels in a game you'll probably be in inferno..... Oh wait? isnt that max level end game content... Shouldnt they have made the last 3 ruby gems something else? Like increased potion and health globe number value, blah blah. 1%, 2%, 3%. There sloppy and i'd hope this gets tightened up before release. If there going to push back a games release time we want to see improvements on bad ideas or semi place holders like these.
they said you can socket end-game lvl gems into low lvl gear encouraging "twink gear". having a lvl 1 helm with +31% xp gain, then the rest of your gear gets +attack (helm is only thing that gets +to xp gain) so just dont put a red gem in your end game helm, its THAT simple. THINK before you complain

Something I can't really understand - isn't there a point in the game when there will be a gem inflation? So everyone just needs about 10 gems of each at a high level/max level and then it can be used easy for all chars? Or will it be that hard to make one perfect, that it is almost impossible?
Hum, you need almost 20 THOUSAND perfect gems of one type to get the max level gem. And considering perfect gems are the best gems that are going to be dropped, yeah, it'll take quite a while.

its basicly a 1 time use, its a useless feature and reguardless if its going to be in lower level twink gear you can take the gems out of items throught the jeweler. Once you have one you dont need another. No on the level of inferno you see a ruby gem drop your going to be dissapointed and the first thing you'll say is Darn.

you have no idea how much its going to cost to remove a gem from an item. it could cost a TON to remove the highest lvl gem from an item therefor you definitely will want to make the right choice. its 1 specific gem effect on 1 specific item, i dont get why your complaining so hard over this extremely small thing

Again if it's going to take major money, in theory, to remove i high level gem and you put it on an armor thats level 12, why the hell would i remove it? i wouldn't, i would save it as it is for another char, Now the problem starts when you have to upgrade your armor to the next level up, again in theory your going to pay top dollar to yank the suker out and resocket it? It sounds slopy for a really bland effect on a high level item with multiple uses. Again why not make it an enchantment?
Because characters can now be sold, so +exp to rush characters to the max level is an obvious choice. And also +gold is a consistent income while +magic find is a gamble. Sure, there is potentially more loot to be had, but there is also the potential that getting double the gold would pay off faster.

you find a much better helm thats worth unsocketing and resocketing it? duh lol. if your sporting a lvl 1 helm and your lvl 20+ and you have the cash to unsocket, you will. its not that hard. enchantment is a equally good idea, too bad u dont work at blizzard. its FINE this way and fine your way. there really isnt an issue here except your whining just to whine like most impatient D3 fans. get over it and enjoy the game on release like everyone will. bitching over minor details that really arent bad to begin with is just sad. bitch over the unattuned rune system/nephlam alters because its the only thing in the game that is actually an issue with a lot of people.

If you have a helm (for example) with 3 sockets, there's no point upgrading the gems until you have 5 of a specific grade of Gem.
Example, using Topaz's
Flawless Square Topaz - 19% Gold From Monsters
Perfect Square Topaz - 21% Gold From Monsters
Radiant Square Topaz - 23% Gold From Monsters
Star Topaz - 25% Gold From Monsters
Flawless Star Topaz - 27% Gold From Monsters
Perfect Star Topaz - 29% Gold From Monsters
Radiant Star Topaz - 31% Gold From Monsters
You'd rather have 3 Flawless Square Topza's socketed in a Helmet, giving you a total of 57% extra gold, rather than getting 21% extra gold by combining them. Until you get to such a point that you want the extra slot for, say, 10% life, if you are just going to farm (or be a fourth player in a game who is farming) then you need 5 of a gem grade to level it up and not lose any benefits.
big disappointment for me about the gems so far. not many options, some useless. i would really expect more to come.
also the last "rank" of the rune isnt a big improvement to previous. just basic progression. to make a rune with 58 vit i need 3 runes with 54 vit ? not sure i will do that. personally i would rather sell the 58 vit rune or those 3 54 vit runes and use by myself the 54 vit also... i dont see much of point in using the best runes by myself when the progress is totally linear and small.
