I myself am a necro summoner player, so the Witch Doctor would seem to be the logical choice, except that the first time around I want my power gain with each new level or item to be obvious. If you grab a nice armor on a ranged class, you won't be appreciating the small differences they provide since you aren't right up in the enemies' faces getting smacked around. The barbarian makes increased DPS and damage mitigation obvious.
I usually end up playing some tanky melee class (i.e. barbarian) because of the "friends" option, my gf always wants to play casters. But I don't mind, it makes me feel tough
been thinking about this myself lately. Playing a demon hunter because ranged has always been m best playstyle and my mate is rolling monk. liking the monk DH combo for renas!
I voted other because though I will be starting with the Barbarian, it is not my favourite class or my favourite playstyle. I choose him simply because I know him. There will be so much to learn in the game, so many systems like crafting, the followers, new gear types, new resource system, traits, runes etc. that taking a completely unknown class would be a little overwhelming and would force me to focus less on learning the new systems and focus more on the dozens of new skills the given class has. With Barbarian there won't be so many new skills which will give me time to understand all the other systems so that when I play a new class, I'll already be D3-savvy.

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head!
Planning monk or Barb first. Then Wizard second. I remember reading about play throughs with the Barb and how quick they can go through without the need to upgrade their gear so often. I'll stack good gear onto my wizard if some good drops come along, making it an easier start for wizard since he'll have better stats in hp and others.

Probably gonna play Wizard first due to teleport and dps, then play all other class to see how thier pvp works... then from there I will know who I want to be for arena
Always been and probably always will be a caster. Reminiscing ye olde days of D2 classic, the very first char I made was a barb and he plain sucked. Knowing not how to assign skills nor stats properly, he was an easy target at lvl 18(!!) for every monster in the Outer Cloister. Things turned out better in the end, but after that melee fiasco I turned to play as a powerful caster in every other game basically, and I've stuck with it ever since.
So here's for a Wizard as my first D3 char.
What also boosts this choice is the fact that every time I "restart" D2 I pick a sorc in order to teleport and do some magic-finding.
Maybe when I have the time I can create the other genders of the classes. For now, it was just the canon versions of each.
This makes me think... I know I am going to make a witch doctor first because it is my least favorite archetype, as I explained.
But which gender should I choose? I always related agility and magic with female characters and strength and lore with male characters, but the witch doctor seems like something I never thought about.
Maybe this could be a new poll (Which gender combines the most with each character and why)?
I believe all of them are improtant factors, but I am going to play them all anyway, so bring it on! =D
I'm so with you on that. My friends get mad at me for never being able to make up my mind and sticking with one class! I will most likely be like "omg this staff would be perfect for a monk!" or " dear lord, did you see the stats on that crossbow?" mwahahaha, can't wait!
Lore is what truly gets me into a class. Strangely, if I don't really like a class, it is often cause of my play style combined with that character's lore. For instance, I do not like the Wizard at all. Partly because I'm not a caster type player, but also because I think their background story is lame. Their motives are lame. It was similar to the Sorceress in D2. Her motivation was to prove the superiority of elemental magics over those of other disciplines. It seemed too quaint or vain. The motives of the Wizard seem similarly vain to me. Some may find them interesting, but I really don't.
With the Demon Hunter, sometimes I do prefer a ranged character for my play style. And I do find the background story to the Demon Hunter mildly interesting. I say mildly cause it seems a bit trite. It's like a revenge story. I really like the Witch Doctor's background story, but I can't quite tell what the Witch Doctor's motivations are supposed to be. They obviously are closest to the pragmatism of the Necromancer. They also seem driven by learning. They just want to learn more about the secrets of the world and not even for self-interest but just for the sake of knowing. I also like summoning as a play style but summoners often seem to take a backseat toward killing power and more geared toward surviving and tanking. I just hope to see the Witch Doctor on equal killing power with all other classes as the Necromancer failed to be through so many patches.
I have argued though that I don't think there's anything wrong with each class being more predisposed toward a certain role of combat. As if being in a party makes a bigger difference with diversity. I don't know.
I've yet to be really inspired by the Monk's background story (not nearly as cool as the Assassin's), but man I love me some nice claw weapons.
I'm going to play a Wizard first, then maybe a Barbarian. I just love the feeling of that raw, destructive power balanced by fast and effective ability usage. I also love the lore behind the Wizard: an unpredictable, frighteningly powerful rogue magus, beholden to none who wishes to delve into the deepest secretes of the universe.

I'm a necro player, I like summons, so WD will be my first.
But DH feeling, look and skills seem quite interesting and I think it'll be my second.
Thanks Caniroth for the awesome sig!

Siaynoq's Playthroughs
it just seems like a really solid caster class!!!!!!!!
Blizzard will probably allow players to have similar names with a Character Codes system
