I was under the impression that you had to literally 'lay' the traps down as you reiterated in your post. Therefore while in a group you will have to go near the mobs, thus losing damage bonuses or making yourself vulnerable to damage? Soloing, ST will be the first build that I try out no doubt, but in a group because of the function that it serves as a move which must be triggered, the maneuver seems inimical for the DH's role. That being said there are obvious ways to get around this.

At least on Normal difficulty a basic low-level variant of this. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#WSYTd!Yc!aaaaZ Seems perfectly fine.Played with it both co-op and solo. Obviously you'll change runes as new/beeter ones become available for you play sty;e but form pretty much lvl 20 on you' can spam bolas + spike trap for fun times. I admit I appreciate the wide projectile size of bolas since I'm apparently bad at aiming =P
I'ma use a build very similar to this, and play around with the last 2 abilities some. This build would make single target damage much higher, without sacrificing that much aoe damage(scenarios will make 1 better than the other, but overall i think they're pretty equatable).
