I just ran a few numbers and I'm getting on average about 15 million exp per hour.
It seems pretty low to me, I think Alkaizer was getting 50-60 toward the end. Granted his gear kicked my gear's ass, and barb =/= WD.
Lately my route has been "The Second Heart" quest - build up my stacks in stonefort and keep 3, then do keep 1, then the quest through to killing Azmodan (who yields about 300k xp with 5x NV, not bad). Doing the famed "Alkaizer" route doesn't really boost my xp / hour much, and jeez it's boring, same 5 maps over and over.
I'm using the "Spirit Bears" build which another poster has provided us with so much excellent information on, and it feels fast compared to anything else I've done - its just that I've got the speed bug now and more is never enough. Link to the build guide: http://www.diablofan...-farming-build/
Edit: Just realized that given the time it takes, bosses really aren't good xp / hour, which is probably why more advanced players don't bother. Skipping them should boost my numbers a bit. Including the time it takes to run in from the entrance to each boss, and for Cydaea, the time it takes to zone to Core of Arreat after killing her - all running that I wouldn't be doing if I skipped them - Cydaea provided me with ~8m xp/hour, and Azmodan ~10m - much lower than just running maps.
Edit 2: @ Chonaire, can you link profile? Gear is a huge part of kill speed, it's helpful to know what gear you have.
I do 15-16 mil/hour on my well geared monk. But that's clearing the whole act, I don't have optimized farming runs (can't be bothered running same small route over and over again).
Enjoying the game is more important than exp/hour.
I'm doing alkaizers route + depth 1 + both stonfront maps, that is 25-28min run for me. This route give me 15-17mil, so in total about 40-42mil/hour.
I'm a WD with 141k dps(without PtV)/800-850all res and 44k hp, just run with Acid cloud, 1-2 shots and dead mobs. Bears for elites.
But still i feel like slowpoke. Is there is some level 65+ Paragon, whats your mil/hr. Tnx
When I dumped all my gold into glass cannon gear I was burning at ~20mil full-steam-ahead. I've now taken most of it to the AH for resale and plan to try a different gearing approach more focused on staying alive. I think minimizing deaths in act3 is more important than anything else. The walk back from checkpoints in most of that act is brutal.
Hey guys, I really got this exp bug now and I'm compiling some data on exp and exp/hour. Once I get 5 samples from every act 3 map which I considered worth the time I'm going to post the data -- would that data be best posted in a reply in this thread, or in a new thread so that more people might see it?

How do you do both stonefort maps, assuming you're not starting at the first quest of act 3?

I'm averaging about 40 mil EXP per hour as a wizard going from Core --> Tower of the Damned 1 --> Arreat 1 --> Bridge --> Keeps 2, 1 --> Repeat.
I've slowed down on the effort scale as it's becoming awfully repetitive. Nowadays, especially after hitting Plvl 50, I just run 15-30 minutes at a time before going AFK.
I never do bosses. I never pick up items below level 63 other than jewelry and uniques. I don't pick up plans other than Exalted Grand or legendary. I don't pick up off-hands or 2h weapons other than bows/crossbows. I ignore all blues, gems, tomes, and potions. At below 5 NV, I even ignore goblins.

This is key, as far as I understand it. Taking the method of starting at the checkpoint just before Azmodan and working backward to high-value waypoints appears to be far and away the superior method. Once you have that basic template down, there's little to be done aside from accelerating the rate at which you kill elites, trash, and up your movement speed. I never took the extreme position of not picking up ilvl 61+ rares (although I have ignored blues and misc junk like gems and tomes for a while), but I don't actually grind enough for such a hair-splitting efficiency move to matter. I put in 1-2 runs of act3 (usually just 1) per night a couple nights a week and that is why i'm still plvl 25. :/

Actually I'm finding some surprising things. For example my Stonefort and Keep lv 1 exp is pretty bad, 15-18 mill / hour. But I'm getting 30+ in Arreat lv 1, a map most farmers ignore. And the reason you want to start in Core is that it's a short zone with at least one pack, usually two - you want to stack up in these quick zones, then do the longer ones, which have more available exp, with a full 5stack. I'll probably post my data later tonight in the general forum, but it's looking like my runs will go Core -> Keep 3 -> Tower Damned 1 -> Arreat 1 + 2 -> Fields of Slaughter -> Rakkis south.
ps - to the person who doesn't pick up offhands, why? They can be worth a ton just like anything else. Granted, the lower demand means they tend to sell slower, but still.

That's an excellent point. It's very important to optimize how quickly you collect those NV stacks. I'd love to see that data about which methods you found most effective. I've been going on nothing more than intuition and I have probably hurt my xp per hour by not mixing up that path very much.

I ran some tests in the past incorporating Skycrown Battlements/Stonefort, except it was somewhat out of the way (either walk from Bastion's Keep or take the waypoint which is stuck in the middle). It didn't quite fit in my runs since I tend to perfectly run 3 times per hour with my previous route. Still, Skycrown Battlements is legit... not so much with Stonefort. I feel like the latter has far fewer mob clusters.
I'm a little more lenient nowadays since I stopped caring so much about absolute efficiency. But Arreat Crater 1 (perhaps 2) and Keep level 2 must not be skipped. Those areas pack the absolute most mobs out of the Act 3 areas. The mob cluster is so dense in Keep level 2 that I can run through as an Archon wizard, and by the end of the level, still have 3-4 minutes remaining on my Archon.
And regarding off-hands... you're precisely right. I'm just too lazy to ID them and sell them.

Unfortunately I didn't collect data about elite packs per area. It's been a bit of a hassle tabbing, even in fullscreen windowed mode - unfortunately I don't currently have a dual-monitor setup which would have made that a bit easier.
On the other hand, looking back, I didn't really baes my statement on any logic, just a notion. You could also argue it the other way around; that it doesn't matter what order you do them in because you're likely to kill as much trash between each pack while stacking up no matter what maps you start with. In my defense, I may have gotten the notion because I only took data with 5 stacks, so figuring out where to stack up first was on my mind.
Jaetch - I'd love to do keep 2 but the spirit bears build uses only zombie dogs as pets, and does rely on them to tank for you. Since fallen maniacs utterly destroy zdogs it's simply not an option for me. I did love that map when I played my WW barb though.

I'm trying to unpack the notion myself, but I can't shake the (possibly unfounded) feeling that there is merit to that assumption. There are certainly some waypoint locations one could start with that will cause a lot of trash-killing to occur prior to many NV stacks accruing. ie. If you went to stonefort (to use a rather extreme example) from square one and then on to the fields. There may ultimately be a degree of overlap due to time spent jogging between superior NV waypoints and better farming zones, but I would be troubled to say that completely negates the benefit.
Perhaps it's late and my intensive grading has fried the old noggin.
About 30-33m / hr as WD with ~700 resists/40K hp/200 MF/55K dps unbuffed.
I'm using this build http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#fPUdTY!TYe!caacZc - in high populated zones fetishes are ready for almost every elite pack and droped on top of elites fetish ambush does insane amount of dmg. Constantly reseting spirit walk provide extra immunity and run speed, zombie bears clear everything in seconds and soul harvest runed for 230% dmg nuke trash pretty good. Actually i still die in 1 of 4-5 runs simply becouse i drop my attention and overcommit, but generally it's almost impossible to die unless you're tired and doing stupid things. Also i'm doing baracks lvl 3 to waypoint for 3 elite spawns, even though i'm sure it's exp loss this zone blessed me with ~50 mil in past couple of days so i feel bad avoiding it now )))
P.S. Don't have leoric signets, with them on me and mercenary could probably reach 40M/hr.
Btw thnx for mentioning areat crater 1, never tried it.
After watching Alkaizer's stream, I dumped my CM wiz and went WW barb. I originally hated melee, but it was so efficient that I couldn't resist. If I was going to level up other 60's, this barb is going to feed them.
I do Alkaizer runs, and get about 30m/hr. I'm really paranoid about missing legendaries, so I'm not as efficient as I could be. I pick up all yellows and when I get a sec and my Berserker isn't up, I chuck everything under lvl 60 on the ground.
One day, I snatched 3 legendaries in a 2 hour time period, man - that makes the game so much more fun.
I have a question for anyone who knows, where did Alkaizer's old stream vids go? Did he delete them? Got really good tips while farming.

"The Unchosen" Pain of Admirance Sigil (For those without -Feat of Strength-):
I don't understand why people do not do Azmodan. Does it take too long?
I can kill him in less than 30 seconds, so there is absolutely no reason not to kill him.
Also it does matter on which order you get the stacks.
You answered your question yourself - killing Asmo or not depends on your route. Myself i start from Areat Core zone so killing asmo with 1-2 NV stacks or returning later on feels like a waste of time. Also i never once got a worthy loot from bosses so leaving them alive doesn't bother me in the slightest.
- 3. player at lvl 100
- 50 to 60 mill xp per hour
- no Leorics
- no gear for billions of gold
Seriously doubt that exp rate is possible to achieve by WD (since it's a WD forum anyway), since we've to stop for ZB casts and even with cd reset passive spirit walk is still inferior to sprint/WOTB as a speed booster. Also i don't think that skiping elites is worth it since killing elites in my 55K dps gear takes few seconds anyway, better geared WDs probably don't even notice them.
P.S. Going to try your farm route thought since it's quite often that i've only 3-4 stacks by core and tower.

This high exp/hours is ONLY for barbs, due to 75% speed bonus almost 70% uptime. No other classes can do it so fast.
Just did it. 11.8mil exp in 16mins. (So if i'm very lucky, 4-5stacks by core and damned 1, then it possible to get around 45-46mils hr). Still good.
Also i skipped only one elite in crater 2, fat mages.
Route seems fine : )
Here is my gear and skills http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Naggash-2811/hero/59371
I get 25-30M per hour as a WD although I do use MF gear to make sure I cap out MF at 404. I'd probably pull 30-35 in my real gear but I'd rather have better drops.
