This is just my levelling build for day 1 of season 14. Naturally it may change depending on loot drops but nothing specific is strictly needed. Using the shards from the challenge rift, I hope to get Grasps of Essence (high probability) and the build then revolves around corpse explosion. It would still perform relatively well without the gloves though. The other items are nice things to find but none of it is needed and you'll just use whatever legendaries you find.

If I get the gloves early with the shards then I'll save the remaining shards for Golemskin Breeches (available at level 23).

How it plays:

Most damage comes from corpse explosion with corpse lance taking out rift guardians and tough elites. Flesh golem will generate a pile of corpses at the start and as needed. Blood rush can also generate one but not until level 49. Corpse lance has very good range and can pick off central mobs to create a corpse for you to explode where you actually need it.

Skeletons provide some passive damage and tanking. I may replace with Aura of Frailty at level 39, in which case I would swap the passive 'Rigor Mortis' with 'Spreading Malediction'. Bone spikes is a filler attack. Without skeletons there are no essence spenders so that could be swapped out for something else; Bone spirit perhaps.

Other Alternatives:

Skeletal mages: gift of death - This is nice as it will kill few mobs and then generate a corpse of it's own, but the gameplay was moving a bit too fast for that.

Skeletal mages: singularity - Nice damage but I found myself intentionally casting bone spikes to restore essence which wastes time. If I happened to find a Circle of Nailuj I would adjust the build to include it.

Corpse explosion: I keep switching between 'bloody mess' and 'shrapnel'. I can't totally decide which I prefer.

I'm very open to any feedback.

Build Guide

Other tips for the beginning of season:

  1. It's very important to complete the Challenge rift after creating your seasonal character. When you do the challenge rift with your new seasonal character you will get the following rewards:
  2. DeathBreaths: 10
    BloodShards: 475
    Gold: 4.6m
Act I-V mats: 15 of each
    Reusable parts (white): 318
    Arcane Dust (blue): 301
    Veiled Crystal (yellow): 107
  3. Create an 'Adventure' game on Master difficulty, take the weapons from your follower (templar in most cases) and see if any easy-to-reach bosses are set as bounties. In order of preference this would be: Zoltan Kulle, Maghda, Skeleton King, Belial. If they're a bounty, go kill them. Avoid killing anything en-route, they're a lot easier if you begin the fight at level 1.
  4. Upgrade blacksmith to max level (costs gold and 1 DB). Spend blood shards - google 'd3 planner kadala', select your class and set the level to 1 to see what's on offer. You don't need to spend them all at level 1 but some items provide very good bonuses.
  5. Craft an appropriate weapon. Level 8 2h axe for most.
  6. Drop the difficulty down to 'hard' and go get Kanai's cube. The massacre bonuses from the Ruins of Sescheron are good and you may want to use 5 of your Death's Breaths to extract a power from an item you got from Kadala. I plan to cube the Grasps of Essence for example. Also, if you use the cube to convert 100 reusable parts into 100 veiled crystals, your crafting options increase significantly.
  7. After getting the cube you're likely to be level 11 or higher. If not, clear Halls of Agony level 3. At level 11, search all acts for vendors with 'the fence' in their names. They will sell jewellery. You specifically want '+#-# damage'. In a group of 4 you can check one act each and tell your party members if you find them. It's worth creating new game a few times to get these.
  8. Craft some other weapons. Most significantly, a level 70 weapon with reduced levels. Google if you're unsure of the exact method. I'll also be crafting every 2h axe up to level 41 if I have enough resources after getting a decent 70 weapon. I will aim to get +int or a socket on all weapons and I'll use the Mystic to roll higher damage numbers. It's worth noting that holding ctrl over these crafted weapons does not show accurate possible damage bonuses. The level 16 crafted axe for example may provide +3-4 dmg and suggest that this is max when you hold ctrl... but in truth you can roll it to +9-12. You can also get 5-6 level reductions on the level 33+ axes which is nice... but it's not really worth the time/resources to attempt to roll them on the weapons. Another note: If a weapon has had any stat re-rolled, it won't be salvaged when you click 'salvage all'. For this reason I will still reroll on a near-perfect item at least once.
  9. Rift to 70. remember to equip better weapons as they become level appropriate.
