Demon Hunter: A Class to Love!

Table of contents:
  • Gearing up and Stat priorities

  • Builds (For farming and Uber running)

  • Suggestions for farming routes (ALL Acts included)

  • Explanation of Set Bonuses and Elemental Affixes

  • Helpful links to compare gear

  • Summary

[Off-topic] So, to start this off I just want to say that I've spent 350ish hours on my demon hunter worth of ingame time, working my way through many experimental builds which has resulted in what I'm about to share with everyone! Also I know this is my first post on this forum, I felt I just had to share this after leeching for such a long time!
Cant get tables to work on this forum for some reason so I highly suggest you download the word document as attached at the bottom!
You can also use the googledocs I'll link here: https://docs.google....OUV2YmJWZDVUTHc

Terminology (Legend for the guide)

CC – Critical hit chance
CD – Critical hit damage
IAS – Increased attack speed
AR/Allres – “All resistance” (resistance to all elements)
MS – Movement speed
MF – Magic find
GF – Gold find
LS – Life steal
LoH – Life on hit
LaeK – Life after each kill
MP –Monster Power
BiS – Best in slot item
XP – Experience points
HP – Health points
  • 1. Gearing up and Stat priorities

I'll start up with listing the slots piece by piece and recommending what you should focus on in terms of stats. I will list legendary items along with rare items and the lists will be in no order of certain “must-have”-status. Will only list the items I find as viable choices. These stat priorities obviously change between HC and SC.

Basic stat priority for defensive stats: AR/Vita>Phys res>Armor>Life regen
Basic stat priority for offensive stats: Dex>CC>IAS>CD

Helm:
What you look for in a helm is based on what your going to do with your demon hunter. If going for paragon levels you'll need a socket most likely and will mean your choices might be limited.

Item
Why I recommend it and for which build
Negatives
Mempo of Twilight
Basically everything you would want in a helm. Get CC as random roll if possible. BiS according to many if not going for set bonuses
Mempo can be Extremely expensive especially with CC as random roll so will most likely not be the first choice for many.
Natalya's Sight [1.0.5 set version]
Has a socket and If your going for this set for bonuses (which I will explain later)
Quiet low actual dps stats as base rolls and would have to rely on random rolls to get crit
Natalya's Gaze [Legacy]
You will have to use this to get the 4set legacy set bonus, Look for socket and crit
ONLY use this if going for 4-set legacy set bonus since the base rolls are a lot worse then the new one.
Andariels Visage
Good to start off with, has IAS/CC/Dex as base rolls, the “poor” mans Mempo to many. Look for socket or high dex/vita depending on preference
Important is the +fire dmg taken stat, get as low as you can if going for this.
Rare helm
For a really low budget start helm get one with Dex>Vita>AR>CC>Socket
Can be really hard to find anything that beats Andy head even on a really low budget.

Shoulder:
Vile Ward
Can roll the highest dex (300) possible and has everything you will want on shoulders as a base almost.
Can be very expensive with high stats.
Rare shoulder
When searching prio in this order: Dex>AR>Vita>Phys resist>Armor>%Life>Life regen

Chest: Most variable slot in the gear if Not going for set bonuses in my opinion
Natalya's Embrace [1.0.5 set version]
Has 3 sockets, decent Dex and %Life along with skill bonuses as a base roll which makes this the choice for many. Look for random stats such as +Max discipline, AR or Vita
Can be very expensive with the “right” random rolls.
Natalya's Shadow [Legacy]
Has almost the same stats as the new one but a bit worse. Look for the same random rolls.
ONLY use this if going for 4-set legacy set bonus since the base rolls are a lot worse then the new one.
The Inquisitor
Has 12%MS as base roll which makes this a very good starter chest if your on a budget. High prio on sockets as random roll or get Vita.
Doesn't have sockets as a base roll.
Blackthorne's Surcoat
Very tanky option if you can land one with Dex as a random roll.
No main stat as base roll which makes it expensive most likely.
Inna's Vast Expanse
Has a lot of the desired stats (Dex/Vita/%life) along with 3 sockets as a base roll, use if going for 2 set bonus of Inna's.
Can be very expensive in comparison but worth it if your going for 2-set Inna's
Tyrael's Might
Has MS as base roll along with %dmg to demons, High Dex/AR.
Missing sockets/vita as base rolls which makes the ones that have those very expensive.
Cindercoat
Starter chest if you can't find any decent others, look for sockets>Vita in terms of random rolls.
Low base rolls and no sockets as base makes this quiet bad for DH's but I thought I'd include it as it's still viable.
Rare chest
Stat prio: Dex>AR>Vita>Phys resist>Sockets

Gloves:
Tasker and Theo
Only gloves with a socket, Look for CC/High dex as random rolls
Extremely rare to find a pair with stats the can compete in comparison to rares.
Sage's Gesture
Base rolls are interesting with crit, armor and vita, Look for Dex/IAS/CD as random rolls
Extremely rare to find a pair with stats the can compete in comparison to rares.
Rare gloves:
The only way to go if u ask me. Stat prio is: Dex>CC>IAS>CD>AR/Vita, Aim for at least a pair with Dex/CC/IAS and add rolls accordingly to your budget

Bracers:
Lacuni Prowlers
Only bracers with MS and IAS as base rolls, Look for Dex, CC and AR/Vita as random rolls
Extremely expensive with good random rolls
Strongarm Bracers
If your not looking for MS from Lacuni then these will be the most logical starter choice even on a budget. Has CC, High dex and %life along with armor as base stats and the knockback is very nice if you don't mind it too much.
In comparison to Lacunis they miss IAS obviously.
Rare bracers
Stat prio: Dex>Crit>AR>Vita

Belts:
The Whiching Hour
Only high level belt with IAS and CD as base rolls, Look for Dex>Vita/AR as random roll
Extremely expensive with good random rolls
Inna's Favor
Very good base rolls with crit being one of them. Use if going for 2-set bonus from Inna's. Has x% Holy damage aswell but wont affect dps too much, which I'll explain later!
Expensive when you compare it vs rares that could be a lot better.
Rare belt
Stat prio: Dex>AR/Vita

Pants:
Inna's Temperance
Only legs with IAS/CC/MS and comes with Dex+2 sockets as base rolls, any pair will most likely beat any alternative. Look for AR/Vita as random rolls
Can be expensive with good random rolls.
Blackthorne's Jousting Mail
Tanky alternative, Look for sockets or AR as random rolls.
Not too high dps stats makes them less interesting.
Depth Diggers
High dex and high AR along with mf/gf makes these interesting, Look for sockets or Vita as random rolls
Expensive with the right random rolls.
Rare pants
Stat prio: Dex>AR>Vita>sockets>Armor

Boots: By far the easiest way to get MS
Natalya's Bloody Footprints [1.0.5 set version]
Has all you want from boots as base rolls, Decent/High Dex, High AR, armor and MS, Look for Vita/Phys res as random rolls
Can be expensive with good random rolls.
Natalya's Soul [Legacy]
Required to reach legacy 4-set bonus
No main stat (Dex) as base rolls so can become very expensive with Dex as random roll, ONLY use if going for legacy 4-set bonus
Fire Walkers
Decent Dex and MS as base rolls and adds the burning ground effect.
Hard to find a comparable pair with rares in the same pricerange.
Ice Climbers
Highest possible Dex for boots, %Life and High AR along with being the only boots with a socket makes these very interesting.
No MS as base makes the ones with MS random roll very expensive.
Rare boots
Stat prio: Dex>MS>AR/Vita

Amulet:
Ouroboros
To list at least one set/legendary I had to include this. Look for AS, Dex and CD as random rolls

Rare Amulet
The only choice for demon hunters if you ask me. Stat prio: Dex>CC>IAS>CD>Avg dmg>Vita/AR/LoH/LaeK. Look for at least high Dex and CC here, add more stats according to you budget.

Rings:
Natalya's Reflection [1.0.5 set version]
IAS+Dex as base roll makes this the choice for those going for set bonuses, Look for CC>CD>Vita/AR as random rolls.
Can be expensive with the “right” random rolls.
Natalya's Mark [Legacy]
IAS+Dex as base rolls but lower then the new version.
ONLY use if going for 4-set legacy.
Litany of the Undaunted
High Dex, High AR and CC is very nice as base rolls, Look for IAS or Vita as random roll
Can be expensive with the “right” random roll.
The Wailing Host
High Dex, Dmg vs Elites and CC is very nice as base rolls, Look for IAS or AR/Vita as random roll
Can be expensive with the “right” random roll.
Hellfire Ring
The obvious choice if paragon grinding. Can roll very good random stats.
Can be hard to roll a good one
Stone of Jordan
Just had to include this as it's the good old SoJ(!). Look for one that fits your needs when looking at skillbonuses.
No crit or IAS possible.
Unity
Avg dmg, Dex, Crit and Dmg vs Elites along with LOH makes this an interesting ring. Look for IAS>CD>Vita/AR as random roll
Can be expensive with the “right” random roll.
Rare rings
Very variable choice. Stat prio: Dex>CC>IAS>CD>Avg Dmg>AR/Vita/armor

Weapon:
Manticore
Only weapon in the game with 2 sockets possible makes this very hard to beat. Look for High Dps>2 sockets>Dex>Vita/LoH/Laek for random roll.
Very expensive with the “right” random rolls.
Windforce
The knockback on this makes it interesting and it's a bow type obviously if you prefer that. Look for Socket>CD>High dex as random roll.
Hard to compare vs Manticore
Calamity
Adds Mark for Death to target so you don't have to use the skill and is Extremely fast. Look for Socket as a random roll.
Can be expensive with a socket and high dps.
Rare Weapons
Stat prio: DPS>Dex/CD>Socket
With the legendary weapons of 1.0.5 coming in to the mix and being very affordable even on a tight budget I'd go for one of them.

Quivers: Not going to list shields since I don't find it viable
Dead Mans Legacy
Everything you could ask for, High Dex, High CC, Skill bonuses, High Vita and Hatred Regen as base makes this very hard to beat, Look for higher stats or Max discipline as a random roll.

Rare Quiver
Stat prio: Dex>CC>IAS>Vita>Max discipline>Skill bonuses
You'd need a sick rare even to compare to a bad Dead Mans Legacy

2. Builds
In this section I will link the builds I've tested that I find working decently and explain how effective I got them to work, there will of course be interchangeable skills in them as well since most builds comes down to personal preference. Place on skillbar is also very much up to your own preference.

Solo/Group farming build #1: http://eu.battle.net...gVhd!XeY!caYcZb
Explanation: My variation of the “cookie cutter”-build using the Hungering Arrow/Elemental arrow combo. My preference when it comes to paragon grinding and higher Mps

Solo/Group farming build #2: http://eu.battle.net...gVld!XeY!aYYccb
Explanation: Tried this with varied success on lower Mps (0-3)

Solo/Group farming build #3: http://eu.battle.net...gVed!Xef!ZaYccb
Explanation: Pure tank build if you ask me but it's very viable, almost unkillable with high res/LoH

My personal Uber killer build: http://eu.battle.net...gVRd!XeY!YaYcYb
Explanation: Using Marked for Death to increase party dmg (disregard this if you choose to go with Calamity as a weapon and just use the cookie cutter one)

3. Farming route Examples

Note: These routes are highly suggestive and can be changed and added to with personal preference in mind. Also note these routes are designed to get the most elite packs nothing else, for paragon farming I tribute everything to Alkaizer for that design :)

Act 1:
Start on beginning part of “The Imprisoned Angel”->
Clear Festering woods (Including dungeons)->
Clear Leorics manor+courtyard->
Clear Cemetary of the forsaken (Including the 3 mausoleums)->
Clear Halls of agony->Butcher
Optional: Find keywarden in Fields of Misery->
Profit and remake!

Act 2:
Start on quest “The Black Soulstone”->
Look for and clear The Vault of Assassins in Desolate sands->
Clear Sewers of Caldeum->
Clear top Black Canyon mines (the zone closes to the wp)->
Clear Road to Alcarnus->
Optional: Find keywarden in Dahlgur Oasis->
Profit and remake!
When farming Act 2 I highly suggest you make a game just to find “Vault of the Assassins” and then remake since you will start in the dungeon itself if you do so.

Act 3: (start quest varies on if you feel able to kill the spiderqueen)
Start on quest “The Second Heart” which is part 2 on “Heart of Sin”->
Clear Keep Depths Lvl 3->
Clear Skycrown Battlements+Stonefort->
Clear Rakkis crossing+ Fields of Slaughter->
Clear Tower of the Damned lvl 1->
Clear Arreat Crater lvl 2->
Clear the rest of the act.

Act 4: Not gonna get in to this act seeing as I never farmed here Ever and there is no reason to do so in my opinion with the trashmobs being a lot harder then act 1-3.

4. Explanations of Set bonuses and Elemental Affixes
This thread explains Elemental Affixes so good I don't think I have to be a hero and try to reinvent the wheel so to speak: http://www.diablofan...c-blue-clarify/

On the point of Set bonuses. There are a couple that comes in to play when talking about a demon hunter and gear.
To start with Natalyas [1.0.5] and [Legacy]:
2-set: +7% CC
3-set: +130 Dex
4-set: [1.0.5] +20 Max Discipline
4-set: [Legacy] Regenerate 2 Discipline every second

In comparison I say that the 1.0.5 one is a total blowout and is, not to exaggerate, really bad. You need to spend 10 seconds with less then your maximum discipline in a game to get more out of the Legacy one and it can free up a passive skill slot to exchange Nightstalker to something more viable. By all means, IF you feel you can afford a good legacy setup, go for it!

Inna's 2-set: +130 Dex

This comes in to play if you decide to go with the Inna's legs and plan to use the chest or belt, belt is the choice for most people.

5. Helpful links to compare gear
Jesta on this forum has spent his time working on: http://d3up.com/
Which offers character imports and a really good summary of your stats

6. Summary
As I said in the small section in the start of this guide I felt the need to share this after getting some rather good critique on my knowledge about the class from my friends and I've loved this class since the start of Diablo 3 only playing other classes to more fit the composition for my friends groups. I hope people will find this helpful and a good read, but bare in mind that the item section is my personal take on the current selection and does not take PvP in mind.

Demon Hunter Guide: What You Need to Know

Table of Contents:

1. Introduction

Hello, my name is Zucchero and this is a guide I've made to help out those who are stuck on their way to becoming what they wish in Diablo 3 or are just simply getting into the game. I cover multiple levels of gear in this guide, farm routes for all the acts of the game and a few builds which have proven themselves to be most effective in completing said routes.

I hope you'll find what you're about to read informative and helpful. Use this guide as a reference point and don't be afraid to improvise and improve using the data you have here!

2. Glossary of terms
  • AoE - Area of Effect.
  • All Res. - A defensive affix.
  • CC -  Critical hit chance.
  • CotA - Crypt of the Ancients, a dungeon located in the Act 1 zone, The Festering Woods.
  • CrD // Crit. Dmg - Critical hit damage.
  • Dex - Dexterity, primary attribute of the demon hunter.
  • Disc - Discipline, defense and utility resource of the demon hunter.
  • DH - Demon Hunter.
  • DPS - Damage per Second, your total damage output within a second. This is calculated through an equation based on the character's Attack Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Critical Hit Chance and Dexterity. Click here for a tool with which you can calculate the DPS of your character.
  • EHP - Effective health, which is determined through an equation that takes into account the HP (Health Points) of a character, his avoidance and his resistances/armor. Click here for a tool with which you can calculate the EHP of your character.
  • Hatred - The offensive resource of the Demon Hunter. It is generated by some abilities and consumed by others.
  • Int- Intelligence, a weak defensive attribute for demon hunters.
  • MF - Magic Find.
  • MS - Movement speed.
  • MP - Monster power level.
  • NPC - Non-player character.
  • Vit - Vitality, primary health attribute.
3. Builds

NOTE: All of the builds listed here have been tested in each of the farm routes that I have recommended. Builds 1 and 2 are fairly equal, the choice boils down to play style really. I've outlined their pros and cons so you can best decide for yourself. They can all be used in both solo-farming and group-farming without any drawbacks.

1. Build Number 1 - Hungering Arrow / Elemental Arrow -
Spoiler

2. Build Number 2  Bola Shot build (Immortal DH)
Spoiler

3. CotA farming build (only recommended for use in MP1-2 with medium to high-end gear) (SOLO ONLY)
Spoiler

4. Gear

NOTE 1: These guides are designed so that you have a rough idea of what gear you can expect, for the money you are willing to spend. When searching for gear upgrades on the AH based off of this guide, please be prepared to make slight adjustments (either increasing if the budget allows it or decreasing if the market price goes up too much) to the affix values, as prices vary constantly.

NOTE 2: I have not included any Magic Find in the mandatory searches. This is a very important aspect, as it skews results and you can never truly make a reliable guide if you factor in MF. In case you are looking for gear with MF, you can still use this guide as a template, as it outlines the basic stat combinations that make the class work, just be prepared to pay a lot more for gear with that particular affix.

As a rule of thumb, when you are looking for gear for a demon hunter, you should look out for the following things:
  • Dexterity is extremely important. The more dexterity you have, the more your Crit. Chance and Crit. Dmg matter and vice-versa. For example, at high end levels of gear ( 2400 dex, 50% crit chance, 40% attack speed and 300+ crit hit damage), a point of Dex will give you approximately 60 DPS.
  • You must strive for at least 40% Crit. Chance and 220% Crit. Dmg. , even at the lowest levels of gear.
  • Your absolute minimum amount of Dexterity should be around 1750.
1. Entry level gear (<10 million gold budget)

Spoiler

  2. Mid-range gear (25-50 million budget)

Spoiler

  3. Intermediate gear (50-100 million budget)
Spoiler

  4. High-end gear (100+ million budget)
Spoiler

  5. Near Best-in-Slot gear // Best-in-Slot gear (500 million+ budget)
Spoiler

5. Followers

NOTE: The Enchantress and Scoundrel are equally matched up to the highest levels of gear, while the Templar has a severe lack of utility  I highly recommended using the Enchantress or the Scoundrel and ignoring the Templar completely.

1. Enchantress
Spoiler

2. Scoundrel
Spoiler

3. Templar

6. Farm routes

1. Act I
  • Keywarden run

Spoiler

  • Efficiency farm run

Spoiler

  • Crypt of the Ancients Runs (SOLO ONLY);

Spoiler

2. Act II

  • Vault of the Assassins runs

Spoiler

  • Keywarden run

Spoiler

3. Act III

  • Azmodan run/Keywarden run

Spoiler

  • The long farm run:

Spoiler

4. Act IV

Act 4 is way too inefficient for farming in my opinion, very low mob density, mob difficulty is higher than previous acts with no extra benefit. The only real reason you’d come here is for the Infernal Machine plans, for which I recommend doing a clear from the first quest of the act up to the keeper himself, thus ensuring that you will have 5 Nephalem stacks when you reach him. Try MP3 so you have a higher chance of success when attempting to farm the plan (Mid-range level gear+).

7. Useful links

If you are ever in search of more information about Demon Hunters, or indeed Diablo 3 in general, check out these sites:
  • D3 Max Stats  - gives information on the maximum affixes that can roll on any one item. Extremely useful for making informed decisions on the AH.
  • Diablo Progress - fun and informative site, it ranks you against all the other players of the world, so you can have an idea where you on the ladder. Also, has lists of every item ever generated on  the D3 live servers.
  • An EHP calculator can be found at this site.
  • You can get a DPS calculator from this topic here, amazing work put into it by the author. (Excel is needed)
  • The Blizzard official Game Guide is also an excellent place to go for information, although it sometimes doesn't have what you are looking for.
  • And last, but not least, Diablo Fans !

Thank you for reading,

Zucchero
