i wasnt going to replace anything but my CPU so i figured go big or go home. after hours of spec/price comparing and compatibility checks i came up with an insane set up for only 1k. it would cost over double that for a pre-built computer of the same caliber. thats why i ALWAYS build my computers from www.newegg.com.
its a little hard at first learning whats better then what and whats compatible with what but it didnt take that long to learn. computer buiding is real easy and its sad people get ripped off big time by best buy and other places with those shitty insanely overpriced pre-builts.
--also keep in mind some of this is overkill so i dont have to worry about replacing anything for awhile. definitely dont need 8 gigs of RAM, a 6 core processor or a 800w power sup for just 1 card (YET!).

i5 2500k if you want value and power or i7 if you want straight power. Yeah it's 319 bucks but unless you plan on building another computer in 2 years might as well not skimp on the CPU especially since you're not skimping on the GPU.
i7 2600k - $320
ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 - $150 (ASUS has a good one too but power consumption/temperature/and SATA speed got good reviews on this thing).
GTX 570 - $350
GSkill RAM, great choice - $60
Pretty good PSU, I would look for something at least 80 Plus BRONZE and fully modular but it's still a good PSU you picked - $120
That ADATA SSD isn't bad but the Corsair Force 3 is much better for only $35 more. It has much better 4k Random Write speed which is the key measurement to look at when comparing SSDs (along with IOPS which it is also much better than that ADATA ). - $195 www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233191&Tpk=Corsair Force GT
You can stick with your case if you don't plan to OC (the i7 can OC 20+% on stock heatsink) or go with the Antec DF-85 ($160) or the Cooler Master HAF X ($200) If you want room and awesome airflow. The DF-85 is cheaper and gets cooler temps because the airflow is a little better but the HAF X is larger but that doesn't seem to be a huge concern for you. Both cases allow you to run your wires behind the motherboard plate for better airflow and a better look.
So not counting the cases I mentioned, my recommended rig is $1195 dollars which is only $166 dollars more for a MUCH, MUCH better machine. Not a little better, not kind of better...MUCH better.
Unless you are really restricted due to budget (or simply don't care about having the best stuff and want to save 200 dollars), I would HIGHLY recommend you throw the 200 extra dollars in and make these changes in order to make a killer machine that will last for 4-5 years (with a GPU upgrade along the way to stay super powerful with future games).
im not running insane tests on my computer or insane programs. my processor is WAY more then enough for anything im going to do. so paying for something better is pointless in a gaming computer, unless you plan on Quad boxing in WoW or something. same for the SSD.
i was going for as much power as i could get with it being at around 1k. while im sure those additions would make it much better i just dont need it. i will be able to run ANY current high graphic intensive video game on max settings with good FPS. and i'm not playing games that are super graphic intensive. i play SWTOR, WoW and going to be D3. all of those games arent graphic intensive so ill be able to run those at absolute max with perfect framerate.
even in the future for video games i wont need a better HD or CPU to run the games, ill just need to upgrade/add a better video card. thanks though

I actually also ordered my new pc and is expecting to get all the stuff tomorrow or next week sometime. I'll also make a thread like this just to brag!
Also, what frequency (for RAM) does that mobo support? Can't find on the net. Cause most decent mobo's default frequency is 1600MHz and in your case you'll have to OC to get the full potential of your RAM. Only reason I ask is cause I almost repeatedly made the mistake to buy a mobo which I had to overclock to get to 1600 (which my RAM is).
ill need to OC my RAM but thats not a big deal and only takes a few seconds. it would of cost double for a MOBO that supported 1866 speeds without OC. lol

Haha I know that. I just asked cause I couldn't find the default frequency on the internet and that you might have just skimmed over that detail cause you might have just based your mobo option on what you've heard or have seen reviews that it's a good mobo and didn't thought about that...but yes you did say that you spent hours comparing! Also cause, like I said, I've also just ordered my pc and almost shot myself in the foot by buying a mobo that's default frequency is less than 1600MHz....but yeah this was quite a long and perhaps useless explanation, but yeah you get the jiffy of it.

most MOBO's defaults are 1333 because thats the stock RAM speed put in all pre built computers. so unless it's one shitty MOBO you should still be able to overclock at a decent speed. the default speed is 1333, but it says it can go up to 2100 OC'd. also if you look at the reviews for my specific MOBO there is lots of 5 star's explaining how its great for OCing and they can get RAM to run at 2160mhz stable. now 1866 is fine with me, even 1600 is good, there is no real gain trying to boost up to 2000+ you wouldnt even notice the increase.

i dont know much about computers but i have a triple core laptop... but there are four cores in it (apparently?) any way to turn on or activate that other core?
Are there any games that will actually use 8gb of ram and utilise all 6 cores? Utill recently Skyrim was only able to use 2gb of ram
the RAM and CPU was uber cheap (60 bux for RAM, 150 for CPU) and i went overboard on purpose so i wouldnt have to replace either for many years. its always irritating having to replace parts in your comp early which is why i bought such nice parts. i can run any game on my camp on extreme graphics with no lag. but in a few years the top graphic intensive games will need more power (more RAM) and will utilize more cores.

TRIPLLE CORE... i lolled.
Annyhow, click on windows icon, then typ in search bar the following: msconfig
then you go to second tab (boot) then *advanced options*
then select *number of processors* and select highest number available, then ok and if asked for pc restart do it.
With default settings, Windows will use all available processors at boot. The only reason to mess with the setting is to limit the number of processors used for testing and diagnostic purposes.
I'm waiting for a release date before I upgrade. I was looking into getting an Alienware 17x R3/4. The problem with pc's is that you can always wait a little and get a better model. The R4 being a prime example.
I believe the Ivy Bridge processor will be released soon? Any of you guys keep up to date on that kind of stuff? Have any of you any idea when The 17x R4 will be released? I kind of hope D3 and the R4 will be released around the same time.

do not. i repeat. do NOT buy a pre-built computer!!!!
as you can see i spent $1,000 on my awesome set up right? im getting 200+ FPS on extreme graphics settings in SC2 with it. and i found a pre-built with around my same computer specs and it cost $2,600. so your literally paying over 2.5 times the amount for a pre-built then custom building it. you could do a few hours of research or heck even i could help you build an amazing gaming computer for around as much as i paid VS. you paying $2,000+ for the same thing. newegg.com will save you thousands. seriously.
if your interested (which i really hope you are for your wallets sake :P) send me a private message with what your budget is and what kind of set up your wanting.

I appretiate the offer, and excuse my ignorance, but is it possible to build a gaming laptop easily? I live in Japan at the moment so it's out of the question to not buy something portable. I know of other gaming laptops, but this one seems to fill all the criteria for me, even though I'm aware I'm going to have to pay a premium.
No. Expect to shell out at least $600 for a laptop to run games well. Don't waste money buying a "gaming" laptop unless you're in need of a desktop replacement as you travel for your work. And even then, for heaven's sake avoid vendors like Alienware.
I don't have a desktop, I only have an old laptop. I've been abroad for almost 4 years in various countries, so it's no feasible to have a good desktop. I want a laptop that will fulfil all my needs, including high end gaming, I want to invest my money in something that will last me at least a long time without having to upgrade. I have around £1500 to spend ($2000+) so I want something good. What would you recommend if you had that to spend on a laptop?
Unless you're going to be doing encoding, rendering or something actually making use of 6 cores they'll just go to waste. Same with RAM, albeit little reason to skimp on RAM nowadays since its so cheap.
like i said multiple times, the RAM and processor was way overkill on purpose because they were cheap and i hate replacing them. the way games are being coded now a days it utilizes more then just 1 core, eventually they will have games that use a few. they separate each process of the game into a different task like rendering the environment is one task while the character itself is another.

ya like that other guy said you wont be able to build your own laptop, some laptops you can replace certain parts or add to it but buying a top of the line gaming laptop wont be cheap, but if your willing to spend 1500ish you can buy a really nice one.

It would take me a significant amount of time to correct the wrongs here.
So i'll just say a couple of things on topic:
1) This computer you built is not a beast,it's just a nice computer, look up hpnot1q's rig and then ask from some mod to rename the thread title
2) 200 fps+ on Sc2? Really? No argument here since i can get a solid 80 fps on Crysis Maxed settings when i look at the sky
3) This pc you built can adequately play (almost) any game on maxed settings
Good built overall
Beast built? No
P.S I know you're just gonna call me a troll again(oh wait) But that one time you got trolled by me i wasn't even trying to troll you,get over it man.
lmfao.... are you serious man? your "misinformation" is your personal opinion of what "beast" is? wow. hahaha. omg... sooo funny dude. i thought you were going to make some list of "oh this is false becaus bla bla technical gargin" but its your own personal opinion of a word. priceless. and starcraft 2 is hardly a graphic intesive game so ya 200 fps is not outstanding in a game.
all the other components besides the GPU is already overkill for any game to run on. only thing that could improve actual FPS is upgrade to the GTX 580 for an extra 200 bux, or SLI 2 cards. which is a waste of cash for a few extra frames. the difference between 50 FPS and 70 FPS isnt even noticeable. or the difference between extreme graphics and ultra. either way it looks awesome and runs smooth. cant complain for just a thousand bux
