I have been playing Titan quest (TQ) and diablo 1 lately and it's been real fun. Was looking for other ARPGs in that style that would be coming to the market other than D3 and stumbled across this.

I posted a couple of vids in our good old URT but thought it deserved its own thread.
Not much information was available regarding release dates, and the devs usually post updates on their official site (google is your friend).
Guys from ex-Iron Lore entertainment(makers of TQ) are on the job.
I find their pre-pre-pre alpha talk a bit funny considering no one would want to show a game that does not at least have the minimum amount of polish to lure audiences but hey that's the way they want to roll, so.....

What do you guys think?

I imagine having to go up against D3 could be a nightmare but it would be good to see other games make it as well(provided they are any good).

Looks entertaining enough. The graphics are definitely nice and I like the environments. Do I see them shooting guns in this? Should be interesting. Are there classes? I was reading through the homepage but it looks like they've yet to announce a lot more information about the game.

Looks interesting, but, in my opinion, it makes two mistakes that D3 also made (or will make): the 'squishy' sounds when you hit enemies; and enemies literally exploding when you kill them. I really hate these two things.

Looks decent, I would check it out if it was released before D3. I doubt it would though if it's currently in Alpha.

I haven't visited the Grim Dawn site for ages, so that gameplay video was a new one to me. Doesn't look bad at all. :)

I would definitely buy that game when it is released, but, as far as I know, they are planning to release it as a download only. And an oldtimer like myself wants a boxed copy...

Yes. What Crate had to say about the setting was: "Grim Dawn will be set in a unique fictional world that is loosely inspired by the Victorian Era but is not meant to actually take place on Earth ..." There were guns around in those days. Also, if you take a look at the picture in the bottom of this page, you can clearly see the musket in the other hand.

A thread about weapons can be found in the official forum. You have to create an account to see the pictures of those pistol models, though...

EDIT. Okay, here's the picture (just to save your time):

@ bleakparta- Thanks for the info, mate. I did not even notice guns in there...  :P
Not that I mind. At all.

@Siay- Regarding classes, I am having the impression they will be taking the TQ route whereby you will just have a guy or gal and then you specialize them into one or two available masteries. If that is the case, I hope they let us customize the appearance of the player we will be taking, a bit like the option offered in sports games or MMO's[?](I haven't played any but i heard it's like that).

I have been following this game as well. I hope it's released before Diablo or I probably won't get around to playing it for a while. I'm also a bit worried about the lack of official funding for the game but what they've done is amazing (think there's only a few guys working on it). It looks more fun than Titan Quest and that was an excellent game. The main problem in Titan Quest (for me) was how the story was told and the dialogue wasn't captivating .  It also needed more unique towns with unique npcs, not generic quest givers. Grim Dawn should be better with all the attention on one town for the first release.

The skill system will probably be similar to Titan Quest. In TQ there were 7 or 8 skill trees and you chose 1 tree to start with and get access to a second tree later. Each tree had about as many skills as a class in D2 had. So you could make heaps and heaps of builds like Warfare + Earth = Battle Mage or Hunting + Spirit = Necro with bow.

What Nekrodac said.

About the video, the gibs are just test giblets, they'll use better graphics in the final release so it will look less corny. They only explode when you crit I think.

Can't wait for the release! The question is, which game is gonna come out first?

My main problem with TQ was the setting. I guess it was too close to "real world", with historical characters, locations and so on. Perhaps I just prefer pure fantasy. :)

Personally, I don't believe that Grim Dawn will be released before Diablo III. Not before Q2 2012.

About the classes. Here's a quote from the FAQ: "We plan to release with 5 skill classes, each containing several skill trees. Additional skill classes will be introduced through downloadable add-ons. Players will be able to combine any two skill classes to explore powerful synergies that exist between the skill trees of different classes and experience the varying gameplay styles of each class build. It will be impossible to max out all the skills from two classes, so there will be plenty of experimentation to find the best way to allocate your points. Don't worry though, if you aren't satisfied with your build, you will be able to spend money to reclaim spent skill points."

Of course all is subject to change.

EDIT. Sorry. I just realized that the quote above doesn't tell much of the character classes, only about skill classes. I took a quick look at the forum discussions, but it appears that the devs haven't had much to tell about the possible character classes yet, only a brief mention about skills for the "soldier class"...

I liked the setting for that fact that each act had mythological creatures from that culture, and if you let your imagination wonder you could pretend that this was actual history. But they really needed to flesh out the storytelling to convince you that their world is authentic. If they had come up with an epic Tolkien-esque story it could have been brilliant.

It's a shame D3 will probably be first because I feel sorry for Crate, they're the underdogs here. If they got out a polished release before D3 more people will buy it as something to play while waiting for D3. The extra profit would be enough for Crate to make speedy expansions and properly support the game.

Anyone knows if the game is in Alpha yet? (not pre-alpha).
I could not find the info. If it is i'll maybe pre-order the game then, so i can play since i am really bored and have a lot of time in my hand.

Let me know. Thank you.

Man I just wanted to make a new thread for this game, but decided to search and make sure there isn't already a thread...I also discovered this game way back when, but at that time there were little info about it, almost just the vids.

Anywho, thought I would add some stuff that wasn't already discussed:
1) Realease date - 2012  :D
2) I almost forgot about the game...but they released this pic today, reason I wanted to make a thread. Facebook Page

3) Couple of screenshots from Jul-Aug 2011, check the rest here:

This is definitely a game worth waiting for. It's probably gonna be released at the end of next year, since the alpha isn't done yet...

4 more screenies from the alleys and buildings in the Abandoned Waterfront area (I like the idea of fighting threw little towns and such, it's something different and I like it!):

I hope those guys go for steam support. With steam and a reasonable price, a game like this can succed even in post D3 world !

"In time the hissing of her sanity

Faded out her voice and soiled her name

And like marked pages in a diary

Everything seemed clean that is unstained

The incoherent talk of ordinary days

Why would we really need to live?

Decide what is clear and what's within a haze

What you should take and what to give" - Opeth
