The January release is probably because they want to be sure that they can include the editor in it too, and the latest patches.

Faster than lightning we strike

The storyline in Torchlight is very 'thin' and the graphics are a little 'cheesy' BUT Torchlight has TWO advantages.
1. An editor that permits most types of mods - including total conversions
2. A LAN type multiplayer co-op mod is now in Alpha and may be released in a few weeks.
The Torchlight team have provided access to the original meshes and textures so the 'anime-style' graphics can be altered.
Given that the community has been waiting so long for D3 and that Torchlight is so 'mod friendly' I would guess that there are modders out there now planning a total conversion with uprated graphics and an immersive storyline - and one that will feature co-op multiplayer!
D3 can take as long as it likes to appear. The fact that it won't feature LAN play is enough to prevent me personally from buying it.
After all, why would I if Torchlight has the potential to replace it?

Flame on! I've heard it all before...

Not
Going
To
Happen
Just look at all Diablo clones, they have the potential to replace D2, but that is just not happening.

What hinders this from beeing created for D3? Torchlight doesn't include LAN, neither does D3, but it can be created for both. Anything is possible in single player.
The only advantage of Torchlight is the editor, and playing user created maps through TCP/IP is something I dislike. I want to be able to share to and find random people to try my maps quickly, without using tools like Hamachi. I would consider it a huge advantage if it came with a online service used for sharing maps and hosting/sharing user created content, but it doesn't.
