I played it (after playing D2) but didn't finish it. Its hard to enjoy an old game after you've played the sequel which fixes much of the problems that it has. However, if you're into it, id suggest playing it for the story and overall feel of the game because its a bit different. And it helps to understand where D2 came from.

Walk down the right back alley in Sin City... and you could find anything.

Diablo 1 is definately more of a challenge than Diablo 2. The mood is also more frightening and.... dare I say "realistic" feeling. It's a bit slower and sometimes more frustrating than D2, but I think it's also more satisfying to complete. If that sounds like something you want to try, then be sure to do so :)
If you run from him, run to the side where he's not holding his weapon. Else he knocks you back all the time and you can't escape. Bring alot of potions and just give him one of two hits between fleeing every time if you're a warrior.
If you still can't beat him with the warrior, or you're a rogue or sorcerer, lead him to a room with an open (non-blocked.... no body lying in the way) door and some of those bars for windows. Get him to go in there, then walk out and close the door. He's too stupid to open it. Now use a bow or magic to kill him through the bars.
You could also get him stuck on the stairs down if you can't find a room like that.

Haha, yeah, you have to either gain a few levels ahead or go in a room with open type walls and close the door, then shoot him with a bow for half an hour

You definetly want to play Diablo1 It is better than the second. Also for the butcher you should be around level 8 to take him on or if you want to take him on at level 4 use the bow technique.

If you want to arrange it
This world you can change it
If we could somehow make this
Christmas thing last
By helping a neighbor
Or even a stranger
And to know who needs help
You need only just ask

Diablo 1 would be a fun experience for you I think even with the outdated graphics. The atmosphere is extremely memorable and if you have any interest in old, medieval Christian views on hell the story will probably be very engaging for you. I know it was for me. Best of luck if you play it and enjoy!

I played D2 first myself (outside of a D1 demo when I was a kid) and didn't play one until maybe a year ago. Well worth it in my opinion, hell picked up the CD off ebay for like 5 bucks or something they might even have it on Good Old Games. I'd say if you want to go for the full feel of the Diablo franchise do it.

hey guys, I've never played diablo 1 is it worth my time?
Is the Space Pope reptilian? You're damn right it's worth your time. And don't let people try to tell you the graphics aren't that great or how it's such a drag that you can't run like in D2. I always tell people who have never tried it to at least give it a chance and be open minded. Though I don't think it requires a lot of open mindedness to get into. And many here have stated some good reasons to get into it.
Actually Rykker and I started new D1 characters last week and we plan on playing it all the through together. Good times.
