Quests like The Butcher and Skeleton king were quite iconic in Diablo. I liked them. Nevermind that the Butcher's cleaver wasn't very useful in the end, or leoric's (helm?) was just an early game item, they really lent mood to Diablo. And they were actually quests I felt like doing. Maybe it's because of the intro lines they say, maybe it's how dark and terrifying it was, and also maybe because they were very simple - kill the boss. Anyhow, I thought they were awesome, and I'd love to do a few more of these quests in Diablo 3 - the Siege Breaker fight is definitely going to be memorable if that's one of those quests.

Anyway, sry for the long intro. On to the question:

What do you want in a diablo 3 quest?

I don't like item-fetching, unless it's a really cool item at a place where you fight an awesome boss, like the one in d2 - hell (with the hammer). I don't want to just go kills some pest for some guy. But escorting someone can be fun. Or defending a place for a set amount of time until reinforcements arrive (so you can't kill them all, but u win by surviving). I guess I just don't like tedious quests where you don't know what you're looking for or where it is, but if you're doing something really cool while accomplishing the quest, that'll be fun.

Lore, the epic feeling, rewards, thrills, challenges. Seeing the result of your actions concretily , (however it's spelled), on the game world / characters, gives you a good feeling. You know what i'm talking about, right?

Thats for the quests. Side quests on the other hand don't have to have a big effect on the world, but lore and epic feeling for sure. It'd be cool to also see something new, never seen before in diablo.

I agree with Raiken on the item-fetching. Great thread bro.

I agree with your bit about the result of your actions... hopefully it can affect the story somehow, although they probably have a fixed ending, but maybe how you perform in 1 quest can affect what you have to do in another? Like maybe you fail to rescue some little girl... which causes the demons to turn her into one of them... which forces you to have to kill her in a later quest, but if you rescued her, then you'd have to face some other demon..
Or maybe, if you fail to rescue the blacksmith of the town, you can't buy weapons... or another new blacksmith comes in who sells items at a much higher price...

I like quests that are pretty straight forward like "Go here and kill this guy" but at the same time those can get boring after a while, I like the Idea of holding off a horde of enemies and try and survive, and I also agree I don't like the needle in a hay stack quests that just bore me to death.

it would be cool if you could fight with a whole army on your side, maybe there's a commander telling you what to do at various points - this could either be the holding off monsters quest, or just ppl from the world rallying to fight a common enemy, haha, that'll be nice

I just want it to be varied all the time. The quest type does not matter.
At night, high up in the heavens we fight
Faster than lightning we strike
Like fires that rip through the night
Surrounded by light
