No you said robe.
A robe is made of cloth, it's not possible or very clever to make a robe out of leather.

Hmm... Good point.

And back on topic!
I picture the Monk's armor not very solid with lots of exposed skin.
Gives maximum movement and agility.

err... Am I only who doesn't like fist weapons?
But katana? Hell yes i want that! :D

and yes OFC the monk armor should be as epic as barbarians! indimitating and all that. but not as heavy. It would be silly for a character as fast as monk to rush around in full platearmor.

Well, I'm sure we can all agree on that we don't want it to be bulking and "epic" in those terms.
Slim and generally awesome would look the best on the Monk.

Well any armor can look badass in a game like D3 since the armors arent going to look like they do in reality, ya know their gonna be all custom made for the characters.

The monk is a streamlined fighter, i expect leather, chain mail for armor, light plate for gauntlets and leg armor.

Remember you got helms and shoulders, they both matter when it comes for the looks.

How is the itemization going to work? Since the attribute points are going to be spent automatically I'm assuming a monk can equip gothic plate..ect? Or is he limited to certain types of armor like leather and such?

Most likely, each character will be able to use certain things. Like the Barb will be able to use plate type gear like gothic and field armor, chain type gear like chain and scale armor, and leather like hard leather and studded armor. :/

Granted, thats just what I think and is not based off anything Blizzard said, so... Lol.
