I think there are some definition problems here Doppelganger; it's stylize yes, and a cartoon is stylized. but stylized doesn't mean it's cartoony.
Let's compare the abomination against the unburied:
here's a pic of the abomination:
here the unburied:
The proportions are similar, indeed, but here is what i observe:
first of all, the head(s) of the unburied, they themselves are not very much stylized (vell, they look evil), but the proportions are very human. the head of the abomination is very stylized: hugely different eye sizes, very flat chin, and the mouth is very broad.
also, the texture of the unburied is more 'fleshy' with more tones of pink and red, and more emphasized flesh parts. the abomination has just rather very obvious seams.
Both creatures are VERY similar to each other, that's out of question, but the 'diablo version' fits with the rest of the diablo 3 art style very well.
i think the greater problem is that we are aware of the wc3/wow abomination and it quickly comes to mind and we associate it with it. but i think such a creature design fits the diablo beastiary very well imo.
as for the peter lee pic, i think it's (new) tristram, the big building reminds me of the cathedral, it has even a hole in the roof from the meteor. those new buildings could be from the new settlers that tried their luck in tristram. man, it was done already in 2006 o.O
