Blizzard poster Bashiok has commented on the Battle.net forums about the game’s five classes, emphasizing on their diversity and uniqueness as characters, unlike those of many other games.

Quote

Yeah, I think you guys hit the nail.

We’re setting out to create unique, interesting, and diverse classes that each have their own style and flavor. Most importantly this isn’t just a basic look at each individual class, but how they compare to each other and overlap (or hopefully, don’t).

When you up the number of classes more and more you’re eventually going to begin down the route of homogenization, they start to bleed into each other’s core abilities and styles which really just detracts from each individual class’ recognizability and distinction within the game.

In addition, by limiting the number - and I say limiting not because it’s a low number, it’s the number of classes in Diablo II and a good one at that, but because we’re not going crazy with it - we can focus on making each class really impressive, both visually and through the way they each feel and play.

Exactly. Anyone played Baldur's Gate II. including subclasses there are almost 30 classes. ANd the sub classes don't different that much at all.

I don't mind 5 classes. We still don't know if they are going to make an expansion (and they might) which ands new classes. Considering Blizzard is pushing for 4 man teams in games, 5 classes is pretty good. sure it means you can't have one of each class in a game, hey, that's not good. I might want to have one of each class in a game!! But back to where I was earlier, 5 for the initial release is pretty good. Too many classes and the tend to overlap abit and it's a little boring, not enough and you get bored just as quick.

Lol, I made the exact same thread yesterday.

Anyway, as long as the classes are more unique and there's more class specific quests and interactions with NPCs, I'm in.

Just can't wait to know what the other 3 classes are.

I keep hearing and seeing people alluding to the Necromancer not making a return...
I hope this isn't true, but whatever.

Alot of people want a comeback of paladin and necromancer... That would kinda suck since there would be three characters that already were in D2. So I hope the other 3 classes are different, or have some similarities to a necro or paladin. We don't want another D2, we want D3 ^_^

Yeah something close, with a different name and different meaning. But not literally a paladin. We want some unique stuff.

giving him the name paladin would be lame but I would really like ( and I hope I'm not the only one) to get something close to it as you said :)

but he still has to be "all about light" and that kind of stuff :P:P

I think that a Knight or Templar class are highly likely. It would be weird not to have a heavily armored character in the game.

i still think the paladin would be a good character to continue on D3, the paladin in D2 was a pretty awesome class, and the bastard looked really cool in any armor :P

If they are going to go for a Paladin/Holy character, I like the names Templar or Avatar for the class. It doesn't and shouldn't be the class from D2.

One of those three remaining classes has to be a returning D2 class, hmmm but which one. I defiantly, defiantly wouldn't mind seeing a male assassin, totally revamped of course. That would be bad ass.

the paladins accepted females to the order, remember act 2, the chick that sold weapons and armors (dont remember the name), when you play as paladin she says she tried to be come a Paladin herself.

wizards and sorceress, are also a possibility, there was a wizard in D1 and a sorceress in D2, Amazon is a little harder, are there male Rogues on the lore? if its the case it would be nice to see the Rogue class coming back to diablo.
