Yeah, I think you guys hit the nail.
We’re setting out to create unique, interesting, and diverse classes that each have their own style and flavor. Most importantly this isn’t just a basic look at each individual class, but how they compare to each other and overlap (or hopefully, don’t).
When you up the number of classes more and more you’re eventually going to begin down the route of homogenization, they start to bleed into each other’s core abilities and styles which really just detracts from each individual class’ recognizability and distinction within the game.
In addition, by limiting the number - and I say limiting not because it’s a low number, it’s the number of classes in Diablo II and a good one at that, but because we’re not going crazy with it - we can focus on making each class really impressive, both visually and through the way they each feel and play.

Exactly. Anyone played Baldur's Gate II. including subclasses there are almost 30 classes. ANd the sub classes don't different that much at all.
I don't mind 5 classes. We still don't know if they are going to make an expansion (and they might) which ands new classes. Considering Blizzard is pushing for 4 man teams in games, 5 classes is pretty good. sure it means you can't have one of each class in a game, hey, that's not good. I might want to have one of each class in a game!! But back to where I was earlier, 5 for the initial release is pretty good. Too many classes and the tend to overlap abit and it's a little boring, not enough and you get bored just as quick.
-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

Anyway, as long as the classes are more unique and there's more class specific quests and interactions with NPCs, I'm in.
Just can't wait to know what the other 3 classes are.

Yeah something close, with a different name and different meaning. But not literally a paladin. We want some unique stuff.

giving him the name paladin would be lame but I would really like ( and I hope I'm not the only one) to get something close to it as you said :)
but he still has to be "all about light" and that kind of stuff :P:P

wizards and sorceress, are also a possibility, there was a wizard in D1 and a sorceress in D2, Amazon is a little harder, are there male Rogues on the lore? if its the case it would be nice to see the Rogue class coming back to diablo.
