Diablo III Lead Producer Keith Lee responded to criticism toward the Art Direction of Diablo III during a brief interview with MTV Multiplayer during the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals.  Who would have foreseen that in less than a week from the official announcement a Petition Online would have over 23,000 signatures of people who wish to express their disappointment toward how Diablo III artistic direction is being done.

Personally, I liked what I saw -- and I saw that demo right on my face on a HUGE screen at the event with plenty of detail. The outdoors naturally need to look sharp and colorful, while the dungeons have that dark ambience. There is also obviously a change of illumination between 2D and 3D environments.

Quote

Keith Lee -  One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for Diablo III is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in Lord of the Rings. Not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn't allow you to have a lot of contrast.

He continued: Diablo I and Diablo II are darker, and I think that the one of the main reasons why is the fact that in Diablo I, you're basically in a dungeon the whole time. And in contrast to Diablo III, you'll be exploring outdoors, you'll be in dungeons, you'll be experiencing so many different areas. We want to bring as much variety as we can when you're playing the game so that you're excited to check out new environments. We don't want everything to look the same and that's really what we're trying to aim for.
UPDATE: This quote was from the same day the game was announced, so it doesn't reflect much on the afterward fan response to the game. In short, he did not read the petition at that point.  However, for your knowledge, I submitted today the Diablo III Art Design Direction Survey thread to Bashiok (Diablo III Community Manager).  Your feedback was confirmed to have been received.

Said thread contains links to three of the online petitions.

I'm just a bit disappointed about the "wowish" style of D3. Hopefully they'll change that and if not, too bad. I'll play it till I drop anyway :)

same here, people overreacted alot to this, its too soon and they will probably change the lightning, and if they dont, they still have my money.

my problem was the exaggerated shoulder plates, but i doubt alot they will keep it like that anyway.

What is he talking about....... Did he read the petition? I bet no. Coz he didn't mention about anything else, just the colours, which suck.

Who is talking about what? That interview was during the WWI, that was long before any petition had been started.

of course they will. and imo, the way D3 looks now, from the gameplay video, im totaly ok with it.
plus, this is just the first show. where does it say that the game will end up like that when it's completely finished? think they will tune it up and render it at least a couple of dozen times before its totaly complete.
for me, that has 120 days played in WoW. cant say that D3 will look WOWish... that's total BS.

diablo3 textures - of few colours, cartoonish, smooth textured, polarized, not material enough!
diablo2 and diablo1 - little bit bumpy, crispy, everything feels as raw materials, grounds, walls.. even items in inventory looks realistic, bumpy, raw steel armors, bone shields...

and d3 inventory is a pure cruel joke - icons, childish icons.. the boss of gameplay is the size of the 3ground house, who easily brakes everything around himself ( the saw that in video ) and the boss hit slices only 1/10th the hp of warriors.. not realistic, cartoonish, for children.. to get more money.. shame on me, that i must tell this..
We need to hit 50000signations in petition or what? to make them aware they sux mixing franshises..mixing, experimenting..with wc3, wow, and d2..
many years ago, many games released - titan quest, sacred, and others...ordinary games ( mixed ideas from all games )

oh will you people come up with something new? All you say is that it's cartoony and childish which it isn't. d3 is like this and you'll just have to live with it....

Colors just fine for me. The texturing way is the main problem (even if people only notice it in a subconscious way), these painted textures which makes no use of normal mapping or specular highlights is what makes the game resemble WoW. But again, I love the colors.

Btw, these diffuse-only textures are only justifiable by technical requirements, but it just doesn't make sense for me in a game to be released one or more years from now.

I am honestly losing faith in blizzard and their games. They're like AMD - once on top but now going under with the way they are developing games. =[

Indeed, honestly don't see why people are so heavily averse to change.

In most interviews, they've clearly stated that there will be some gothic and grim areas. They just won't be everywhere like D2, so they can create a ncie contrast between areas and add some variation. Updating D2 to a 3d enviroment just really wouldn't work with the old style art direction, as it would need to look incredibly realistic or fall flat on its face.

Blizzard have always been about access over graphical power, to allow as many people as possible to play with a decent performance and Diablo 3 looks set to continue that.

I really hope they don't take such petitions seriously, all Blizzard learn from this is that there are 25,000 shallow people out there who think they can judge the outcome of a game by a 20 minute early video trailer of ACT1 areas.

They're developing amazing games, name me a game Blizzard have released in recent times that doesn't fullfil the main purpose of a game - to be fun?

If you play the game without rushing, you will be spending a lot of the time in the outdoors. Just think about Act II and III.

I do understand the rationale behind this decision--to make some areas look "normal" so they contrast to the really dark ones--but I just don't think it was necessary: we already know what the real world looks like!
