My suggestion would, just put out the banwave exactly a week before the season ends - they have all of their shit removed and wasted a good amount of time to get there.

I think a week before season ends is too late. In my opinion, the timing of this banwave was perfect. The season is going to last another 2-4 weeks, which should give legit players some time to finish gear/augments, gem upgrades, and farm a few hundred keys - and then go crazy on leaderboard pushes for the last week of the season. Those 2-4 weeks are probably not enough to get those botters back into endgame for the top of the leaderboards. Even if they're supported by their clans and we assume they start pushing GR90+ today and GR100+ by the end of this week, they still have to get all the augments and over 2000 rift keys to farm (1000 for paragon and gem levels and augments, 1000 for pushing). If we assume that the season is going to end in 2-3 weeks I think that's impossible using only legit means, and unlikely even when they were to start botting again.

I think the timeframe was exactly right (assuming that we'll see the end of season announcement this week). And of course, they need to do this every season to keep up the momentum and remind players that you should not cheat. Note that they didn't catch every cheater though - not at all. So not everyone's who's left is immediately "legit", though we need to accept the presumption of innocence for them.
