Build Statistics Perspective
On this week's Play Your Way build, Nevalistis referred to Lightning as an "unusual element" for Demon Hunters, which some players found a little weird given how popular the Meticulous Bolts build is these days. After being asked on reddit about it, she explained how sometimes seeing the big picture can lead you to having a different perspective on build statistics, and how Rankings kinda work as a magnifying glass on this issue. It's not perspective, it's literal fact. Of the top 5 DH on the leaderboards right now, all 5 are using Ball Lightning....The top players are what percentage of overall players? Even of just the leaderboards in general, the top 5 is less than 1%. Of the overall population of Demon Hunters, that number is even smaller.
Top players may be the most visible. That, however, does not mean they are the most prevalent. This is what I mean by differing perspectives. It's easy to forget the broader view when there's a magnifying glass like Leaderboards on top performers.
Armchair Rifting #1
Gaming Uploads started a series of what he calls Armchair Rifting. Most video and written guides usually tell you what items and a general idea of how a build plays out, and might even show some footage of that build in action, but not many of them give small insights on the creator's strategy on how to deal with specific affix combinations, when to fight or avoid an elite pack, how to position yourself depending on the situation. And that's what this series aims to do - real time tips on those.
Is it because it only shines with certain gear sets which the vast majority of players haven't collected? Is it because it's harder to play and thus only superior if you're a great player? Is it because it is effective but un-fun? Is it just because the unwashed masses are lolnoob?
I'd love to know (and not being much of a DH player myself, I'm pretty much completely ignorant of their build options).
My DH is on the top 100 right now. Nobody cares, Nobody's ever told me " Wow! That's awesome good job" in fact i was told once that i am a " no lifer " by some jelly idiot in a random MP game. ( Even tho i only play maybe 10-20 hours a week max ) Skill is a factor. Just because i change my top geared DH to the main builds in the leader board doesn't mean i am instantly going to solo GR 45+
Why? Because there's better players than me? Yes that's Obvious however its just a game to me. Not life it self. Don't need to be on Leader boards to prove your a great player and as for greater rifting. Any gem over level 25 is major overpowered and is going to let you roll over T6 for max rewards. My friend that plays has all his gems to level 35 and is perfectly happy with the power hes got. quite right i say.
As with the Lightning DH, gear is certainly a factor. The build requires a specific legendary in almost all slots
Boringness/Skill required to play, does usually NOT factor in. Many people love a bit more passive playstyle which the Marauder6 DH builds serve well. It is a long-range pet build in which you dont have to actively do anything. I am an avid mapper/modder and I learned this the hard way
Finally, it is a common thing, especially amongst casual players to critizie the meta and everybody who follows it. Amongst all the people I talked to, everybody except f*cking 1 was just outright jealous, mainly because of the fact they were not willilng to invest time and skill into the game like the top-players and then they blame it on the "stupid boring meta blabla". This can be observed in a lot of games in which you supposedly have a highly customizable charackter including Mechwarrior Online, Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, ArcheAge, and I bet there are many more.
