Confirmed: Season And Ladder Like System In First Major Content Patch In A Few Months

Josh Mosqueira just announced Season And a Ladder-Like System are coming in the first Major Content patch during the RoS Release Event!

  • This system will come out during the first major Content Patch (not first patch)
  • The devs are thinking about adding Seasons-only legendary items!
  • Wyatt Cheng announced  "Tiered Rifts"  where players are going to compete with each other in Adventure mode and be a part of Leaderboards.
  • Though they may not go back and add new affixes to old Legendaries that have none. The new ones they add with patches will have fun effects.

Seasons And Ladder-Like System
One of the features you guys have asked about a lot, that we have done a lot of research for, is something called
ladders. I'm happy to say that as part of our first big content patch in a couple of months, we will be releasing Seasons, which will include a ladder-like aspect to them. We're still working on them, but the general gist is that you'll level up a new character, we'll have specific ladders for Seasons, and also some goodies that will drop along the way. There's more information of that to come, and we're not making an announcement of when, but that's coming in the first major content patch - not the first patch, but the first major content patch.

Seasons-Exclusive Legendaries
There will be more legendary items in the future, both for rewards of Ladders, and also rewards from the Tiered Rifts. For the current ones, we probably are not going to revisit them. They all take time to do and I'd rather we were adding new legendary items, and the time is better spent on new legendary items than going back to refit old ones.

Tiered Rifts And Leaderboards
There is another major feature in the patch 2.1, which is going to be what we're internally calling tiered Rifts. The idea is a challenge scenario, where players do increasingly hard Rifts, to see who can get the farthest. You do your bounties, you do a Nephalem Rift. If you clear it, there's a chance to get a Greater Rift Token. If you successfully do that, you'll get a Greater Rift Key (rank 2), then Rank 3, etc.. Much like seasons, we're going to have a leaderboard as well, so you can see who got to the highest tier Rift, and what time were they able to obtain on that.

    Finally, some good news!!

I really like that they aren't too proud to let themselves be inspired by a certain other ARPG that blew up recently.

Both the Seasons and Season-only legendaries worked really well there, even though I think RoS' season will either be a little shorter (around

3 months) or way longer (half a year+, orienting at the length of a WoW Tier). Also like the Proving Ground"esque" Rift.

Before some idiot fanboy jumps on me, it's totally accepted and widespread (almost expected) in big gaming companies to adopt features that worked well in other games, also happened the other way around.

I swear by all that is unholy...

If they add tiered rifts I will sacrifice my first born child to Josh Mosqueira :p

Please do not tell me we have to lvl up every character again in every season! That was the worst part of Diablo 2, and not fun at all.
I hope I just misunderstood it.
The ladder system separated players, it was not good at all!

Indeed this is a good thing, if done adequately. I just love the new account-wide Badass RankParagon Level - seriously, it and smart drops are the two things that brought me back.

The "Tiered Rifts And Leaderboards"definitely sounds like the most interesting part out of all this. Alreadly looking forward to it! :)

I hope those exclusive Legendaries can't be brought into a casual game and only stay in Season games.

Think Ladders might work as they did in D2, Ladder characters cant play with normal characters. And since everything is BoA, having characters converted to normal after season end won't affect the game much. Would be pretty silly to get a Ladder Legendary and then have it deleted at season end in my opinion. Guess we will see.

I love the idea of tiered rifts, but hate the exclusivity that the ladder system implements.

Those of us who still wants to play D3, but have limited sparetime will never be able to find some of the cool ladder legendaries. Please at least make it so whenever a season ends, the ladder legendaries goes into the normal loot table.

Also it should be possible to let both ladder and non-ladder players play together since loot is personal.

All in all I think the ladder system should be seperate with leaderboards etc, but without letting the rest feel the love. IMHO dont make legends exclusive to ladder and make tiered rifts available for all and not just ladder

Absolutely dislike the idea of ladder-only legendaries. HUUUGE letdown for me. I absolutely don't want to be forced into resetting all my progress just to be able to get certain legendaries.

I agree with Bagstone. That was the part i disliked the most of D2's Ladders. If they go with that path, i hope that season specific legendaries will become avaiable for all as soon as the ladder resets.

Agreed. The ONE THING about ladders that I hated from D2 and they want to bring it back? God. Fucking. Dammit.

    WOW... This is so ORIGINAL.

I essentially see ladders as a punishment: either play without the paragon levels you spent so much time gaining, or give up the chance to get the best drops. The new paragon system is awesome. Why spoil it with ladder-only legendaries?

Don't want to start any drama. But while games that have blown up recently do have seasons and seasons specific items, the idea has been around for a while and was used a lot in Diablo 2.

Personally I have mixed feelings about Ladder specific legendaries... I didn't really get into Ladders in D2, mostly because I was like 12 and didn't understand wtf they were.

But I do see the point in having Ladder specific stuff. If There aren't perks for playing Ladder, why would you drop all the way back to Paragon 0 and start the grind again? There needs to be SOME small incentive and I think a couple of ladder only legendaries would do that. Nothing OP, nothing that will make Ladder chars flat out BETTER than non-ladder, just a little something, maybe XP gain related, to make playing Ladder worth it.

I absolutely agree. Honestly, this announcement takes some of the euphoria out of the great RoS launch.

If people need an incentive to use the system, then maybe it's just a bad idea?

Some type of xp boost or something like that wouldn't be a problem; but if you put something unique, even if its just a few legendaries, then it automatically becomes the ONLY way to play. Being forced to restart to stay competitive is not fun. It sucked in D2 and it will suck in D3.

All that's left that I want Blizzard to fix up so that I can come back is to introduce ladders and give us a public game system that wasn't designed for console.
