It looks like blizzard has cut around 600 employees today.

Over the past several years, the company has grown rapidly and evolved to better serve you and the rest of our global community. Thanks to all of your support, we continue to serve by far the biggest subscription-based MMO community, as well as the most passionate eSports and online gaming communities, in the world.
In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.
After evaluating our current organizational needs, we determined that while some areas of our business had been operating at the right levels and could benefit from further growth, other areas had become overstaffed. As a result, we need to scale down some of our departments and part with some of our colleagues and friends here at Blizzard. I know that you all understand how difficult this type of situation can be for anyone who might be affected, so I want to assure you that we'll be offering each impacted employee a severance package and other benefits.
I also want to emphasize that we remain committed to shipping multiple games this year, and that our development teams in particular remain largely unaffected by today's announcement. We're continuing to develop, iterate, and polish Blizzard DOTA, Diablo III, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, as well as other, unannounced projects. We'll have exciting news to share in the coming weeks regarding Diablo III's release date, and will soon be holding a private media event to showcase the latest work on Mists of Pandaria. It goes without saying that we're working hard to get all of these games in your hands as soon as possible.
You've all come to expect Blizzard to live up to our mission statement with every game, and deliver the most epic entertainment experiences ever. You can continue to expect that and nothing less from us as we move forward.

"Basic Attack" Is Still In
With patch 13 and the skill changes, a lot of people have noticed the removal of the "basic attack" once you switch out your skills. Lylirra stopped by the forums and gave us some more information on this ability.

In later builds, we're looking at having Basic Attack as an option under "Primary" in the skill UI, which will (by default) assign it to the left mouse button. Also, as many players have already noticed, your hero will default to Basic Attack if there aren't sufficient resources to power a given spell or ability.
Just so that there aren't any misunderstandings, we are still evaluating Basic Attack and haven't yet decided on a best course of action. It's our intent that there is a way to use Basic Attack, but our exact plans may change between now and launch, or even between now and whenever we next patch. This is where we're at currently, though.
Lylirra, will they be moving the elective mode checkbox to the Skill pane?
I don't know offhand, but I'll be happy to pass on the question (and the feedback).
What about the passives that generated resources? DH melee attack with a passive generated hatred which allow some melee builds, are these passives gone for good?
Passives that had a basic attack component were either removed (like Virtuoso) or have been redesigned to work with your hero's special abilities (for example, Thrill of the Hunt). We've no plans at this time to add the passives that were removed back into the game.

That said, I'm looking forward to playing (and killing) several Hardcore characters after I've tackled all the content on Normal. Given my penchant for dashing into the fray, though, I admit I'll be elated if I manage to survive past the Skeleton King. ( Blue Tracker / Official Forums )

Skill Unlocking
You get at least one skill, rune, or passive unlock every level, and for most of them (post level-13) you get three or four. ( source )
More Updates Before Release
We'll probably have a few updates we'll want to make sure we get public testing on. ( source )

What Are Your Favorite Two Classes
Bashiok has posted a poll up on the offical forums yesterday that will last for a few more hours. Make sure to take a look at what was voted the top two favorite classes!

Edit* Of course this is me spreading meaningless rumors, but still I'm scurred =O
He's still using the @bashiok twitter account, and most of the community managers we're all familiar with have posted at least once on the Blizzard forums today, so hopefully they're all still employed. I doubt anyone who is about to be or has been laid off would able to post on the official forums (you can imagine the carnage from a disguntled former employee). Still sucks though, I wish everyone who was laid off the best.
This is pretty bogus though. Especially with the great financials from last year.
I can understand a company not wanting to pay someone to do a job they don't need done, but it seems like they could have expanded and continued using and paying their loyal employees.
I dont know why hes an asshole as far as people go...This fuck has been causing so much hype over a game he knew wasnt coming out anytime soon why? because he gets payed to be a dick. He goes posting stupid bullshit on twitter than takes offence when we project release dates. Hes also the asshole that said that diablo players are all stupid and cant handle skill trees. So once again i post the comment i dont understand why youd be sad if some asshole forum moderator got fired
Times, how they do change... :|
Also, I've posted my thoughts about that Electric "Boogaloo" on the official thread.
I had a better grasp for doing builds with the barb and wizard, but had a harder time with the DH and WD because of the lack of apparent synergies in the skills.
I still saw later some good build with the WD, but it's less obvious than with the barb and wiz.
It's like I've always sad, video games are becoming increasingly expensive to make. No surprise at all Blizzard would let go of people. It's only natural.
As for basic attack...hooray! I'm gonna get on beta right now and use my Witch Doctor's dagger. Just cause I can! Take that, you fascists!
.... the opposite of truth...
just because you dont know how to use the harder to operate classes doesnt mean they have any lack of synergies. the WD has the MOST synergistic spells in the game and the highest build diversity. the DH is also up there as second most. the wizard and barb have the least, they are just the easiest to use by a large margin which is why they are so widely liked. i on the other hand like them the very least because of their "boringness" of being so easy
off the top of my head:
DH - 4-5 skills with rockets - passive with rockets. 3-4 grenade type runes w/ grenade passive - 2 discipline spells that regens hatred - spike traps caltrops sentry - 4-5 slow spells and increased dmg passive from slowed targets - 3-4 knife orriented skills
WD - jesus so many to name.... vermin passive - circle of life - gruesome feast - grave injustice - rush of essence - vision quest - tribal rites - spirit vessel - dude these are just a small handful of his passives that synergize directly with a few of his spells each. have you read ANY of his skills on the skill calc?
"OMG a passive which boost rockets!!! let's grab all the rocket skills!!!"
yeah... naming a few passive skills don't select the other skills for you.
If you build it like your rocket DH... lol
"Let's grab all the pets!!!" ^^;
But like I said, I saw some interesting, balanced, builds.
I would bet the call came from Activision to make the layoffs. Also, Layoffs have happened in EVERY industry, EVERY job sector, and continue to happen in this economy in this country and around the world.
I read the estimate of 4000 WoW support staff, and if you consider WoW alon has lost over 10% of its subscriptions, its a fair assessment that their support staff could be pared by 10%, to stay in line with previous revenues/demands. that is at least 400 of the jobs. If YOU ran the business, and continue to see losses in revenue in your main business line with no real good option to turn it around (WoW is old and dying a slow death), you have to sadly make the decision to let people go.
-ZTZaorish
huh? were talking about SYNERGIES. do you know what that word even means? it means when one skill compliments another skill. and i just named a shit load for both classes. please do yourself and everyone a huge favor and go read the skill calc and within seconds you'll realize the dozens of synergies with both classes.
since your sooooo lazy to even check. here's just some of them:
vermin - toads, bats, spiders, locsts. jungle fortitude/circle of life/zombie handler - garg/zdogs rush of essence - allspirit spells bad medicine - poison skills/runes (big stinker, psn dart, locusts, plague bats, spider queen, acid rain, zombie charger. Grave injustice - zwall, horrify, soul harvest, spirit walk, mass confusion, fettish army, BBVD also flows w/ short ranged spells like plague of toads/firebats tribal rites - fettish army, BBVD, hex spirit vessel - horrify, spirit walk, soul harvest gruesome feast - death is life, close range combat skills manitou - firebats/plague of toads/zombie charger
read read read read read readingggg rainbowwwwww.
