Only the Blacksmith is available in the beta but it doesn't mean we can't gather information through other means. Today I'll try to give you a small preview of what to expect from your friend the Jeweler! But before we start, the obvious and annoying disclaimer to cover my ass.
Disclaimer: This is NOT an official preview, this is mostly the result of datamining and it might not reflect what will be in the final game
The Jeweler is upgradable and can be found in town, just like the Blacksmith on the beta. He offers 3 different types of services:
- He will combine 3 identical gems to create a new higher quality gem.
- He will remove gems from an item, returning both the item and gems to you intact.
- He can also add a socket to an item.
The average amount of sockets on a high level item is around 2-3 depending on the item type but a couple of helms, shields, or weapons seem to have up to 4 possible sockets according to the game files.
Also, a lot of gems are already in the game files and it seems to be a good time to list them

they said you can socket end-game lvl gems into low lvl gear encouraging "twink gear". having a lvl 1 helm with +31% xp gain, then the rest of your gear gets +attack (helm is only thing that gets +to xp gain) so just dont put a red gem in your end game helm, its THAT simple. THINK before you complain
huh? what are you talking about? who said that only perfect gems will drop? that would be insanely stupid.
My problem with gems that hace crappy stats like ruby-helm is they could of put this crap on the enchanter, why the hell is it a gem effect? they could of gave us resistance or something similar, I'm by no means gonna say we should completely do away with some of the effects on some of those gems but i am saying they should be somewhere else.
you find a much better helm thats worth unsocketing and resocketing it? duh lol. if your sporting a lvl 1 helm and your lvl 20+ and you have the cash to unsocket, you will. its not that hard. enchantment is a equally good idea, too bad u dont work at blizzard. its FINE this way and fine your way. there really isnt an issue here except your whining just to whine like most impatient D3 fans. get over it and enjoy the game on release like everyone will. bitching over minor details that really arent bad to begin with is just sad. bitch over the unattuned rune system/nephlam alters because its the only thing in the game that is actually an issue with a lot of people.
http://www.diablowiki.net/Runestones
Again there could of been attack speed or movement speed, leech life. anything, but they chose this. i guess i know who they made it for
with the unatuned rune system currently in place itll take you many months to get the exact lvl 7 runes you want. also runes will have stats, we dont know what kinds yet. speculation is speculation buddy. game isnt finished and we dont have all the info, wait till release to cry about what needs to be added/taken away because NOTHING is final. beta is beta
Example, using Topaz's
Flawless Square Topaz - 19% Gold From Monsters
Perfect Square Topaz - 21% Gold From Monsters
Radiant Square Topaz - 23% Gold From Monsters
Star Topaz - 25% Gold From Monsters
Flawless Star Topaz - 27% Gold From Monsters
Perfect Star Topaz - 29% Gold From Monsters
Radiant Star Topaz - 31% Gold From Monsters
You'd rather have 3 Flawless Square Topza's socketed in a Helmet, giving you a total of 57% extra gold, rather than getting 21% extra gold by combining them. Until you get to such a point that you want the extra slot for, say, 10% life, if you are just going to farm (or be a fourth player in a game who is farming) then you need 5 of a gem grade to level it up and not lose any benefits.
It's probably just for the extreme min-maxers, and you'd be surprised how many of them are out there that need to squeeze every last point from everything they possibly can. They'll be the ones going for the highest levels.
yeah sure buddy, sure, buddy sure. good 1.
Runs won't have stats.
you need to go watch the jay wilson interviews as he talks about the system with stats. DER
I know there is probably a topic somewhere on this site but I'll ask anyways =]
Nowhere has anyone said that they will contain stats. He was giving examples of what they could do, not what they will do.
