Force recently posted up the second part of his Diablo Lore series. In part two, he takes us through the events and explains the back story of Diablo I, which follows the Warrior, Aidan, son of King Leoric. Those of you that need to catch up on the lore of Sanctuary in preparation for Diablo III, it is highly recommended that you check out this video as well as part one.
You stated that Diablo's soulstone was smashed in the beginning, then later say the warrior who defeated him plunges it into his head after defeating him. Am I missing something or does that not make any sense?
so what happened to prince albrecht??? Did diablo take over his body in the catacombs, then hes later killed by his older brother?? not so clear about this.

Like Daemaro yes, this is what happened. After being contained in the soulstone, Diablo needs a body (presumably only human?) to manifest himself in this plane. Once fully possessing the body, the only way to get him to leave is to kill the body. However, as Diablo had changed Albrecht's body into his own by this point, that was not really revealed till after his death.

I just so happen to have the Diablo 1 and 2 manuals with me (good lord, Blizzard made some awesome manuals at one point, didn't they? The BS that shipped with SC2 was such a disappointment), and the D1 (and D2) manual does say the soulstone was shattered. That said, we do know from D2 that a smaller portion of a soulstone, along with a human, can contain one of the three. Additionally, Mephisto had his soulstone shattered as well (by Que-Hegan, I think). He then had someone (again, I think Que-Hegan) drive the largest piece into his head, and then Mephisto possessed that person. So...it appears that the full soulstone could mostly contain a prime evil, and shattering it allowed them freedom. However, they still need a body to possess, and it seems that they either need or prefer to use a remaining piece of the soulstone as a conduit to possess the body. Anyway, that was what was driven into the warriors head, a piece of the original soulstone.

That's probably because they just added that bit of lore in D3.
But yeah it's official now the Warrior from D1/The Dark Wanderer is King Leorics eldest son.
Yes. That's exactly what happened.
