Bashiok on Rushing in Diablo III

Bashiok chimed in on a few discussions today, one of which was about rushing characters through content and levels in DiabloWiki.com - Diablo III

For most people there are two forms of "rushing". One is essentially playing on bugs to skip content that isn't intended to be skip-able. The other is either using your previously acquired wealth to twink a new character, and/or have a high level character help run you through the content.

Rushing through use of unintended mechanics or bugs to skip content is not something we'll support, of course, and ideally we'll fix any such issues should they crop up.

Outfitting a new character with better items and having a friend with a high level character rush you through content, we're totally fine with. While, yes, we could be sentimental and hope that you're really interesting in experiencing the content at the pace and balance we worked hard to achieve, having a friend rush you through content is a positive social experience. Having them help you hit a level where you're both able to tackle content that's relevant creates a positive social experience. Regardless of the intended pace, it's co-operative play, and that's not bad.

Although most of us probably agree that ideally, you'd repeatedly go through all the content and enjoy it every time. However, from our repeated experiences in DiabloWiki.com - Diablo II

Diablo II and other games, the reality is that after the first few times you'll probably wish there was a faster way to do things. As such, having higher level characters run new characters through content, which was extremely common in Diablo II, will still be an option in Diablo III. Considering how many characters I plan on making, I, for one, am thankful for this realistic approach to rushing.

I think that'll basically just make it so that the lower level character, and not the higher level character, is who determines the speed of the rushing. Which isn't a bad thing at all IMO, seeing as it'll make it so a rush has to go through more content. Also, from what we've heard waypoints will be more common and will be in set places in outside areas. So it'll slow down rushing, but it will still be faster than going through yourself.

Definitely, but it'll still make it so much easier if you have a level 60 in a level 20 area. While you're rushing you could also just run straight from area to area instead of fighting a lot of stuff along the way. But you wont be completely skipping content every time, which IMO is good.

You two have discussed it thoroughly enough in those few posts, i see no way to abuse rushing like it was in D2 with the exclusion of tp's.

I'm glad to hear this, it would be silly if they didn't allow your previous characters help out with new characters.

Yea good point. In the end, stuff like this will promote character creation, which is a good thing for replayability.

There will come a time where you're going to play through the game so many times that you're going to be just sick of doing it. I think there should be a way to skip things, but there should be a better PvM system in Diablo 3. I want to actually be able to go through it without having some guy giving us the waypoint. I really miss entering the portals that go to Hell in Act 5 in Diablo 2. I hope that the PvM experience is a long and good one.

Though I personally never ever rush in Diablo or any other RPG for that matter (RTS is something else :whistling: ) I think it's nice that they are not entirely against it. If people eventually grow sick of playing through the game, I'd personally prefer them to just take a break from it and come back when it becomes fun again, but if they'd rather rush it, it's good to have the option. But eventually, I think there will be some kind of a fan made character editor that will make rushes unnecessary anyway.

Well especially if they make the end game enticing enough, it would be a lot of fun to have a large amounts of characters that are high levels, and that simply wouldn't be possible for a lot of people without rushing. I know that I would probably only be able to stick with a select few characters if going through the game was a huge process each time. It would just end up making it so that I don't get to see the full potential of a lot of the characters.

Well at least for me I ususally don't rush a character through everything but I'll take advantage of a friend's help if they're on a high level character when I'm leveling. And if you've gone through the game on a few characters already you won't be missing out on much. But yes, the actual act of rushing can be pretty boring, but IMO its not as bad as getting to level 60 the 5th time by yourself.

I never used rushing. I feel that the play through of the game is the fun part. Once I was high level, that is when the game got boring for me. I still won't rush in D3.

I think I'll probably go through the game once with each character without rushing, and then do others with a mix of being rushed through some areas I don't like or something. I'm basically open to it but I don't want it to be the only way I go through content after the first time.

There's only so many times you can go through the game without it turning into a borefest. Making rushing longer, or just annoying is just gonna piss people off. Not really enough to go on though guess we'll see when it gets released.
