New Blizzard Trademark

A recent article on ShackNews has revealed that Blizzard has filed claims to a new trademark in the name of Cataclysm:

UPDATE-

It is also becoming increasingly possible, more so, even, that this new trademark is the name of the anticipated up-coming World of Warcraft expansion. More details on that here.

I doubt its the new MMO, more likely its the expansion for WoW, as the Cataclysm is another name for the Great Sundering, the event that created the Maelstrom in the middle of the ocean in the Warcraft universe. So unless they're naming their new game after an event in Warcraft, my money's on a WoW expansion that takes place in the Maelstrom.

An interesting article has been posted on MMO-Champion(A primarly World Of Warcraft site). Anyways being a huge lore fanatic of WoW I can see alot of whats being said in this article making sence, if this is true I am personaly expecting Blizzard to announce the next WoW expantion at Blizzcon.

A few days ago Blizzard filed a trademark for "Cataclysm" on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website. Cataclysm was registered for :

So ... What does it mean? Well, Wrath of the Lich King was trademarked a few weeks before the Blizzcon, we're not going to jump to conclusions here but WoWWiki will most likely give you a few things to think about on their Great Sundering article.

The Great Sundering, also known as simply the Sundering or the Cataclysm was a world event which reshaped Azeroth approximately 10,000 years ago at the end of the War of the Ancients. This event was triggered due to the Well of Eternity being destroyed.

Prior to the Sundering, there was only one continent on Azeroth, referred to as Kalimdor. In the catastrophic explosion, eighty percent of the land mass was destroyed leaving behind the major continents and scattered islands that are known today: Northrend, Kezan, the Eastern Kingdoms, and the remnant still referred to as Kalimdor.

The site of the Well of Eternity became a swirling vortex of power known as the Maelstrom.

A few days ago, one of our user also spotted a test server named "Maelstrom 3 Test" in the US server list (it only showed up for a few seconds, see This post). If the expansion is indeed The Maelstrom/Cataclysm, we can expect to see a few things here:

Sargeras and/or Deathwing
Azshara
Goblins!

Yup, I believe it's definetely the name of the new WoW x-pac. The maelstrom is one of the most talked about zones in WoW, so I can definitely believe it'll be the main focus of the upcoming expansion.

It has one announced unknown title and one speculated title that has not yet been confirmed, so, if we're to go by facts, no, only one unknown title, although, admittedly, it is likely there are two.

You should update your news feed. This is most definitely in reference to the next WoW expansion which will deal with the Maelstrom, known to be caused by something described as a Cataclysm.

While it could definitely be the next WoW expansion, since it is related to the Maelstrom in Warcraft Lore, Blizzard also has a track record of throwing us for a loop on such things.

Icecrown Citadel raid has not even been announced yet for the current WoW expansion. You know, the one with Arthas? The whole point of Wrath. It's a little early to release info on the next expansion, even if it is a month away at Blizzcon.

For gods sake it is NOT a new WoW expansion! The nomenclature for the WoW expansions is very strictly tied to the lore that is being expanded upon, and we already know where the next three WoW expansions will be taking place and roughly what they are about.

You really should read first.

The Great Sundering was when the Well of Eternity imploded in the center of the world to create the Maelstrom. This event was also known as THE GREAT CATACLYSM.

I'm assuming you're expecting the expansion to be called The Maelstrom. It should be noted that the current expansion is not called The Northrend.

Definitely the WoW expansion. They must be beginning work on it.

There is still one major area in the wow unexplored.. The Maelstorm, Well of Eternity islands and the great vortex in the middle of the map between kalimdor and eastern kingdoms.
