Bestiary Update: The Unburied! Plus, New Concept Art & Screenshots.

All kinds of new Diablo 3 goodies for you today! First and foremost, Blizzard has updated the Bestiary with a new creature: The Unburied! This nasty behemoth is apparently compromised of rotting corpse parts, disfigured heads, horns, sugar and spice. Ok, well maybe not those last two. See for yourself...
"Something is dreadfully wrong. Fear is in the air; I can feel it. I was but days out of Tristram when I saw a screaming ball of flame rip across the sky. Surely enough, soon after witnessing this harbinger of doom, I stumbled upon a badly mangled traveler. He was barely able to spit out the tale of the cursed monstrosity responsible for his broken body as his life drifted away. He called his killer "the unburied"." ... "Being born out of pits of human misery, these beings feed on human suffering. Wherever bodies are dumped together unceremoniously, the unburied may rise."
In other words, if you run into this big fella, don't expect him to hold your hand for a nice romantic walk in the park. Blizzard has also put up another nice media update with new concept art and screenshots, both of which feature the unburied among other things. Take a look and click on any of the images below to see the full high-res versions!

Concept Art (3 new images):

The Bone Reaver.

Wow. Another beautiful piece by Peter Lee.

The Unburied.

Screenshots (9 new images):

Alright, there's obviously plenty to digest today (and by the looks of the unburied, he's been digesting quite a bit as well). So what are your thoughts on all of the latest pieces of concept art, screenshots, and The Unburied? That one piece of concept art by Peter Lee is nothing short of amazing if you ask me. Also, judging by the concept art, I think I also want a Bone Reaver for a pet.

(thanks minsc&boo and Thasador)

Yeehaw, at long last, at least something new! Thanks!

Ok, I'd say the Unburied is the Diablo version of the WarCraft Abomination, eh? I like it :) .

At first I thought "great more pictures of act 1" but then I opened them all up in high res and well... I'm amazed! I love the more gory elements being shown such as screen shot 77 with the guy being blown apart - limbs flying everywhere. And screen shot 80 with the human skulls resting on the side on a blood stained alter of some sort. The maps are looking really good, lots of depth in them and great use of colour. I've been playing Diablo + diablo2 recently and this update has really got me excited about diablo3 again, even though it is just a small update. I can't wait until they show more areas of the game such as the other acts.

The concept art pictures are also great. Shame the Peter lee picture isnt a higher rez :(

I'm gonna beat the dead horse again, the unburied looks frighteningly cartoony if you ask me. I was hoping to see some Diablo hell spawn instead of those Warcraftian undead.
That Peter Lee art piece is strange, am i seeing a ghost town, literally?

i like the new monster. maybe he looks like warcraft. but i dont play so i dont know. i know that he is very wicked looking. all those faces and stuff. looks like a bad ass.

now to talk about the peter lee picture. near the middle right of the picture you kinda see a circle in the ground. to me it looks like a defensive place. that big building looks wierd though too. im guessing there was a king who lived there.

    Wow awesome

I wanna pop that chest now. Something i hope D3 will have, namely guaranteed "good" drops from (rare) chests.

I think there are some definition problems here Doppelganger; it's stylize yes, and a cartoon is stylized. but stylized doesn't mean it's cartoony.

Let's compare the abomination against the unburied:

here's a pic of the abomination:

    here the unburied:

The proportions are similar, indeed, but here is what i observe:

first of all, the head(s) of the unburied, they themselves are not very much stylized (vell, they look evil), but the proportions are very human. the head of the abomination is very stylized: hugely different eye sizes, very flat chin, and the mouth is very broad.

also, the texture of the unburied is more 'fleshy' with more tones of pink and red, and more emphasized flesh parts. the abomination has just rather very obvious seams.

Both creatures are VERY similar to each other, that's out of question, but the 'diablo version' fits with the rest of the diablo 3 art style very well.

i think the greater problem is that we are aware of the wc3/wow abomination and it quickly comes to mind and we associate it with it. but i think such a creature design fits the diablo beastiary very well imo.

as for the peter lee pic, i think it's (new) tristram, the big building reminds me of the cathedral, it has even a hole in the roof from the meteor. those new buildings could be from the new settlers that tried their luck in tristram. man, it was done already in 2006 o.O

I'm sure if the abomination would've been made with the current D3 engine, it would've been very close to what the unburied looks like. And no, i wasn't really specifically aware of the WC3/WOW abomination (thanks for pointing it out though, the resemblance is quite uncanny), what i am aware about is that the unburied would fit well into a Warcraft based game, but doesn't strike me as being very Diabolical. I guess its exactly due to it being stylized. (therefor "cartoony", as in, its stylized as if it would be a cartoon, literally)

In my opinion, the Unburied blows WoW's Abomination out of the water. It's way more creepy and terrifying. I'm most certainly going to keep my distance when I first run into one of those monstrosities :)

I also found the picture of the Bone Reaver to be very entertaining. It's something I would expect in a Diablo game.

I love the screeenshots too... Hell, I love it all.

Keep up the good work, Blizz :)

I don't know if this has been mentioned ever before, or seen. But did you notice the Familiars in screenshot 82? I at least hope those are familiars, not those stupid D2 bats. Man, I hated the Familiars, they were annoying :D but that's why they were great :)
  • #11 Doppelganger
You can see them in action in this thread if i'm not mistaken.

Yes its similar to this picture (also 2006, new tristram)

Couldn't have said it better, CapCosmaty. As for the artwork, that's not Tristram is it? I don't see a well and stuff, and if that's the church then there should be a bunch of rocks/mountains (and the entrance to the Caves) near the viewpoint, but there are houses there instead.

On the other hand, it does have a hole in the roof and it looks exactly like the church from the cinematic... And if you look closely, you can even see a house near where Adria's shack was in D1 (although it looks to be made of stone, not wood).

So wtf happened to the mountains that used to be there? And there should be trees at the right side (although they could have been cut in 20 years). And is that a hill fort in the distance (at kinda like where the hive was in D1:Hellfire)?

Good lord. That thing almost gave me hives when I looked at it. Unreal. What a fantastic update though. This is the sort of update I've really been hoping for.

And you find this very "Diabolical", then?

Seriously, I don't see what obvious similarities there could be between the Uburried and the Abomination except that both are Undead giants of sorts, one has three arms and the other has multiple heads. One has one head and other has two arms. Yes.... I could see how this could be confusing..... To a complete idiot.

Well, this is quite a nice update considering we've gotten next to nothing for so long. The artwork as always looks awesome and I agree that the town could be new Trist; that would be cool. As for the screens and the unburied; nice to see a new addition to the bestiary and even to those bashing him, I think he looks damn good and evil. The screens are looking better every time, I like the barb shield in the first one....hopefully they will throw little tidbits like that in more screens next time. I'm pleased.
  • #17 Doppelganger
Typical Dimebog rite thar. Please redirect me to that elusive non-existent post of mine where i explain in great detail why i find the Thorned Hulk to be the monster typifying the "Diablo feel", or why not redirect me to where i'm in awe of how "Diabolical" a swarm is? Oh whoops, i forgot, you are made out of BS assumptions and non-arguments aren't you?

Also yeah, the one has ansjofish and the other has pineapple, i don't understand why they can both be called "a pizza"? Halp someone, i'm an idiot.
  • #18 Dimebog
So why did you rush to this thread to tell us how you think that the monster is incredibly WoWish just because it doesn't 'tipify the Diablo feel'? Does every monster need to 'tipify the Diablo feel'? Or does everything you see including yourself in the mirror remind you of WoW and this forum is just a collateral damage to your illness? Would be nice to get to the bottom of that some day.
  • #19 Siaynoq
    It's not diabolical you're thinking. It's diabloical.

This monster seems pretty extreme. I'm sure Blizzard will be pushing the envelope a bit with some of its new monster concepts. But I doubt many others are this extreme.
  • #20 Genesis
I like the new monster, but I think there should be less of them in groups. Like the fat grotesques which explode into Lamprey or the big demons which are summoned by the cultist. There is only one of those at a time, not 8 or so of them in a single mob
Or if they're going to have lots of them all in 1 area, at least have a few different variations of the model, a few smaller ones and bigger ones, ones with heads in different places etc

Aside from that, I like it. I think it fits into Sanctuary just fine

P.S - They shouldn't have that cloth down below... Thats lame. His genital area should be covered by a roll of fat
