Jeffrey Kaplan Moving to NEW unannounced MMO

Jeffrey Kaplan one of the lead designers of World of Warcraft is moving on to work on the new "Unannounced" MMO.

I wanted to take a moment to let the community know that I?ve switched roles here at Blizzard to work on our upcoming, unannounced MMO. World of Warcraft has been such a central part of my life these past six and a half years, and it?s success would not have been possible without the tremendous community around it, so I wanted to say thank you to all our players who?ve shared this amazing experience with us so far. Also, while I have served as the spokesperson and Game Director for World of Warcraft on Wrath of the Lich King, by no means would WoW be where it is today without the dedicated team that we have in place. The WoW development team is comprised of some of the most talented and experienced game developers in the world, and it was an absolute honor to serve amongst them, and they will continue to make WoW better than ever. I still plan to be very involved with the future course of World of Warcraft, but will leave the day to day operations of World of Warcraft to my partners in crime, Tom Chilton and J. Allen Brack.

When all is said and done, WoW is still my favorite game. I play it every day. None of that passion is gone. If anything, it fuels the challenge of making our next MMO even better. We know we have some big shoes to fill. So thank you to everyone who has been so supportive over the years, and likewise, thanks to those who have given us pointed feedback on all areas of the game. Without all of the feedback and participation, WoW would not be the game that it has grown to be. Azeroth truly belongs to you and we?re lucky to have shared in your journey. And as always, I?ll still be lurking on the forums and in the game.
Mostly, I just wanted to say thanks. It has been an absolute honor.

Jeffrey Kaplan

So is anybody else wondering if Blizzard's next MMO will be based on the Diablo series?

Purely conjecture on my part, but I could see a Starcraft MMO before a Diablo one.

i doubt it myself. i think it sounds great to my ears. but i think that with diablo 3 still in progress i dont see why they would start another diablo game when another one is still in production. it just doesnt make sense. now if diablo 3 becomes releseaed and they still have it as unanounced. then i would say that i hope its mmo diablo. but at this point and time. i am going to doubt it.

That's what I think as well. More logical on Blizzard's part.

i doubt it would be world of diablo, but i would sure like to see it to where u can be an angel a demon or a nephelam that would be awesome and each fighting for their cause

If it was Diablo styled, it would be sick. But I still stand by my idea of World of Starcraft.

both world of diablo and world of starcraft seem unneeded since both games are still in production. only of that MMO if going to be release in 5-6 years or something. I think that when they talked about it before thay said that it is something new. I'd like that the most.

Cool ,thanks for the update! :)
I think it would be pretty cool to have a Diablo MMO :D
But wouldn't make sense to develop 2 Diablo games at the same time ,eh?

The new MMO will be WoW 2 no doupt about that. So why they switch one lead designer in the first place for new game? Cuz it's not even a "new" game...

Diablo MMO would be great, but it only has humans as playable characters so big no and D3 coming its way also big no.
Starcraft game coming prolly this year so I don't see much anything else possible than WoW2 unless its The Lost Vikings MMO which I greatly doupt also.

and why can't they release the expansions instead of WoW 2? they only had 2 of them...

    Ok, here my view:

The arguments that because SC and D3 are currently in production and thus it's not logical to produce world of diablo or world of starcraft don't hold. when they were developing warcraft iii and tft back then they were also developing wow.

and yeah, i rather see a starcraft mmo than a diablo one. two fantasy set-mmo games? would seem rather strange to me, they would cannibalize themselves because they would hit the wow target group (i don't mean the die hard diablo fans - i would probably play both)... besides, they say it's an mmo, not an mmorpg (although kaplan said that they had some big shoes to fill so it might be another mmorpg after all). and i could see a starcraft mmo coming. in the sc2 games they set the story up (like w3 and tft did) and then there we go.

frankly, i hope it'll be something new, but knowing blizzard, i don't think so.

definitely not wow2, just read kaplans statement again. besides, they plan additional expansions for wow and why would they try to hit those 11 million players and make them switch? i'd rather try to broaden the target audience. a percentage of people switching is inevitable, but from the economic point it would be the smartest thing to do.

It's highly likely that it's a new IP, but a SC MMO is also possible. I'd totally play as Protoss... mmm, psi-blades...

A Diablo MMORPG is an oxymoron

My money is either on a new franchize that will have to catch on pretty fast, to work out, or on something Starcraft based. Knowing Blizzard, and how they always play it safe with big projects it almost makes me think they wouldnt risk basing their "next generation" mmo on a new franchize, but you never know.
Another thing to keep in mind is that WoW will still be running for quite some time, and making anything that involves spells flying, swords and midevil looking castles would cut wows player population, so... my money is for something entierly diffrent, maybe with a futuristic setting. I cant argue that once again - Starcraft comes to mind.

the medieval setting has been over abused in MMOs and hasn't really worked out well yet so chances are low that Blizzard's next gen MMO will be a Diablo based one. A new IP is what I'm hoping for, but like it was mentioned above, Blizzard don't like gambling, so chances are low for a new IP as well. Making a Star Craft MMO makes a sense more so than anything else. I mean, knowing Blizzard, they didn't split SC II into a trilogy for no reason. they probably wanted to keep the game hyped and very alive as well as try to attract as many people as possible, keeping the game fresh for at least 3 years, when Bam! by the 4th year they'll probably have that MMO released... but then again, I could be wrong because I can't see WotLK keeping WoW alive for 4 years. not to mention the fact that they're already starting to bring the new MMO to media attention.

I personally hope for something new. As stated, I also believe WoW 2, or a Diablo or Starcraft MMO makes no sense. The latter two because they are already making games based on them. Either way it would seem wierd to start a new project in any of those themes before their current projects are done. Therefore my guess is it's something new. Even Blizzard can't make a living from three different themes forever, right? (Might sound arrogant to say, since they're basically one of the most successful companies in the game industry ever, but whatever).

wtf not another god damned mmo for the love of god.... why blizzard why
  • #17 Atrumentis
Yeah, Starcraft is much more likely. I hope they don't just purely copy WoW's set out though (like with 8 classes and two factions), hopefully they can come up with something at least a little different. Possibly something akin to Starcraft Ghost.

But I dunno about a whole new franchise.... I guess its possible, but Blizzard likes to perfect and build on things they already have.

If it is a new franchise, I hope its some sort of apocalyptic modern day setting. I'm not sure why... its just what I feel like.

It will not be WoW 2. I assure you.
I am confident it will be a FPS Styled MMO set in a brand new universe.

I doubt it's either Diablo and Starcraft. Blizzard being the cash mongers we so dearly love, they're probably coming up with a fresh new title. Think about it. The majority of Diablo fans hate WoW and don't play it. That's a loss for Blizzard. The majority of WoW fans as well, hate Diablo. Another loss for Blizzard. A lot of WoW and Diablo fans don't like Starcraft. Again, a loss. Bring a fourth title..a neutral one, and bring everyone together, earning craploads of cash. Seems like a more acceptable concept to me, really.
