Diablo III Release "still a long way to go"

In a recent interview with the Wired blog, VP Rob Pardo revealed some of the following details about Diablo III's release date and the state of its development.

"I don't know how far out it is, but it's still fairly early in development. I think when people see it, it feels so polished and so finished, but the reality is we have a very small portion of the game done right now," Pardo explained.

He added: "A lot of the way we develop is: We wanna make sure the game is really fun and the visual fidelity we want ... we wanna make sure we have a small area that feels really done so we know what to build. So even though it looks really complete a lot of the content is just not there. We have a long ways to go to build each of the different acts in the game and put in all the quests and all the different monsters. We have a lot of development ahead of us before it will be something ... It will definitely be out after StarCraft II."

It looks like we'll be waiting for Diablo III for awhile yet. Let's just pray that Starcraft II comes out within the next few months.

Thanks gyrextt for spotting this in an interview I'd read but kinda skimmed over.

    damn !

I so hope for this Christmas ....
    this is just anoing ...
If they release it too late - it will be hard to predict fans - who will stick at the moment to one or another online free 4 play game :/
I so hoped for full of players b.net - as long before it was :/

This was kinda to be expected, a release this christmas was impossible. Though i really can't wait for it ^^ but hey, then they can like do a big thing like: after a decade of silence, diablo rises again!!! :P or somefin ^^

Yup, don't think this information - new or old - should be surprising. I'd give Blizzard a whole lot more time if I knew the finished product would be a patiently-and-neatly-handcrafted-courtesy-of-Blizzard kind of product.

Plus, gives me time to save up for a monster pc; the 'thing' I have now...lol. I'm just not gonna play D3 with lowered graphics settings.

annoying like hell.. but was to be expected. Im still rooting for christmass '09. :( (eventhough even that date seems a bit to hopefull)

The game has been in development for 3 years (more if we consider the art dated from 2003, and more again if we took the version bnorth began working on).
And now, blizz is telling us the game is still in early stage.
Jay "WoW" Wilson, who obviously never played d2/lod on bn more than 2 weeks and is only interested in pvm (pve), is still saying they are unsure about how they will implement some gameplay mechanims...
The game engine is nearly outdated already (not that I care, I have been playing d2c/lod for nearly 8 years) but if they keep on taking their sweet time, the game's graphic engine will be quite out of place (2010?).

    I just don't get it :(

@ pwet, you're right about the early artwork from 2003, but i seem to remember an interview where blizzard said they did start on dia3 a long time ago, but through in the trash can and started again from scratch because their first try at dia3 'wasn't good enough'. So my guess is that have not been working on this version for that long.

That's not news, that's just saying the obvious. I could tell you this... it doesn't take a dev to realize that there's alot more work/testing to do. You guys were just being waaaay too optimistic. "This year!" "This christmas!" "This halloween!".... pfffff

That's why someone with authority had to come and burst your bubble.

Still the game has been in prod for 3 years now... that's not 6 months T_T
Blizzard don't owe me anything so why should they bother telling me how far the game development really is?
The game is being released after the first sc2 game, not much of a hint there :(
Still hoping for a late 2009 release.

i think they ar efooling us ... and i think D3 is at least so advanced as Sc2 but they need to get Sc2 out first then D3 . And they will not get out both games cose they wont make much profit and there cant be 2 games of the year :D:D
Sc2 will get out this Xmas or early 2009 and D3 i hope early 2010. At least this is how i see things :D
