Diablo 3 Item Grace Period & Alt Key

Bashiok shared a bit of info about the visuals and mechanics behind looting items. It is a change from the norm in Diablo II. You will still need to press down the Alt key to see all loot within the screen, but loot title will be displayed the moment it drops and fade after five seconds. If find this quiet helpful. Sometimes in Diablo II, something would drop, and you wouldn't notice. Specially when using AOE spells that kill mobs far away, while you are still killing mobs closer to you. It is easy to miss something that drops unless you hit the alt key.

Visually alerting you of items that drop anywhere onscreen, is a very welcome feature.
The way it works now is that when an item drops the name shows for about 5 seconds and then they fade out and disappear. Pressing Alt shows all dropped item names for again about 5 seconds and then the names fade out and disappear.

I actually didn't like it at first, I liked the on/off state of pressing or not pressing Alt, but with the names showing immediately after drop and having a sort of "grace period" after just tapping Alt, it's really grown on me and is a lot more intuitive. It's a lot easier to see what just dropped quickly and decide if you care, and it isn't necessary to constantly hold down Alt while scavenging after a large fight.

I still want to see -nopickup return but I haven't really asked anyone what the possibility of that is. I don't think it would work well with the current system, so options may have to be a possibility.

I'm confused, we can only see the dropped items' names once by pressing alt, or will the names be shown for 5 secs each time we press alt?

if it is the second then it is a much welcome addition, other wise this is going to be frustrating.

Pressing Alt shows all dropped item names for again about 5 seconds and then the names fade out and disappear

Some spelling mistakes... but who am i to say.. my grammer is shiet! lol.. but anyways i guess its a decent feature..

I always played with alt pushing down at all times anyways. So what happens now then? Do the item names appear for 5 seconds then disappear and reappear again if i just continue to hold down alt?

wtf?? this is gunna even be worse? i dont see how this will help us. Press alt, and in 5 seconds all the item names will disappear for good?.
  • #5 NFND
no. they wont disappear for good. you just have to hold alt again...
  • #6 Doppelganger
I'm pretty sure it isn't "disappearing for good", that would be kinda really stupid.
But i'm still wondering wether names still disappear even if you keep holding alt down though. I can imagine it being annoying to repress alt every 5 secs if you have a lot of stuff on the ground, or if you backtrack a bit, or whatever.

You guys are morons. Obviously none of you have eyes cause you can't read.

When they first drop, the names are visible for the first 5 seconds they're on the floor. When you want to see the name again, you can press alt, holding it will extend the time, but tapping it will cause the names to show for 5 seconds and then fade out until you press alt again.
  • #8 Doppelganger
Nope, no where does it say that holding down alt extends the time, you just made that up mister.

Heh? I don't have to prove fucking anything.
You claim to read something that isn't there, well prove me it is there or shut the fuck up.

Oh so since Bashiok didn't mention it, it automatically means it doesn't exist? Good logic.

Link me to where i say it doesn't exist.
You called us morons for not being able to read, well link me to what we supposedly weren't able to read or shut the fuck up.

Hmm... are you people just acting stupid or you really didn't understand that?

When an item drops, its name lasts for 5 seconds before fading away.
When pressing Alt (NOT holding), the 5 seconds + fade away feature will 'replay' on ALL items in the screen.
Need more time than 5 seconds? Press Alt again... it's still better than keeping your thumb on Alt 100% of the time.

I'm sick of people with reactions like:

    Translation:
"I don't understand anything so I twist and deform the news instead of reading carefully and trying to understand, then say it's gonna be worse than ever because it's not exactly the same as Diablo 2. Booo!!"

EDIT: What Septar said about the 'Holding Alt' feature doesn't show in the news (although it is logic that the feature exist), but since it wasn't confirmed, we can argue about it all day. Everything else he said was true and confirmed by the news.

pressing alt every 5 seconds would be more damaging to your joints than holding it.

Bah... I dunno. The people in Blizzard are currently playing and testing it (we - do not) :/ so if they say it's more comfortable, I believe them.

I'm not arguing anything. I asked the question, he called us (me) a moron for not being able to read, that is not being able to read something that isn't in the news, like you say. I said he made it up (cause it isn't written or confirmed any fucking where), then he asked me to prove it. Its too retarded for words.

I can bet you both of my hands and feet that holding the alt button down extends the time of which items names are displayed.
Extends as in, it doesn't fade out until 5 seconds after you let go of the button.
  • #18 HaYDeN
guys, its common sense.. I will also offer my hands and feet..

once the 5 seconds is up and the engine still see's the ALT key as pressed, what do you think its going to do? start the cycle again, over and over again appearing static until the ALT is depressed.

and the guys saying "oh so it will only show once and THATS IT!?!?!??" - omg.. read please kthx.

According to Bashiok from battle.net forums, they ALT key isn't going to be the same.

"The way it works now is that when an item drops the name shows for about 5 seconds and then they fade out and disappear. Pressing Alt shows all dropped item names for again about 5 seconds and then the names fade out and disappear.

I think this is a great idea. What do you think?
  • #20 IDKFA
I think it's a good idea, keeps you from constantly pressing alt.
The only thing I'd worry about would be the the names getting in way of your cursor, I mean if they're going to be click-able, the name of the thing with it's black bar will take up some space on the screen, and if there's more things, I don't want my char to start picking up things when I want him to attack something.
But it's just a big "what if?"
