Leipzig 2008: inDiablo talks to Jay Wilson about death and trade

German website inDiablo managed to get in touch with Jay Wilson for a short interview session regarding Diablo III and Jay had plenty to share on that front, with some new details about how the game handles death penalties, trade windows, and a bit on mercenaries.

The video can be streamed from Hellforge and a transcript can be found at inDiablo.

Yeah, it was badly done about the losing experience in D2. I mean on a higher lvl's, when you had 90lvl for example, when you died, you lost a lot of exp. It costed your HOURS of playing. Losing the gold wasn't so bad, as the gold was not so usable in D2 so you could have afforded to lose it ;)

Thanks for the inverview. Ah, and it's good that there will be an improvement about the mercenaries :)

"inDiablo.de: How will you guaranteee that Diablo 3 will not be censored or rated 18+ in germany?
Jay Wilson: The biggest thing is, that we are targeting not to be an 18+ game. If we were to get an 18+ rating, we would likely make some changes to the german edition, to make sure it would not get this rating. But we handle those things pretty far in advance. We are already talking about the rating and what qualifies as an 18+ rating in europe to make sure that we do not hit that level, because we definitely want to make sure that the game is sold here.
    "
Is 18+ in europe = to M rated or AO? Im hoping it means AO because if they want it to NOT be M rated they're insane.

18+ in Germany/Europe according to PEGI is similar to an AO rating in the United States.

16+ is similar to a Mature 17 rating in the US. So that's what they're aiming for.

Diablo 2 and many other violent games are rated 16+. Very few games, including Age of Conan, receive an 18+ rating, and those that do are not allowed to be displayed on shelves.

i like the idea of bring back the mercs (now followers) its good to have some help.

I also think that it would be funny if they kept some of the joke items in the game (example: your the barbarian and your killing monsters with two candy canes...lol)

in the guy who plays Cain interview, he says d3 is much more serious than d2 was, so I doubt we will see any candy canes :-/

I'd say this was a fairly good interview- more than I can say for some others, which were so vague that we might as well asked a paper sack.

this is the first interview that got us new info. all the others just keep asking the same questions and get the same answers.

Cool lots of new info in this one; nice catch. I'm looking forward to hearing about the improvement of mercs and he said they "will be more interesting." Maybe they will have back stories like in the books (ie Kingdom of Shadow). Also nice to see the death penalty gone and having old legendary items possibly come back; would like to see how they implement that, honestly just want to see some loot. I'd say the best interview to date since most of the others were just rehash of old info.

Great interview, finally someone asked questions besides "will the art direction change?" and with the witch doctor in D3 will the necro return?

really good interview, some nice new info in there! I especially like the part when he talks about the new mercs (followers) and how they have been improved since diablo2. Hopefully this means you can customize them even more then in D2 (stats, equipment and perhaps even some skills).

Could it be that we will have lots of followers?!?
If Sanctuary is being invaded... maybe we will need help in greater number

    But what about "hiring mechanics"...
In the trailer we only saw two archer sidekicks and they sorta sucked :)

I think penalties upon death aren't so bad, the perfect example is hardcore playing, for those who played hardcore, you know the thrill of beeing so close to die, you really really don't want to die and you have a good reason for that, if you don't have a good reason, you won't fight so hard to be alive. On the other hand, with big death penalties players might stop engaging risky battles and play safe. He talked about fire arrows from monsters beeing simillar to player's fire arrows, there is some kind of ranged class amazon-like in the game, but for some reason they didn't called it amazon as barbarian is the only returning class. I guess instead of a Javalin/Bow specc there'll be a different combination for the ranged class.

Why is he talking about legendary items... (WoW inspired?). In Diablo universe they are called unique items...

I didn't like his talk about almost making no penalty when you die... I mean, I want some real motivation to stay alive, other than not wasting time. So of course I want some penalty that hurts.. a bit.

It's not about not giving any penalty, it's more about not pissing off people who die. Like losing a lot of XP and having to walk all your back to your corpse with no gear and your using a melee can be pretty annoying. Besides if gold is going to be more important there's still some important penalty for dying.

I'm really curious as for what death system they're going to come up with and how it will be different from both WoW and D2.
