Regardless, that doesn't mean we won't see Necromancers as NPCs. This is not official through the interview, but the city of Ureh is within Necromancer territory, thus inevitable not to see Necromancer NPCs. Richard A. Knaak told me a few days ago "Ureh is an integral part of the game." Two years ago, Knaak also told us during the public Q&A that Blizzard had very special plans for Zayl the Necromancer.
The Necromancer, he said, was simply a victim of his own success. He was just too well crafted as a character, something that Wilson's Blizzard design cohorts, current and former, likely don't mind hearing. Necro fans on the other hand, probably won't be too thrilled to learn of his disappearance, despite the Witch Doctor class's similarities.
Wow, lamest decision ever.
I hope some of the other classes can fix this gap, because already two of the five characters are lame as shit. In D2 all the characters were cool, even if I didn't particularly like their style. The reason: balance. Everyone got something they liked. Even the barbarian, which I hate, felt like it had a place in D2. Now, we get two crappy characters, one of which has almost no appeal (here's looking at you, witchy).
On the plus side, the game looks amazing. I have no problem with the art. So I can watch two crappy characters chop their way through this amazing world, and, hopefully, story.
Edit: I love the idea of new characters, so don't flame me on that score. I hold out hope that the last three will be more appealing. My problem in this case is why they would choose that idiot character to return out of all the possibilities, particularly when the Paladin is the class that best fits in any notion of the Diablo game world.
I'm guessing a blackgaurd will be one of the new classes. hes my fav come on blacky! bring the darkness melee in come on blacky
That would be so cool to play.
A sort of consolation for taking away the paladin and sorceress
To bad we won't know for 1+ year as the other melee is probably the least finished of the 5 classes.
/cry
In the final analysis, though - it is true that some people like playing 'dark' character - even having 'evil' plot options...
But I think most people prefer the side of 'light' - as traditionally depicted... Many of these people would love to play the Paladin class...
But if despite all this the Paladin class doesn't make it - there should be options to play on the side of 'light' - at least have the class choices I would think - perhaps including an 'Angelic' class?
More later - there's still plenty of time for us to have input in this process.
Another thing is the argument of leaving behind other classes... especially Necromancer. When they say there wasn't alot of room for improvement, it means we would get almost the same class from Diablo 2 with the same skills... if you wanna play a necro, play Diablo 2. Diablo 3 is not a remake of Diablo 2 with improved graphics.
Seriously guys. I don't get it. Is it so hard to understand? Is it really worth turning tables for? I'm trying to understand you guys and I just don't get what am I missing here!?
every class has room for improvement, for blizzard to conclude that one class is finished and doesn't need improvement is a sign that blizzard either didn't really examine that class, or blizzard has another reason for not including that class but doesn't want to make it officiially known at this point.
barbarian class returning. it should have been paladin if any class where to return. in a world of unholy demons, who else would return except the holy paladin?
perhaps the classes have changed after twenty years have passed.
perhaps the storyline of D3 influences these class decisions.
has Pandemonium Fortress fallen and the paladins scattered across the heavens?
i expect the story will explain what has happened and provide insight into these changes.
it's a high expectation.
The Barb returned mostly because lorewise he got ties with the Worldstone and because his people are still somewhat in touch with their Nephalic powers (As demonstrated by skills like Warcries, Hammer of the Ancient, Seismic Slam, etc.) and all this make a good plot device. Mark my words, the new class fighting for the light won't come from the Zakarum Church.
Kind of weird since the only ones who fight for the Light are the Zakarum. Multiple times in Diablo lore does it speak of Inquisitors, yet we have not seen them.
I think that people are emotionally attached to their hammerdins, smiters, zealers, fohers, and auradins. I'm glad that the Paladin isn't returning, the way he was used in multi-player was just pathetic.
That's right. I dissed your Paladins!
Ah but you're forgetting that new society living on Skovos which were founded by an Angel and her lover (which was briefly introduced in the lore panel of the WWI). Sounds like we may see something like a half human half angel class or something along the line.
What? How am I forgetting that? That has nothing to do with the Paladin, The Zakarum, the Inquisitors or anything even remotely close to what I was talking about.
Sort of like the Witch Doctor Necomancer thing. Some similarities but not the same.
Zakarum is the only major faith or religious organisation present in the majority of large towns and cities in the Diablo universe that has not been completely destroyed. Unlike Inarius' Cathadral of Light and the Triune.
Whether as an NPC, playable class or enemy, there will be someone from the Zakarum in d3.
Warrior became Barbarian.
Rogue became Amazon.
Sorcerer became Sorceress.
Of course you have to have a robed caster class, as other people have pointed out... Maybe something like a Cleric or Disciple, if it goes toward the Light, or maybe an Arcanist. (arcane magic announced?)
And then, I would love to see a Ranger class, like someone else said, something like Strider/Aragorn from LOTR, that combines aspects of a Druid and a Rogue.
It'll be interesting to see what classes they can make to compliment a hulking Barbarian, and a really flamboyant Witch Doctor...
