Leipzig 2008 - IGN Talks with Jay Wilson

IGN cornered Jay Wilson at the 2008 Leipzig GC today to continue discussion on the Art direction, and Health Potions system. What everyone saw at the Invitationals gameplay video is merely the first levels of the game, which are meant to be colorful. We will see darker and grittier scenes as we delve deeper into the world of Sanctuary... giving a psychological sense that things will get worse and worse as we advance through the game.

Read the interview at IGN.
A crafting system is also in the works, though it won't be anything like Diablo II's Horadric Cube combinations. "I don't know if I can think of a comparison," said Wilson. "I think that system is a pretty cool and different kind of system from anything that we've had before."

Very interesting stuff.. Thanks for posting, Medievaldragon!

Blizzard wasn't making any sort of announcements for Diablo III. So far it's just the Barbarian and Witch Doctor classes that we know of, and we were told Blizzcon 2008 will be the place for another reveal.

Good news for those who managed to get tickets...
there are no health potions to be purchased at vendors.
Yep, that's what I was expecting. So they're drops only..
With the inventory screen, players will no longer have to deal with items taking up multiple slots as in Diablo games past. Now, all items will just take up one slot, though exactly how that's going to be implemented is still being worked on. Wilson explained some of the issues being taken into consideration. "The one really great thing that most people wouldn't argue with was the grid-based system allowed for very large icons which made the items feel better. So one of the things we don't like about the current inventory is the icons are smaller than we'd like them to be, so we're working on sizing up the icons themselves to be very large, much larger than say World of Warcraft ... We've experimented with other things like having different bag types hold different kinds of items, like big items go into this bag and small items go into this bag, but we haven't really settled on anything like that. What we don't want is the grid-based Tetris sort of system."
Someone should tell them to make the icons a bit bigger, but if you hold the icon on your cursor it should show the full item at the right size. That would make me happy.
Since our time for the interview was limited, we shifted gears into what Diablo III's environments might be like over the course of the story. "I don't think we're going to have anything quite as out there as [Diablo II's] Arcane Sanctuary. I'd say the scale and scope of the game in terms of the threat you end up facing is much, much higher than the previous games. I think if you look at the cinematic trailer there's never really been an invasion of Sanctuary, and I think from the trailer it's obvious that's where we're headed. A lot of what happened in the original Diablo was very small in scope. Even in Diablo II you traveled all over the world, like you're really just facing the aftermath of Diablo walking through the world ... There was a bit of it with Lord of Destruction. Baal's invasion was sizable, but we really want to go more, higher than that. That's about as detailed as I can be without giving away key story elements."
Looking at how much more of a threat there was going on in D2 versus D1, this doesn't surprise me. It also gives us another wedge in the direction of thinking the Prime Evils had even planned to be defeated, up to the point where Tyrael destroys the Worldstone..
Hmm, shame about not doing something like Arcane Sanctuary anymore, though.. I was really looking forward to a dungeon like that in D3 in 3D.. uhm that sounds weird; D3 in 3D.. :p
If you join into my game and I'm three quests ahead of you, we don't want you to feel like 'Oh, I don't want to play with you because you're three quests ahead of me.' So what we try to do is lean more toward 'Okay, you can get done everything from this point on, and then you can come back in a previous game and finish these other things.'
Not so sure I like that news, because it means people can get rushed again.. But meh, there's good sides to that, too.

I hope people stop asking Jay questions about the Art direction and potions system, it's a really boring topic now.

Take what? The petitioners would effectively be getting what they wanted this whole time.

Aside from the WOWesque art direction, that is.

I can't wait to see the large scale invasion he brought up. It will definitely come from Mt. Arreat, you can already see the sanctuary armies lined up in front of it waiting. I just wonder what happend to the three ancient ones on the top of the mountain. I hope they return on the dark side.

I hope they do a good job on this i have high hopes for a good crafting system.

Worldstone was destroyed and the whole mountain went BOOM! No mountain, no ancients.

Hahah yeah well, this isn't the first time Blizzard has mentioned that they want to use contrasting environments in Diablo3, and the idea of going from normal non-defiled environments to darker more sinister looking places.

I think what this does represent though, is the fact that people are prone to just assuming the worst and taking things at face value without really doing their research. However people who signed the petition because of the "WoWesque" art direction are just SOL.

"The goal is to have players use skills where previously they would have used a potion"

This guy seems to know what he's doing..

Okay it progresses from "happy fields filled with funky (funny) zombies and green dungeons with cute statues" to something like what we would like more...

Id like to skip the first few levels. =P And choose the most skinny char just for the sake of not having to stare at the exaggerated armors...

The low quality object models (including equipment and environment) seems to stay even if the statues get somehow more creepy...

^That^ is MY wiev on the whole thing. Anyone else agree?

Again, its JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION. Cant know how many share that thoughts.

I do ;) But i don't mind walking on beautiful places at the beggining. BUT i don't like that the outside is all convered by blur. I hate blur. I wish i can choose the details in some option as well ;)

Well that interview gave exactly ZERO new information. Hell even PC gamers coverage with "exclusive" info said absolutly nothing.

I'm getting tired of hearing the reasons behind the art change, we know already, we know already about the health orbs.

    ASK SOME NEW QUESTIONS!

Actual information will be in Blizzcon.

Asking about the object models (mainly the statues and the barb armor) would be good.
