Diablo 3 Achievements vs. Steam/WoW's

Bashiok has responded to a comparison between Steam and World of Warcraft achievements versus Diablo 3's. The difference between the three is clear: Diablo 3 is not an MMO. -- source
Bashiok: Steam achievements are generally based around small, situational, skill, or long-term goals in short "round" or level based FPS'. So obviously achievements in an MMO are going to be vastly different, and can cover a much wider range of goals from small and fun, to long and involved, and yes even to the impossible.

For us completionists we're going to be frustrated by not being able to have everything. But part of the system is specifically to show off where you've been, how long you've been playing, and what you've accomplished. I'm going to have to deal with the fact that I wasn't everywhere or did everything at some point in time. I'm going to have to focus on the goals I can achieve instead of those I can't. There's no point crying over milk that was spilled two years ago that I just found all dried and crusty under my refrigerator.

That's World of Warcraft though. It's a persistent world and moves and evolves and changes with patch to patch, and expansion to expansion. There's a lot more area for there to be achievements that were attainable at one time, but due to that evolution of the game - are no longer possible.

Diablo III isn't an MMO, it doesn't evolve in the same way, and so there's far less chance for there to be an achievement rendered impossible due to game updates.

I want at least two expansions for D3! I think achievements are pretty much worthless, though.

Unless these achievements give you rewards like bonus equipment or titles or etc, I would tend to agree

And yeah, more than one expansion would be lovely. Maybe they can eventually put in all the old chars hehehehe Well, ok, maybe only the ones that didn't suck. Lol but then they'd have to take out the barbarian with the first exp pack :P

achievmentsin d3 = bleh sounds like another thing theyve taken from wow and put into d3.

I want at least 2 exps or one awesome exp for this game, and im hoping that if the nec is coming back in one of them that the corpses stay so we can corpse explosion yet again.

they will probably be worthless if you don't get anything for them but some people just like to complete them, like me, and we just want to have everything finished. If you don't it's ok, but some people find achievements great for additional fun.

Hi, it's just a way to add objectives on top of just finishing the game. Some achievements I guess will just be completed without aiming to. and since this is optional it's cool, and I expect Blizzard to give some kind of reward for it, even if just honorific. I am sure we'll be happy with it... as a side dish at least.

-killing all the monsters of a Hell dificulty game
-finishing the game with all characters

    just to name a few...

Hail to the completionist crowd! ^_^

why does he have to bring steam into this?

If valve wanted to make rpgs and MMOs and rts they would wipe the floor with blizzard

I personally love achievements. But what I would like to know if they are aiming for the Microsoft point system or not. That would explain if this is a natural progression certain games undergo before they are ported to x360 or not.

I don't really care too much but if D3 would ever hit the consoles, I would definitely want one for my x360.

    "Completionists, raise hands."

    o/

WoW is a great game actually (this may have cost me my argument for some people, I know. F*** them). But even if you don't like it, it doesn't mean that any and everything that is in that game must suck, I mean, they do games, right? That's their job, if there's something they thought of making in one game that sounds like it's going to work in another, then why not use it?
For instance, the skill tree system in D2 came from the tech trees from the RTS games, and I don't hear anyone complaining.

there should be an acheivement for finding a Zod rune legit on d2! :D
  • #19 TheBloody-Nine
Ofcourse the success of achievments depend on how much you can show them off. Because thats the main part of MMOs like WOW - showing stuff off, be it equipment or otherwise. Since equipment in MMOs usually dont make a big difference other than nice graphics anyway. Thus an achievment for everyone to see can even be more rewarding to have than a simple item - while they are both digital belongings to your character, only an achiement can tell a story.

I love blizzard, they will always have my money, I would pay 100 dollars each for sc2, d3, and their next mmo...

but they are second to valve

when blizzard makes games that sprout games that sprout games, sure they can contend

but blizzard still has the smell of big business, preventing modding, while valve lets people use the source engine to make their own games and get people involved in gaming
