Thanks, dkreger"Diablo is a game you play for, hopefully, hundreds of hours, and one of the rewards is a variety of different-looking environments." People looking back on old Diablo, he said, may have a selective memory. "People remember the Act I dungeons... but they kind of conveniently forget the green fields of Act I, and all of Act II... and it's palaces, its bright deserts."
Who ever told you that was a good debate strategy? "Prove me wrong, but you can't use the evidence related to the topic." That really bothers me. You're basically telling me I can't hold you accountable for your statements. That's bullshit.
Also, I don't like your reasoning for signing the petition. If it doesn't match your cause, then why support it? You're basically siding with something you don't agree with, for the sake that Blizzard might ignore the main point of the petition to recognize your personal opinion. It just doesn't work that way.
By the way, I always view my game trailers in high resolution because I'm a boss like that. By that, I mean the HD version on GameTrailers.com.
Viewing it again only reaffirms what I am saying. The barbarian is jacked. I see no reason to deny him the big armor. If he can carry it and it offers him the superior protection, who are you to judge? This isn't America's Next Top Model. This is meathead versus Satan. I see no reason to compromise his badassery in the name of fashion.
I really hope D3 doesn't disappoint, maybe if they can show the darker elements in the next game play video or when the announce the other classes they will see the flack drop.
And the video doesn't bring any of the photoshopped pictures to life other than to make it completely saturated and emphasize loss of colour.
There are three arguments on your end.
1) Exaggerated neon green
2) Light radius
3) It's not up to my level of 'satisfaction'
If you are bested at any argument, these 3 topics will emerge. And by the way, what constitutes as 'satisfying' in your terms? When the game is built in your preference with standards that matches your every belief? I also like your approach to the neon colours. 'How in the fuck is that exciting?' Well, how is it exciting if everything is gray? I sure wouldn't like playing a character that was gray, all the monsters are gray, the walls are gray, the skies are gray and the only difference in colour was a very dim candle.
Its one thing to have fantasy-based color schemes.
Its another to look like you might actually be swimming threw what you are walking around in.
As for them talking about how they are not changing how the art style is or the colors in the gameplay trailer... that entire thing was made just for a presentation right? I distinctly remember them saying that they made that trailer just to show off what they had so far(different article, or coulda been bashiok I dont remember). So them saying their not changing anything of the colors or the art style makes no logical sense if what they showed us is not even going to be in the game... it does not even make logical sense on behalf of their part to even say such statements about how they wont change their style or art and how its "no going back now" unless the entire game really is tinted in a green/blue haze. That fact right there worries me.
edit: As for your colour argument, have you seen that I've never said the green particularly the right choice. What photoshop amateurs are doing is taking out the colours and replacing with nothing. That's all they've shown. At any time they prove they can create something that justifiably puts an emphasis on the mood and imagery without extracting colour and injecting nothing, that would be fine with me.
I like this question as it makes no point and is unanswerable. It is a fall back method in which you are acting as if your personal tastes are better than what Blizzard has designed. This kind of question gets us nowhere.
Firstly, he's saying that green lighting is less monotone than a gray level minus the lighting. And that is true. Secondly he's using the word "monotonous" to imply it's meaning of being boring, dull, and repetitive. You went off on what monotone in colors mean to you and missed the point completely. A gray level, as designed by Blizzard was boring to play though multiple times. They tried it and they didn't like how repetitive it became to play through.
Secondly, monotone means that something is of a single color. So a level with green lighting and bluish grays and orange candles will seem less monotone than a dark level filled with gray. We aren't talking about solid squares here - we're talking about a vibrant level with all kinds of lighting and colors. Gray gets boring quickly, while eerie green lighting implies sickness and evil to the viewer.
This question is interesting in that it seems to want to guide the person being asked into a single conclusion. It's like asking "If eating fish is ok then why not eat hump back whales? I mean - why not? You eat fish! You should be ok with eating the whales!!!" It makes no sense and there is no way the level Blizzard showed us was the same thing as looking at a neon pink level. Why is green lighting ok and pink isn't? Because they both do very different things to the look and feel and mood of the game. Duh.
If everything stands out the viewer can read the screen easier and play the game better. It's a basic game design concept.
Blizzard North would totally disagree with you there. After all, Jay Wilson conferred with them about art direction and they said they did not follow your formula. They said they used a much wider color palette than what you are advocating.
Wow, I'm glad they said they aren't changing it for you guys. Otherwise, they'd be delaying a great game just because it's not bland enough for you. Any ambience that you seek can easily be made up for by the dramatic music. Wait...I've got an idea for you. How about when you get the game, you turn the brightness settings down. Problem solved. I'm a fucking genius. They can maintain their art direction and you can have your darker color palette.
It's a bad question because it's based on what you think looks bad. Don't respond point by point to try to save yourself when it's obvious that you are making mistakes in the ways you choose to argue things.
Less color=more monotone. Period. This isn't some debatable ambiguous thing. This is a fact. GG.
Yes. Blizzard said it themselves. You've read the articles. I find it strange that you and so many others keep arguing the same points over and over even after Blizzard themselves have said, "WE made the game like that at first,...and it turned out to be boring and repetivive" (I'm paraphrasing Blizz). How much more can you ask for? They made it gray. They played it. They didn't like it. They moved on. It's like you guys are conveniently forgetting things from the articles in order to keep rambling about how much you hate those scary greens!
You need to make sure everything that is important stands out. And Blizz has done this. making everything gray doesn't help things stand out. It also makes the game feel more drab and boring.
You think Blizzard lied? To what purpose? It's all you can do now, is just make up things in order to feel you have a point to make. Right?
No one said that Diablo is an "anti-monotone" game. We are saying that good game design is about avoiding a monochromatic color scheme and making a world that people enjoying playing through over and over without becoming bored.
Your version of fun does not apply to everyone. You are misusing the term monotone. Many colors or adding a vibrancy to a level does not make it monotone. Making it mostly the same shade of gray makes it monotone - which is what you are asking for. I know you are trying to reason that little torches and items with color will make the game more interesting and exciting so we need to drown them in dark grays and then excite them with a hint of red or orange, but in the end what you are asking for is more monotone from a technical standpoint. And it does get boring. It isn't as exciting as a dungeon that feels alive and ripe with evil. Green is just a color. No need to be scared of it.
I'm sure BLizzard didn't just "slap" green on anything. And the fact that you are questioning the talent of Blizzards art team shows me that you are unwilling to see their work for what it really is. The fact remains that green implies certain things to the human mind and it is effective in created a definite mood. If you can't get into it that's your problem. I can get into it.
The dungeon we saw wasn't "nothing but green". That's exageration. That kills your point.
Gray doesn't contain all colors - white does.
I hate to use Wiki,...but...look at this:
GREY/GRAY
GREY— Commonly represents —
boredom, reality, seriousness, neutrality, and mediocrity
I answered it above. Do you even read my posts? Or do you see my post, instantly hit QUOTE and just start making up things to argue with as you go?
You really don't mind making yourself look stupid in order to avoid a point do you? No, that's not a flame. It's amazing to me that you just said this. I guess it's all you could come up with.
I'm putting your quote about PINK into my sig. Thanks for that. I didn't disregard anything. I said that pink has a different effect so it might not work for a shady dungeon. Green does work however.
Things need to stand out. We need to be able to read the screen well. The barbarian and the enemies stand out well.So do the buttons. Blizz did its job.
I highly doubt that every color is there. Green and blue does not constitute every color. Mist is water vapor. Water is often associated with the color blue. Mist connotes mystery. I don't see why not. Green is the color of poison and such. That connotes death. Rather fitting themes.
But cutting the colors is something you're advocating. If that's not enough, well you're simply being greedy. Oh well, they've already made up their minds. May as well take what you can get. Consider it a consulation prize.
What if I rephrased your own question and said, "Do you really think slapping gray on whatever makes anything eerie per definition?" Also, if you believe gray is one of the least boring colours imaginable because it consists of every colour, then you must think black is the greatest pigment in the world because it contains all the colours of the rainbow! Would you like to see the game plastered with black to create a mood?
This question can only be answered one way. What is the answer you would like to hear?
