With the recent announcement of Diablo III and the excitement building for the game, an author on Blizzard Guru has written an article entitled "Diablo III and Hellgate: London - Same Genealogy?" to reflect upon another relatively recent game launch, the hype preceding it's launch and it's failure to gather the critical acclaim that so many eager Diablo fans wanted: Hellgate: London.
I thought the article was a really good read. It brought up interesting points and supported them. It actually made me want to be a writer for a Blizzard oriented fan site. I've recommended the article to friends and they seem to like it too.
To my main point: I think the writer really hit on something large here. The guys who broke off and made HG got big heads and decided that they could make their own games. They, in my opinion, did use notes from D3 and tried to make their own beast only to put out a product that never would have cleared the Blizzard standards of polish. I'm surprised they released a game like this with all they should have learned working at Blizz.

True, but Blizzard back in 98' was different than Blizzard in the time Period they started their work on Hellgate and finished in 2007. Anyhow, 3/4 of the FSS staff was compromised of programmers that have only worked on Gameboy Advance games which I found out by reading the Dev Blogs on the site. I'm not surprised the game turned out the way it did especially under EA. Funny they left Blizzard and wen't to someone like EA in the first place.
But there are some successful Ex-Blizzard Employees as well that helped create Guild Wars. The game at the time had great optimization for the graphics it displayed, successful content filled game. You know what' s funny guys, Guild Wars gave you the well done Free seasonal Events, extra items, and continuous updates without a Monthly Fee, while Hellgate Charged for things like seasonal events, and were very poorly done, often demanded to be over with by the players.
If it weren't for these three factors, i'd pick hellgate over d2
crap performance (I have a high-end computer, it's the game's network that's the problem because my personal connection is usually next-to-godly)
I picked a marksman and i got to lvl 20 before i realised that I don't want to do the math to find out what the best gun was for my style.
I blew like 7 skill points minimum in grenades and tactical strikes (raining hell from an airplane didn't make too much sense when you're in a sewer.
But I will NEVER pick hgl over another game without actually playing it. I advise everyone else to follow unless you want to look ignorant. Yes, HG:L sucked. Saying it's better than a game you haven't played= bein' ignant.
But as to Jordan's post, Guild Wars > Hellgate a million times over.
