Here's a snippet from the interview. The following quote relates to Diablo III's supposed similarities with Blizzard's other game, World of Warcraft:
Kotaku: In the demo you showed during the Opening Ceremony, you gave us a glimpse at the Witch Doctor class which seems to use several spells similar to those found in World of Warcraft. Do you worry that some fans will think you’re just copying aspects of WoW?Feel free to share your thoughts on the matter.
Jay Wilson: No. Do I think people will say that? Yes, I think they will. One of the things I like to remind people is that it’s okay to steal from ourselves. A good idea is a good idea and a good skill is a good skill and so when we look across all our games we borrow from each other all of the time. But the really key and important thing is do we play like World of Warcraft? No! We don’t play anything like it, Diablo has a different feel to it and that’s fine. If we look at the history of Blizzard games, at Warcraft I and II, the spell Blizzard appeared, it also appeared in WoW and Diablo II. I almost think it’s more like a signature but as long as a game has enough original stuff that it stands on its own and plays like its own game, that’s what matters.
Actually wrong. The Paladin first appeared in Warcraft 1 as the upgraded version to the Humans Knight unit. Along with the creation of the Silverhand during I believe Warcraft 2(might have been the first one?).
Diablo borrowed the Paladin from Warcraft, however, Warcraft 3 borrowed the idea of Aura's from Diablo 2's paladin.
Anyway, just pointing that out.
People should not confuse D3 with Warcraft at all. Blizzard has always borrowed ideas from their games. Compare the Undead in WC3 with the Zerg in Starcraft, or the fact that certain Night Elf buildings in Wc3 can move around, similar to the Terran in Starcraft. The way the spell Blink in Wc3 works is very similar to the way Diablo's Teleport works. Frost Nova in WoW works closer to the D2's version than to the Wc3 version.
People should not be so surprised to see similarities among Blizzard games, they've been doing it since they started. Its part of what makes Blizzard games cool, you find little Easter Eggs in they're games, like in Wc3 in one mission, a monster named The Butcher says "Ahhh, Fresh Meat!", straight from Diablo 1.
any stuff regarding d3 is good enough for me
(btw love the sig man ^_^)
I can understand your point.
They did borrow a little flavor from WOW, but it isn't much. Some of the most angry people seem to think they are taking 100% from WOW, which isn't true. It is just a little flavor of WOW style, which is Blizzard's style. For the most part, the art is Diablo.
I can live with a little hint of WOW flavor, if it is done in good taste and done well. So far it seems to be done well. I don't see a problem.
Paladins were in WC2 way before Diablo. Also, Paladins are meant to be "Holy Warriors" so they have a place in both.
EDIT: I should have read m ore and saw someone else already corrected you.. Oh well
seriously, go play a bad game like WAR if you are disappointed with blizzard
I'll be canceling my WAR preorder just to want d3 moar
I would like to hear an interview with a Blizzard rep about their opinion on this whole influx of people not agreeing fully with a few of the art design choices.
Medieval - Do you think you could get an interview scheduled sometime in the next month. I am really curious as to Blizzard's reaction.
Thank you MD for all your help and news.
That one was for us.
