Personally, I liked what I saw -- and I saw that demo right on my face on a HUGE screen at the event with plenty of detail. The outdoors naturally need to look sharp and colorful, while the dungeons have that dark ambience. There is also obviously a change of illumination between 2D and 3D environments.
UPDATE: This quote was from the same day the game was announced, so it doesn't reflect much on the afterward fan response to the game. In short, he did not read the petition at that point. However, for your knowledge, I submitted today the Diablo III Art Design Direction Survey thread to Bashiok (Diablo III Community Manager). Your feedback was confirmed to have been received.Keith Lee - One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for Diablo III is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in Lord of the Rings. Not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn't allow you to have a lot of contrast.
He continued: Diablo I and Diablo II are darker, and I think that the one of the main reasons why is the fact that in Diablo I, you're basically in a dungeon the whole time. And in contrast to Diablo III, you'll be exploring outdoors, you'll be in dungeons, you'll be experiencing so many different areas. We want to bring as much variety as we can when you're playing the game so that you're excited to check out new environments. We don't want everything to look the same and that's really what we're trying to aim for.
Said thread contains links to three of the online petitions.
Anyway i'll bet the game will be greatand it will be played for a loooooong time
... i cryed when i saw Diablo III the first time... its so beautiful *-*
lets wait for it
I don't think it's whining at all, it's constructive criticism. As a theme, Diablo has been a hack 'n' Slash action rpg set in a dark horror-fantasy driven world (with slight noir undertones), Diablo III looks to be set in a supernatural fantasy world with a dab of horror. (at least that's my take on it from the game play trailer.)
To me, Diablo was all about the feeling of fear (not so much DII though) and that's what made it special (a lot like the Aliens game where you wouldn't know where the next Alien was, until it was almost crawling up your backside.) the feeling of fear can be generated in many ways, and in terms of gaming, it's through the use of being unaware of your surroundings and what's around the next corner, through the use of low light and lots of shadows, the uncertainty of death/losing, sounds which give clues of what's beyond the darkness, twisted music which adds to the darkness, etc..
I don't really feel Diablo III has any of these traits as far as the trailer's concerned.
I for one would dislike the game if these "darkness" qualities were not added, but a lot of the people here who are trying to silence us from disputing these differences wouldn't really care if it were dark or bright. I've hardly come across a single post which a user has explained how they would rather this "new" feel to the older, darker one.
If you want the same success as Diablo 2 enjoyed. Then don't disappoint your core fans.
I agree to this point, I was playing hell gate london as well and I gotta tell ya. . . After the same old thing every level it really is of no surprise that flagship studios went bankrupt. If you stare at the same thing for too long you completely lose interest, and I really think that blizzard understands that. I also agree to the previous post that someone said that according the story line, it's suppose to look clean, and that we haven't even touched base with anything they're going to create in the really dark and dreary side. After all, wouldn't it seem odd that they'd put the Coup De Grace in level 1?
Take a look at the OLD whirlwind animation in D2. Was it animated realistically? HELL no. Did it look awesome? HELL YES.
All of you that LIKE the direction the art is going, are either in denial, young, or have never played a Diablo game. Blizzard have said themselves that the game's art style (and BOSS style, even) are heavily influenced by WoW.
Why is this? Because the entire Diablo team, as of now, consists of the WoW team. The people who created Diablo 2 are NOT working on D3. That's right, all we have in hopes for D3 is a bunch of WoW-crazed developers who are overly proud of their WoW graphics and gameplay.
This game is going to look, and possibly feel like World of Warcraft.
It may still be fun, but it will be World of Diablo. Mark my words. In fact, i'm sigging this for when the game actually comes out.
Have you played any games that the developers that originally worked on Diablo II have made since? If not, perhaps you can go check it out as that seems to be the game for you as of the present moment. The art direction has some pros and cons in my opinion and to be quite honest, I really don't care all that much that it looks different. My attachment to the diablo series was for the gameplay, not the art design. I liked the epic feeling of blowing up hordes of demons with rapid fire skills that I could choose from. On a further note, I don't think it's fair to judge the entire game's graphics based on an unfinished product that we haven't even seen 1/100th of the total world. (Don't get scared because I said world, it'll be ok). Furthermore, I don't think it's fair to say if you like the art direction you don't know what you're talking about. That seems like a pretty fruitless argument to me.
"Never played a Diablo game"? You are just hilarious.
The game's art style is heavly influencied by WoW? Hah. I am reallly sad that anyone has just signed that bullshit of changing art direction - 70% doesn't even knew that there WAS an art direction, and 50% doesn't even KNOW what that guys do. That is just pathetic, judging everything just because of 20 minutes of video in a game that will take more than 20 hours to play, at least. The video it's awesome, nevertheless. And it's just like Blizz said - you need contrast. 50000+ bastards that complained about the art direction would be the first ones to complain about the boring game, with repetitive themes and scenario. Want more darkness? Turn off the lights and brightness. Less colors and contrast? Turn off colors and contrast - play the game at black & white. Goddamit. Just pseudogothic-pseudotrue-pseudohardcore kids willing to just make some noise. And I am sure of one thing - of all this people, barely 1000 people really should be listened, and you are NOT one of them. 49000 are just wannabe bastards that believes "criticism is bein' hardcore an' a really Diablu fan an' stuff an' I make part of a thin'". "Mark my words", wannabe "hardcore fans": [I will not sig this for later - in fact, YOU bastards can do this for me. I don't need this stupidity.] if the art direction changes and D3 becames a b&w game, it will be known as the WORST DISASTER for Blizz and you guys will be the ones to blame, pseudotrue and pseudofans. Hope you all burn to ashes.
Vão arranjar algo pra fazer e parem com a porra do mimimi, caralho.
This all sounds so stupid if you ask me. blackarts-viper, I couldn't agree with you more.. What the heck is the problems with these complaining so-called Diablo fans? Here's a fun thought : Why don't you 50,000+ idiots work on the art direction of the game and see where you end up, shall we? Instead of complaining, you shoulf be thanking Blizzard for making an effort to supply us with a new game that we can all enjoy as TRUE DIABLO FANS would. But I guess you're not. You're just here to complain. I love the game, I love the feel of the game. I simply love the Diablo series because of its rich lore and storyline. Don't you agree? Graphics isn't everything in a game. Don't be so immature with this. For anyone else who wants to complain, wait for further updates on the developments, until then, SHUT UP!!!

Graphics are most things, it's how you interact with the game.
If you aren't happy with interacting with the game you very well aren't going to keep playing it.
It looks gay and cartoonish ? Get a clue.
From what he typed, he said there will be contrast, Dark, Light, Colors, Environments, variety of Tilesets. That's what I like to read, Titan Quest did a good job of that, Hellgate:London did a bad job of that, and that's the kind of dark game people seem to want. Hellate used such Gloomy, Dark, Bland, Reptitive, Recycled tilesets from the 1st Act to the Last Act, I completely lost interest in the game before I could even finish it as short and badly produced as it was. I'm glad Diablo 3 will have viareity. It also helps make it more refreshing and addicting.
