Personally, I liked what I saw -- and I saw that demo right on my face on a HUGE screen at the event with plenty of detail. The outdoors naturally need to look sharp and colorful, while the dungeons have that dark ambience. There is also obviously a change of illumination between 2D and 3D environments.
UPDATE: This quote was from the same day the game was announced, so it doesn't reflect much on the afterward fan response to the game. In short, he did not read the petition at that point. However, for your knowledge, I submitted today the Diablo III Art Design Direction Survey thread to Bashiok (Diablo III Community Manager). Your feedback was confirmed to have been received.Keith Lee - One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for Diablo III is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in Lord of the Rings. Not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn't allow you to have a lot of contrast.
He continued: Diablo I and Diablo II are darker, and I think that the one of the main reasons why is the fact that in Diablo I, you're basically in a dungeon the whole time. And in contrast to Diablo III, you'll be exploring outdoors, you'll be in dungeons, you'll be experiencing so many different areas. We want to bring as much variety as we can when you're playing the game so that you're excited to check out new environments. We don't want everything to look the same and that's really what we're trying to aim for.
Said thread contains links to three of the online petitions.
yes exactly what im thinking
the whole game in general looks great
im in favor for the colors.
But the armor and character models look really..
No one calls me a Muppet!
We can't, however, judge what the other later stages of the game may or may not look like based on the first area - aside from the general art style with painted textures. It will probably grow darker and feel more urgent as the forces of Hell take over and you must travel to defeat them. I feel they will accomplish that. When I watched the video interview with Keith Lee it looks like he is going to explode cause he can't really talk about it yet, he is genuinely stoked on what they are producing which - small graphical issues aside - gives me +1 stoke.
agreed.
here are the shallow ass complaints i have seen so far.
"look the boss doesnt hardly do damage."
ya and im sure the barb starts out with gear and all the skills at the beginning of the game right? wrong, they buffed up the characters to show a game play teaser. so stop whining.
"it looks WoWish"
really? WoWish? have you played WoW...ever? cause this does not look like WoW at all. it does look like a game that is using a current draphic engine instead of one from the 1990s. is that your complaint? the game isnt old?
"the invintory system is a joke"
really, you can tell exactly how all that works from a few second blip about it? thats impressive.
really people. its not like the game comes out tomarrow. there is still AT LEAST a year. and you all know Blizzard, at least a year means about 2 or 3 years untill it actualyl coems out. im sure they are going to tweak and fix and recode and rehash and all that about a million times before its released. so stop whining a week after the game is announced, just be happy they are actually making the game.
GG
hahaha. win
The best ones are The Sin War trilogy... the others take a little more effort to stay interested...
i remember that feeling. when i got Diablo II when it first came out. i think the first thing i got was IK Helm, on my single player Barb. man i about died i was so excited. it dropped and i was like, look, its not blue white grey or yellow. its fucking GREEN! what now, i have a green item, MUAHAHAHA.
ahhh...the good old times. its been a long time since i got a game i was really excited about. i cant wait for diablo 3 and my first set or unique item.
i know exactly how you feel... Those were the days I'd get on the computer past my curfew and magic find until the loading door wouldnt open and that damn "Failed to Launch game" (or w/e it is) screen came up. My first unique item was an oculus... BACK in the days when it was worth like 4 soj's and windforce was considered godly =D BEFORE the hackers / bots / dupers / gayness
seriously i just ordered a friggin 4 gig ram with 500 gig hard drive and a 231 dollar video card so i can be sure ill be able to play it when it first comes out i am hoping to be one of the best, and i dont see why i wont be back when i played D2 i was high on ladder in top 5 then i wuit for a while and came back on LOD and first 2 things i found was Tyreals Might and some sort of Victor thing. and eventually another 97 levels later on my Hdin i found a total of 7 grand charms that had +1 to Zon skills along with Titans javvs or watever they are now but now that ive seen the D3 demo its hard to have fun playing D2
This is all gettingvery ugly.
Two petitions? Fans squabbling over the artwork? People swearing at eachother about what they believe is right?
Somebody said earlier "It's Blizzard's game and they'll do with it what they want"
HAH!
FYI: Blizzard bases all their decisions on what fans want. where do you think patches come from, or expansions?
Either way, if blizz decides to meet the demands of petition #1 or not, i'm still gonna buy it (because i dont care about any petition, either way), play it, play it again, and repeat.
We should all just sit back and relax and wait for a development in the situation from BLIZZ. It makes no point if you shout it here, over and over.
I'm pretty fucken sure - with a link at diablo3.com, BLIZZ already read everything posted here, thats why dfans is a link posted on the homepage of d3.
They know there are no other gamefans like diablofans, and they know we are very fucken fussy.

You think it looks cartoonish? I bet you think that because everyone else thinks that.
