Blizzard hiring Mobile Developers 30 Comments

As posted on Shacknews.com, blizzard is hiring for the following positions, Mobile Producer, Lead Mobile Software Engineer, Lead Mobile UI Designer.

Along with the recent postings for Next-Gen MMO positions it seems like blizzard has a couple big things on the go.

New Position - Mobile Producer
Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a highly organized individual with outstanding communication abilities to manage the process of bringing Blizzard-IP-related functions into the mobile space. The ideal candidate has experience managing resources and seeing projects from inception to completion. Self-direction and follow-up skills are a must, and experience working within the mobile development space is mandatory. For more information please check out the job listing here.

New Position - Lead Mobile Software Engineer
Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an individual to lead a mobile development programming team. The ideal applicant will possess outstanding communication and coordination skills and be capable of leading a group of programmers in bringing Blizzard-IP-related functions to the mobile space. The candidate would be experienced with web-related technologies, MIDP and CLDC development on the J2ME platform, WAP, and WML. New Position - Lead Mobile UI Designer
Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented, self-motivated individual with experience in UI design and implementation for handheld devices to help lead our efforts into the mobile space. The ideal candidate is a designer with a deep understanding of the unique opportunities and limitations of the platform who can help formulate the strategic design goals of our mobile efforts. The lead mobile UI designer must have the capacity both to create and to direct others to create clean designs that balance the Blizzard art style with the specific needs of the mobile audience. well.. i've heard just about enough, first wow expansions, then starcraft 2, and now this CRAP. I'll see you guys in 5 years back in this forum if your still waiting for your messiah (diablo 3).

I hope this falls into the rumoured 4th and 5th unannounced projects-group, because if this is prioritized above D3/SC2/WoW Expansion 2/[insert PC/Console title here] I don't won't know what to believe anymore.

I hate cell-games, I absolutely despise them. As it stands now they're worthless and I'd much rather spend the time when I would be actually playing them on reading a book instad.
But perhaps Blizzard is what the genre needs. If anyone is to kick life into it, it'd be them :)

i'd laugh my head offif the starcraft thats going to be anounced next 19th was a crappy cell phone game :p

maybe they are going to make a warcraft phone game or something, symbian phones for exemple, have very good 3d capabilities.

Well with the recent development and outbreak of smart phones that have browsing capabilities on the net, it wouldn't surprise me if Blizzard is taking this opportunity to their advantage before others do. By the time BLizzard is done creating whatever they have in mind, who knows what kind of phones will be out there. Especially with the release of the new iphone. So i think Blizzard could be making a smart choice by taking this opportunity for more innovation before some other company beats them to it. Who knows this could mean the first ever mobile MMO, or something to the effect...

multiplayer is already very used in phones, like nokia arena thingie for the N-gage or bluetooth ,just the other day on the way to work i was playing DOOM 2 on my phone against a friend of mine using an emulator hehe, not the best control over the character but its fun to pass the time :p

i think more of palmtop than actual mobile phone games. These mini computers operate on Windows, so its more likely to have something in that direction than mobile phones.

yeah i agree with that, these new palm pc's (or so they call them) have high capabilities, who knows what they will be able to do in 2-5 years...

Hehe, I dunno, Blizzard could have something cool cookin' up. They tend to be ahead of the game on stuff like this. Still, let's remember that if they're ANNOUNCING a game on May 19 then they've already got staff for it and have in all likelyhood been working on it for a bit. Remember those incredbily conspicuous job postings last year? Don't get too worried guys. These jobs are for some project far down the road :D

Of course. What I'm worried about is the fact that they are doing mobile jobs at all. I trust in Blizzards abilities, but cell-phone games aren't too good. In fact, I've yet to see a single good one.

Well, I hate mobile games and most console games. The best games I know are on PC. The only good console games are sport games. Games like WoW or D3 or even SC2 would s**k on a cellphone or a psp.

Let's not throw too much shit on consoles here, there are some great games out there. Playstation 2 was a great investment with Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid to name a few.

First thing that popped into my head when I read those job offers was a trading card game like WoW TCG, or a new one from the other franchises.
