posted a message on Ray of Frost
    Wizards,

I'm not a very accomplished Wizard. I had a 60 SC pre-RoS, and my HC Wizard is now 65. So I seek your enlightenment:

Is there any situation in which Ray of Frost is worth using over Disintegrate? Even if I'm stacking Cold damage, the fact that Ray of Frost doesn't pierce just sucks.

The only thing I've found to be moderately workable is using Black Hole to pull all the enemies into the clouds created by Black Ice, which does a lot of damage. I don't have enough AP regen to really make it click though (and Disintegrate worked really well, it's not like Ray of Frost was the clear winner).

I've also used the Snowglobe build with Sleet Storm, and that was fun but it only works better than Disintegrate because the rune makes Ray of Frost behave like an entirely new spell.

    Any clever uses I'm missing?

I mean i just think it takes away a big part of the game that i enjoyed...its a shame all the nonsense from the ah(that blizzard created mind you...they made a pretty penny off it so they dont care) ruined a big part of the game...i almost rather they nerf drop rates a bit and allow trading but only through like agreements in like the trade chat room in the game or something...its almost like whats the point the game can basically be asingle player game now...i dunno just my opinion
Sure. Lots of people feel this way, and were very vocal about it. And it's a totally valid opinion. But you asked why they removed trading, and we told you - to make finding items through gameplay the best way. They took the pro-trade argument into consideration, and decided to go in a different direction.

Happened to me as well. Certain moves, like Heaven's Fury, just wouldn't cast at all and others, like Punish, appeared to cast but did no damage.

I have no idea how I survived, I didn't even think to bail out of the game until I was already flashing.

As I understand it, they wanted to curb people botting and buying/selling items on third party sites. They also wanted to give the legendary items really good drop rates, and they couldn't really do that if you could trade because then people would just be handing them out.

So, you can't trade, but you can actually find really good items on your own.

(I dont know yet why rolling 9% dmg didn't changed the DPS of the weapon, I think it's because it's damage is arcane, but doesn't make much sense,).

Are you saying it didn't change at all? As I under stand it, the % damage only affects the base damage of the weapon unless the bonus damage is non-elemental a.k.a. "black" damage.

Since the base damage of that wand (the damage without the arcane damage bonus) is 210 - 389, that 9% you re-rolled should be worth an extra 19 - 35 damage, or 40 DPS.

Which, of course, is hilarious, but should still have changed the DPS of the weapon.

I'm suggesting they do both. Change the status of sockets from primary to either secondary or just an external component AND tweak this issue with CHD. The two seem inexorably tied together, but it need not be that way with further tweaking. A hard cap on CHD and some other source for such a large % of it in one slot. Whatever....

If they keep sockets as a primary, the socket will continue to narrow the variety of choices in several slots. With socs as a primary, the difference from item to item will have little fluxuation in variety.

I understand; I don't think you need to do both though.

I think sockets make sense as a primary affix, and it's okay if the perfect weapon must have a socket to be perfect (conversely, it'd be okay if the perfect weapon must have some other combination of primary affixes that does not include a socket). There's always going to be some perfect combination we're shooting for.

The problem is that the difference between an item with a socket and an item without a socket is too big. If that gap were smaller, people might well consider sockets the single best affix to have on a weapon, but there's still room for items that don't have one to be useful. As it is now, once you have a socketed weapon, nothing but another socketed weapon can beat it.

That's what they need to shoot for. Personally, I'd really love to see the gems add % elemental damage, so you have a reason to switch gems sometimes. But, there are more elements than gem types.

The issue which concerns me is WHAT a socket is. Should it be a primary affix? I think not.

I think it's fine as a primary affix if it is able to compete fairly with other primary affixes. Currently, as shaggy said above, emeralds completely blow everything else out of the water. That's what needs to change.

If you just add a mechanism for adding a socket, you may as well just bake 135% CD into the characters' baseline because that's all anyone is going to do.

    Quote from st0rmie

I agree that that's the worst town in the game, but to be honest, it makes no difference to me in Adventure Mode. I'm not going to use any town services until after I spend some time playing, and when I do, which act I am in will be determined by which bounty I choose to do.

You're insane, Act I is the worst town by far, the Jeweler is a mile and a half away! Fortunately I can't afford any of his services so it hasn't been an issue yet.

I know you love that title.

Anyway, as a former Paladin fan I was excited to see how they'd bring back the staple Zeal, and unfortunately it's misleading as written and I'm not level 47.

Is it really just 5% IAS (1% x 5 stacks?) or am I (hopefully) misreading it? I mean, Frenzy is like 75% once stacked, isn't it?

Stupid question - is there still regular Tuesday server maintenance this week? Seems like it'd put a damper on the RoS release, having it come out at midnight only to shut the server down for a large block of time in the middle of the very same day.

It will be ladders pretty obviously, but I'm praying they don't just put in standard ladders ala D2.

Diablo 3 is not a game about character creation, thus implementing ladders has limited value. Exclusive items are a terrible idea; why people who want to play ladder feel entitled to this is beyond me, the reward is the competition, the race, if this reward alone is not enough - then stop playing ladders. I don't see the hardcore community begging for exclusive items just because they play HC.

The ladders will be a great reason to start a new character in a game that otherwise doesn't have a lot of motivation to do so (at least in Softcore). So, I see the ladders as a welcome addition. I hope that they implement a system to "retire" characters, similar to how you can "archive" dead Hardcore heroes.

Whether you like ladder-exclusive items or not is just a matter of opinion. Some like the incentive, some don't care for it. Personally, I'd like to see some ladder-exclusive affixes that are geared toward ladder play - bonus exp, bonus chance to find gems, bonus smithing patters, stuff that would help players starting with no support, as you do in a fresh ladder season.

posted a message on Is BoA a good thing? And why?
    Quote from Lokiiiz

Mainly because Diablo has always been a trading game, like every ARPG games.

No, it hasn't. Diablo I didn't even have a trade window. In Diablo II, you could trade, but plenty of people didn't. It was an aspect of the game, and may have been a lot of fun and very important to a portion of the player base, but it didn't change Diablo from an action RPG into a trading game.

Trading rare/magical items is still possible, but what's the point if the Legendaries are 'better' now? Might as well just remove the whole trading system instead.

Have you tried it? The ability to trade legendaries with people you played with is really nice. Thanks to Smart Loot, you're going to use most of the legendaries you find until you're farming at 60/70. When you get to that point, the trading possibilities are so limited that people will actually strike deals with you.

I think removing the Auction House was the only thing Blizzard should have done to prevent people to either just sit down on their butt and just click 'Buy Now' on items that were better than theirs, it just made the life easier for the lazies and also for the people who had plenty of bots.

Maybe. But I think that it would still have held them back from really being able to give players a good drop rate. If every player in the game is finding a legendary every hour or so, the market is still going to get flooded and players are still going to spend more time in the AH than in the game.

I've had tons of legendaries so far and most of them weren't just for me and many of my friends looked at the Clan log when they would log in and they would be like 'damn it would've been good for me' yup.. it would, sadly, I can't trade it to you. Talking about clan, what's the purpose of making a clan if we don't get anything out of it?

I love being able to check out what cool stuff my friends found while they were playing. It motivates me to get into the game and see what kind of cool stuff I'll find. Furthermore, clans give you a group of cool players to join up with the find and share items together. No, you can't have the items they found without you, but that's the whole point - you have to play the game yourself. You can, however, play with your clan mates and share items you find together, which is the whole point.

Might as well be able to trade items between clan members, which would still prevent a lot of 3rd party trading websites to get something out of it and we would still be able to trade to our friends and whatnot. Yes, there will be people selling slots into their clans so they can sell the items their bot is getting, but what else can we do? Bot has always been a problem in every game and we can't just not allow trade for that specific reason, atleast, they got to work for it, they gotta do something, recruit people, being actually trusted.

Bots aren't the only reason for BoA. As I said above, it's there to get you to actually play the game if you want cool items. Being able to trade with people you don't play with undermines that, because it gives you access to items without playing the game, even if they are in a clan with you.

Join a cool clan, get friendly with the members, roll with them, and share items you find together. That's the point of clans.
