i think using 1h weapon + offhand is fine ...especially since having a offhand on a channel-based build is almost always better (ApoC + Crit chance are quite invaluable).
I ran a similar build before the firebird rework patch, and from my personal experience, i would recommend trying the arcane dynamo passive.
I dont know if this is still viable, but back in the day, when tal-rasha was somewhat more popular, somthing like this was cookie-cutter:
You can switch the elements up if you feel like it ofc.

you can ofc modify this in whatever way you like, just try to use every element ...if you didnt already know: the elemental dmg of your weapon procs your elemental exposure passiv but NOT the tal 4p meteor

Damage vise this one is far superior to the forzen orb one, but since it evolves arround channeling abilities it might be a bit hard on your survivability.
You basically want to get 5 stacks on Arcane Dynamo and then start using Arcane Torrent (the Dynamo buff lasts for the ENTIRE cast duration of your Torrent). Frost Nova is the best choice for CC here, since it doesnt interrupt your AT channel when cast - meaning you dont loose your Arcane Dynamo buff AND is a good way to keep melee mobs away (which usually are a threat to channel-oriented builds).

to start off, i have to tell you, that so far the ONLY viable endgame builds for wiards evolve arround the FIrebird 6p set. Playstyle vise TR and Vyrs are more fun and flexible but if you want to aim for t6 or 30+ GRifts FB is really the only option. If you are fine with playing your wizard at ~30 GR level i guess you can even combine 2 sets but after that you essentially need a Unity + SoJ for the ring slots. Good thing about firebirds tho is, that it acutally has 7 pieces so you dont necessarily need a Rorg, if you want to use Magefist or Cindercoat for instance. In terms of power id rank the sets like this:
Firebird >>>>> Vyr's > Tal Rashas.

The title basically says it all.
I have only tried a handfull of GR39s so far and failed misserably :3 ...tho i have to say the RNG was awefull (long / maze-like floors; crappy mobs like Winged assassins and Corrupted Angels and so on).

Personally i think its a playstyle issue. What - in your experience - makes a huge difference in FB effectiveness.
I for instance:
- often find myself cornerd by mobs and stay in the same area far too long.
- feel like my hydra placement is bad...how do you do that smartly anyway?!
- have trouble on deciding which mobs i should skip - i for instance skipp those Act 4 metor guys....are there more mobtypes which are not worth killing?)

Edit: Sperent sparker can be a viable option if combined with FB-offhand AND running blazing hydra. Blazing hydras APS scale with your own attackspeed, so if you decide to make use of that (and maybe having some T&Ts) it is a viable alternative to 2h weapons.
Sep 20, 2014personally i liked the "frozen orb area" of wizard gameplay, but as you accurately said: it simply isnt viable compared to FB (or even arcane) atm. I dont however think that buffing single spells would suffice to make the wizard class more versatile...after all we are supposed to be a "master of the elemtens"-class. I think that it would be great if there was a set that would ...lets say improve ALL AP-spending builds, as there are several good skills (energy twister, meteor and ray of frost are my favourites atm). i just recently started playing D3 again (when 2.1 went live) and i have been experimenting with the "new" Arcane Torrent - Flameward and "Desintegrate - Convergence" runes. Personally i like the added Fire element and would like to build arround one of those skills.
AT is fun, deals TONs of dmg and makes you surprisingly tanky. Unfortunately the aoe isnt that great, which can be a nuissance if there is large group of mobs running towards you. So far i tried out a few of the Blizzard runes for crowd controll. Most of them work like a charm (especially frozen solid). Unfortunately using Blizzard AND AT drains your mana quite fast, which i am not a big fan of, as in some (cluch) scenarios (if there is an open area with lots of mobs for instance) you can literally do NOTHING.
Desintegrates main advantage over AT is its relatively wide AOE which lets you melt even larg packs of mobs rather fast. The main problem with this skill however is, that once the mobs are in melee range, you HAVE TO move, since you dont have some sort of survivability gain (like with the "flame ward" rune).
Anyhow... my main questions to those who have experimented a bit with those skills so far are:
- What kind of "controll" spells are you using?
- How do you manage your ressources? (i dont have any major ressource issues, but if there is a way to minimize AP costs id still like to know^^)
- What legendary gems do think suit this build best? (Teaguk seems quite interesting)
- Are there some "must have" gear-pieces for these kind of builds?

Jun 2, 2014i dont want this to be some kind of "necro-post" but i think the dps-value for his weapon on diabloprogress is not shown correctly. a weapon with that kind of min-max dmg +10% dmg should be at least at 2300 dps. maybe the +%dmg affix still bugged or something. Jun 1, 2014weapon is fine imo, if you play MM / fire archon. playing higher torments is mostly about Toughness tbh so i guess you should try to get a new belt. try to get one with Int, Vit, Armor and All Resist / % Life. You should also try to go for those stats on shoulders and Boots. Altho CDR is definetly a viable option for shoulders. since you can get movespeed cap from paragon points alone, having it on Boots is kind of a waste. If you can get your hands on some "strongarm bracers" i would definetly recommend to use them, since black hole counts as a knockback --> if you get about 50% CDR you can basically keep the strongarm bracers debuff up for an eternity. my thoughts so far:
I have been experimenting with both borns and captain crimsons set so far and im very satisfied with the CC set (although i dont need ressource cost reduction). If you play a fire build, having a full Tals set isnt that good anyway imo... sure you get 100 AR but 5% firedamage / 2 AP reg are not noticeable at all and the 4p procs arent going to come into play anyway, which makes its performance quite underwhelming. IF playing an arcane build with Disintegrate / AT however, i think that the 3p bonus (helm + amu / offhand) could help quite a lot since you could still run the CC set (resource cost reduction would also be helpfull then). Anyway....point being, i dont think Tals is worth it, if you play Mirrorball + fire archon...rather opt for captain crimsons + aughilds + vyrs and (if you havent found an irreplaceable Mainhand like wand of woh) a borns set.

50% CDR seems to be a nice goal to achieve when using Vyrs, as you would have a 30 sec downtime on archon. Going for max CDR on ALL possible gear pieces seems to be too much of a loss in terms of survivability / damage.

Since there is a possibility to go for a "fire archon build" i would like to have some advice on what vyrs item i should go for ....in terms of gambling. I already do have a mediocre chest piece and some rather good pants (Gauntlets and Boots are still to be found)

my thought so far:
if i go the boots i will loose the ashearas set bonus, which wouldnt be my main concern since i would loose them anyway if i use the pants. The thing is that i tought it might be nice to go for captains crimsons boots + girdle in order to get at least "some" toughness and nice CDR. (i would also keep the thals bonus since i have a good head piece on the bank.
If i go for the gauntlets however, i would loose my amazing magefist, which would be a major DPS drop.
