Jul 27, 2013Zek posted a message on Vote for Diablo III's CMs, Blue Posts, Lion and Pan's Diablo MotorcycleI think removing Hell would be for the best. Especially since the AH basically renders the entire leveling scale trivial, having to breeze through the entire game three times is needlessly tedious. It'll be even moreso when the expansion comes out.Posted in: News

Jul 23, 2013Zek posted a message on MrMonstrosity's Loot 2.0 Suggestions, Blue Posts, Developer Interview Round-UpI think at this point the dev team is wishing they had never promised PvP to begin with. What we have now is pretty much what we had in D2, and predictably nobody cares about it because hardly anyone actually played D2's PvP either. I wouldn't be surprised if the real PvP game mode just never comes, not even in an expansion.Posted in: News

Jul 20, 2013Zek posted a message on Wyatt Cheng on EHP and Life Return StatsYou completely missed the point. It's not about the difficulty, it's about gameplay design. They were talking about making things less bursty, so there are grey areas between "I'm at full health and staying there indefinitely" or "oops I just died in half a second".Posted in: News

Jul 10, 2013Zek posted a message on DiabloFans Interview With the Diablo 3 Team, Blue Posts, BlizzCon 2013 Talent ContestQ: There's been a lot of discussion around making players less dependent on purchasing gear from the auction house. What about players who don't like selling gear on the AH either? Has the team considered ways in which to mitigate the feeling that the player is farming gear just so it can be traded for gold, for instance by adding some other form of item sink for high quality loot?Posted in: News
Q: Early in Diablo 3's development it was decided that loot would not become soulbound no matter how often it's equipped or traded. How does the team feel about this decision now? Is item supply inflation considered to be a problem? -

How does this work with playing on hardcore? Can I save my character on a USB before each playsession and then reload him if I happen to die?
This can be done, but it should be noted that all of the heroes are stored together with the profile, so all of your characters on the console would be overwritten with the USB version.
Speechless... random disconnects, game crashes, bluescreens and what have you not have killed more PC HC chars than the monsters themselves, and now not only do the consoles get offline play, they even get to save their HC characters!
I feel shafted.
You really think this is a good thing? Hardcore mode with offline backups is meaningless. It's just the honor system - if that's what you want, play Softcore and delete your character when you die fair and square. -
Jul 2, 2013Zek posted a message on Blizzard Working Hard on 'Loot 2.0', Exclusive Merch at SD Comic Con, Blue Posts, Code of Conduct ClarificationsIt's not complicated - all they're saying is that 100% of their patch-producing manpower is focused on the "itemization update" now, including upcoming skill changes etc. Presumably the changes they're making to loot are so drastic that it also has impact on skill balance, and skills are being tweaked accordingly, so they can't release the skill changes by themselves. It should be good news to the people who believe that Diablo 3 still needs huge overhauls to fix its problems, because that's exactly what it means they're doing. I wouldn't be surprised to see completely revamped stats, etc.Posted in: News
Now if you're going to be upset that other teams in Blizzard are working on the console version and the next expansion rather than this update, I don't know what to tell you, that's just reality. It was never going to be any different. Blizzard is a big company. -
Jul 1, 2013Zek posted a message on Exclusive Fansite Console Info From Blizzard HQThere's no need for conspiracy theories here, the explanation they provided is perfectly plausible. It's an independent team with the authority to make changes to the game as they see fit, no auction house hanging over their heads, and well over a year worth of time to react to the problems with the PC release. It's natural that they would come up with some good improvements. There's no reason to be mad that the console version is good - it's likely that some of these changes will come to PC as part of the itemization patch. Not because anybody decided that the console version should get them first, but because they're good ideas and the PC team probably thought of them too.Posted in: News

Jun 16, 2013Zek posted a message on Scheduled Realm Maintenance, Console Version Was Almost a Twin-Stick Shooter, Official Support for Self-Found, Archon's 50 MilliGame design is all about making choices on behalf of the players. The reality is that most people don't know how the game is most fun and don't want to be responsible for that decision. Every time you add a new option it creates a design burden on the game - now you have to support that option forever, which inevitably comes back to bite you in the future. You're splitting the playerbase again and again, with every new subgroup experiencing the game in a different way. What will the game look like in a few years when there are five different modes you can roll your character into?Posted in: News
Besides, a self-found mode is actually counter-productive to player choice because it's all-or-nothing. You have to choose which way you want to find all of your items and completely discard the other option. What if you want a mix of both self-found and the AH? Tough luck, you're screwed. Making one unified game that is as fun as possible for everyone is the way to go. -

While they're at it, look at most of the other boring "fake passive" skills. Wizard Armors, Magic Weapon, Monk Mantras, and Barb Shouts are freaking boring. They are fake passives, and the double 3 second mantra button isn't all that interesting either. Yes, the utility is great, but the mechanics are boring and silly as hell. Zerk and Archon are cool b/c they change up how you play considerably, at least they're supposed to. He's right that having them up permanently is a problem. But other permanent fake passive buffs are boring. They need to look into changing them up. Pushing a button every 2 minutes isn't skillful, it's boring.
There's nothing wrong with having passive buffs as an option, some people prefer to specialize in one or two attacks. They just need to do more to make other skills more competitive. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Whirlwind Barbs are still very strong, was watching one clean up Torment 6 yesterday. The new Hurricane rune is amazing.

You still get a Greater Cache every 5 bounties, and Rift Keys I assume, which might be enough in and of itself. If they see that people are skipping Bounties then they'll buff it until that stops. There's no reason to be so cynical, Blizzard isn't going to let one of its flagship features go unused.

It's good for the game if Bounties are just rewarding enough to be worth doing, and no more. If the Bounty reward is too much then killing monsters feels bad in comparison - you're encouraged to do the absolute minimum completion goal of each Bounty and then get out of there as fast as possible to speedrun the next one. Bounties are ultimately just an excuse to get people into new zones doing new things, there's no need for them to be the primary source of all exp and loot.

I guess my question is, is there really anyone who would prefer to be equipping bland Rares with great stats rather than Legendaries with unique bonuses? Why is that an appealing decision? I don't want to be in a position where I have to think "man that Legendary bonus is so cool... But not cool enough to be worth losing 15% of my DPS." Screw that, I want to be deciding WHICH cool bonus I can have, not whether or not I get one at all.

They tried to do this in vanilla and it sucked. Granted Legendaries didn't have interesting bonuses either, but generally speaking Legendaries are more fun than Rares and there's nothing really wrong with everybody wearing them in every slot, provided there's a good variety of them. In order for Legendaries to be cool it's necessary that their bonuses be significantly better than an ordinary affix, and that means by definition that Rares are not going to be as good.
Hopefully they can come up with something more interesting for Rares than just simple salvage junk though. Might be cool if enchanting required you to find a Rare with the affix you want or something like that.
