Yes the idea with white items is good from one simple reason: it would make all drop important. On one hand salvaging magic items on the other adding new affixes to high quality white gear. My idea on the system:
add 1st affix 1000 gold makes item magic
add 2nd affix 10000 gold
4th 500k etc
in addition player can choose beetwen: defensive/offensive stat. If affix already exist on item the its stacked (if theres more room for limit, otherwise roll another one)
It should be random at some point and require reasonable amount of gold. Not so cheap that everyone can have gosu items.

The idea of blacksmith is kinda waste nowadays. Since i heard of ninja nerf of yellow items (4 and 6 affixes) using blacksmith is useless.Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
But to my point ,I think it might be good idea to add some options like exploring new recipies:
-you pay x essences and theres a chance to explore new type of craft. It hasn`t to be legendary ,just blue/yellow medium level item eq. 20-45 item level. It will be nice alternative for selling low level items to merchants.
The list of low level recipies which available is quite short \. Personaly a stopped to use that ;/
