I will admit I was optimistic there might be something revealed at Gamescon due to Quin being flown there, but now I'm more reserved. The tweet about Blizzcon being cool is nice, but it could just be a big celebration due to the anniversary of the franchise, not necessarily anything being announced.

I also don't get why many people think there will be an D2 HD release. Not once has Blizz ever stated/hinted at anything like that. Not saying it isn't possible, but I can't understand why so many people think this is something that IS going to happen. Plus, all this talk about the "new, unannounced project" very well could be a D3 expansion. Why too, do so many people think it has to be a new game entirely?

I don't take a lot of stock in a Forbes article either, but it is highly probable that the new content was part of an expansion. The talk of no new act doesn't mean the stuff added wasn't from a planned exp. Just like RoS and the D2 exp, there is generally only 2 new tiles sets for the new act, which were included in one of the patches. All they would have had to add is some cinematics, cut scenes, and some story to make it into an actual act...

Of course when someone says "Blizz is flying me outto gamescon" that means they are paying for the trip. Otherwise at best they might say they were invited. I too hope there is an exp, and I think something will be announced due to Quin's apparent excitement. But just because they are flying him there doesn't guarantee an expansion!

Quin was invited to a Blizzcon event to stream when they only released a patch.

btw, for me its extremly unsual that Blizz reveal something outside of Blizzcon. Did they ever do that before?

I mean thats what i have observed. so far they have announced everything on Blizzcon

Reaper of Souls was announced at Gamescom...

They flew popular streamers out to Blizzcon for the major 2.4 patch for sure, but even if there were no patch they would probably still fly streamers out since it is a Blizzard event.

The difference is Blizzard are flying Quin out and its Gamescom, a conference that is not dedicated to Blizzard thus it must be a reason more than just playing the game or streaming from there, Quin must be showing something off...

"Must" is a very strong word.
I wouldn't beard event so sure about anything and i definitely wouldn't set my hopes up for anything Diablo related. Have you not seen the past couple of Blizzcons? how can you even be remotely excited? I wouldn't be surprised at all if they completely shit on the diablo franchise once again.ard
I'm with those that think at least something special will be announced/displayed for them to have decided to fly Quin out. He himself stated in a video that they told him something that he just couldn't pass up on so my guess is it is more than just having him do some streaming from there, especially when it isn't a Blizzard event...

Would it really be a shock if we got a D3 expansion 2 reveal at Gamescom AND a Diablo 4 sneak reveal at Blizzcon?

If we know anything about Blizzard, it takes them 4-5 years to develop a sound product from scratch (which is not actually all that bad). Given this information, IF we were to get a D3 expansion 2 in say March, that would give the expansion a 3.5-4 year life, which is long for an expansion, but I feel all of us would love it if we knew A) we got this new content with a darker setting than anything D3 has provided so far and B) D4 is within site!

I highly doubt they would announce an expansion at Gamescon, then the next game a couple months later. If they did that, the announcement of the next game would take all the attention away from a D3 expansion, and that is something Blizzard is notorious for NOT doing. The warcraft3 to WoW announcement someone else mentioned is a different case; those were two completely different style games.
if it is anything major my guess is an expansion, not D4.

@Dook23, in fact, I seem to remember reading a comment from a dev that was saying exactly that: D3 is meant to be played in bursts when new content is released. Sounds like devs assume that players will move onto different games in the meantime, Blizz own games probably...

That's unfortunate if true, considering how many hours people spent on D2 for example (and only played D2).
I actually think that is the beauty of this franchise....they instill new life into it with patches, then people come back to it.... I've put a ton of hours into this game too, but it was never without breaks. There are many games out there though that you play once, then never look back. But this game, and D2, has that drawback ability that those games don't have...

There's something also that everyone should keep in mind, just because people play this game for hundreds/thousands of hours, experimenting with new builds due to loot found, trying new chars, new modes, etc. etc. doesn't necessarily mean this is what the game is ultimately designed for. Obviously, many will call me crazy for saying this, that this is a game that is constantly updated and meant to be played for a long, long time, but it doesn't change the idea that this is not a MMO or something that is getting more consistent expansions, updates, dynamic content, etc. to keep the player base entertained and engaged....

This game could easily be picked up, played for 60 hours, especially on the consoles, then put to the side, never to be played again, or at least until the next huge content addition and/or expansion... You can easily find people who spend $60 on a different game, play it for 20 hours, then toss it and not saying they didn't get their money's worth.....again, especially on a console...

Though this style of game has historically been treated like it needs to be played on a long, consistent basis, maybe the problem is we should adjust our focus and realize maybe that just isn't the way an ARPG was originally supposed to be played..... if you get my drift. I don't recall Diablo 1 being treated as such...

The thing is, if you have to add an in-game mechanic to automate an in-game task, you can argue that task shouldn't exist to begin with. It's like a car leaking oil - instead of fixing the pan, you keep pouring in more oil.

But then you also wouldn't have to make trips to the repair shop either. :-). But I see your point...

@Shurgosa - well put! I'm also crossing my fingers for something big (beyond set revamps and some item previews and a couple new monster types) at BlizzCon, but not holding my breath for it. We'll see I suppose.

@ZimmZFrog - creating a built-in bot of sorts (see: Warlords of Draenor) will turn D3 into a Facebook game. I don't think that's the solution. Botting is becoming more prevalent because a) nothing is being done about it, B) it's more lucrative/easy to do it now, and c) it injects at least some fun into the game. Grinding 20 grifts for 1 paragon level is bad enough ... now imaging grinding 20 regular rifts on top of that just to be able to do those grifts ... or have a bot do it for you while you sleep.

I have often wondered if adding a system such as the pets from Torchlight might reduce the need where some people feel they need to bot for mats, keys, etc. I don't bot, but if I could send a runner of sorts to town to salvage my items and throw stuff in my stash for me, it would free up some time that I could use to personally play to farm those things. Doesn't sound like much time saved, but it would add up for those who play often...
