Twister is my favourite skill in the game. There I said it.
It's also really effective and the key for some builds. Having said that... yes they are mindless and infuriating and can often veer off for a walk in the woods as you're struggling with mobs. They also don't usually inflict a lot of damage. But...
All twisters are great with LoH and Critical Mass. They refresh cool-downs better than any other skill and heal consistently.
I normally tank with wicked wind and I wouldn't be as effective without twister.
I also have an act 1 and 2 archon build entirely based on Storm Chaser (it puts twisters on screen really fast) and forked lightning. I am very often in archon form twice per elite fight thanks to twister.

Great post! Finally people are seeing the effectiveness of meelee wizPosted in: Wizard: The Ancient Repositories
I am forever experimenting with swapping skills around. The last thing I did was putting wicked wind AND meteor (star pact) in the build at the same time (i play without teleport) and with astral presence I am hardly out of ap. It is more damaging and both those skills are great with LoH and Critical Mass.
What do you think of venom hydra instead of explosive blasts? should help with ap-spenditure as hydra is a one-time cast, obviously you loose on the chance to crit more. Also I tend to scrap them both in group play and use Time Warp to help everyone else's dps.

I had being trying to kill him in a group, but it was too hard... he would put a could on both of us and soon there would be no clear air in the room and we'd both die.Posted in: Wizard: The Ancient Repositories
So I decided to solo him. It was a walk in the park...
DPS: 14,5 k, Life: 38k, resists 900, crit 30%, 16 ap on crit
I am a tank wiz. Left click: Wicked Wind Twister, Right Click: Star Pact meteor, Diamond skin, frost nova, venom hydra, prismatic armour; blur/astral presence/critical mass passives.
Just move outside the cloud as soon as he puts in on you (you're absorbing most of it with diamond skin anyway) and slowly circle the room. By the time you do a 360 the old cloud has disappeared.

Welcome to the club! I am a meelee wizard and I love the style as well as the fact that people just don't expect us to make good tanks (we're actually excellent at it!)Posted in: Wizard: The Ancient Repositories
Resistances are vital, that's true. Life not so much. I'm sitting on 33k at the moment and in act 3 my main problem is elemental damage that a bigger life pool wouldn't soak anyway. I am aiming to build more, but priority should go to resistances. In act 1 you should be fine with 400ish, but by act 3 700 is not enough... So stack Int, and try and get that damage high as possible (killing things quickly can be a problem... we will never compare to glass cannons, but at least we don't die as much).
The key thing to look for actually is crit chance. Take critical mass as your passive and meteor/twister/forcewave and watch your defensive cooldowns reset at the speed of light. 20% served me well in act 1 and 2. 30% now and loving it! If you find crit gear too expensive use the augmented crit chance rune on frost nova until you get the right items.

well, your defenses would be higher, but with no diamond skin or frost nova I think you'll have some problems... how do you survive?Quote from Rufioooootry archon as melee wiz
I was really surprised as well to see how well it worked. Not necessarily saying better than meteor, but incredibly viable. Does arcane twister only ticks once a second? It seems far more than that... bug?Quote from SolusCodaI cannot see how Twister would be better than Meteor, but I will give it a shot.

Hi everyonePosted in: Wizard: The Ancient Repositories
I have been following the wizard discussion here since before the game came out, but this is my first post, please bear with me :-)
I like weird builds. I like trying to find meaning in universally bad-mouthed skills and being a bit unique.
I have been a tank/meelee wizard in Inferno for a month or so with good results (up to Act 2 at the moment) and I have been poaching ideas here and there from other posters. I was using the Spectral Blade/Star pact meteor combination with critical mass to quickly refresh diamond skin and frost nova's cooldown.
I made a random discovery though: Energy Twister (wicked wind) is awesome for this build. I cast it in front of me in the middle of a group and oh my does it trigger critical mass! It crits ALL the time. In a big group of whites I am consistently able to perma-freeze them.
I prefer it to meteor because:
-It goes off straight away as I cast it, usually critting immediately
-It keeps critting over a longer period of time than the burning ground from meteor
-I works like a charm with life on hit, feeding me back life slowly and constantly as opposed to in big spurts like meteor does
I have been dying an awful lot less and I have been able to stand in fire chains and arcane sentries (with a quickly refreshed diamond skin on obviously). By the way my resistances are 600/700, 7.5 k armor, 30k life and 20% crit chance, so not that impressive.
For my other skills Prismatic armor and either Venom Hydra for stacking pools (as I am still most of the time) or Slow Time Time warp if in groups. I have also recently starting experimenting with different runes for frost nova (either the augmented crit or the extra damage, but even the chain freeze could work).
I'd be interested in knowing what you all think of it, especially fellow meelee mages.
Try before you buy, but maybe arcane twister isn't as useless as we all thought?
