Its called adding that patch, fixing other random things they haven't mentioned, possibly adding back the gems/tomes/otherrandomstuff AH. There are all sorts of things that go into it then just randomly put it down for 8 hours, just take a breather, eat so you don't die, and maybe even see some light outside.
I'm not all too upset about the downtime, as I'm at work and when I get home it'll be over, but why try to tell others how to spend their free time? Besides, as mentioned above, not everyone who plays this game is in the same time zone, and for some people this outage is occurring during the 1-2 hours of the day (like early or late evening) that they might be able to play.
You expect them to make it a shorter time to make it possible for the small percentage of people to play for a couple hours which might make the patching not complete and even more buggy.
People bash blizzard for them bringing it down for a scheduled maintenance and give you a specific time of when it should be up, but you never say anything positive about them when they bring it up earlier than expected.
People in the EU have to deal with a company in the US taking it down during the US work time so they can apply the patch. They should be no reason that Blizzard should bring it down when its early AM for EU and change their work schedule for it.
It takes them 8 hours, sometimes even more, to deploy a patch that's been tested for months by millions of people on PTR's. Just get use to it.

Basically just dropping a trap on top of yourself while waiting for Rakanoth to become attackable and precast a couple elemental arrows. Cast Mark of the Death asap and then just Smoke Screen the flying Discs. I use my Rain of Vengeance with the stun glyph after the second time he does the flying Discs and then smoke screen as soon as the adds come out if he is not dead by then.
